    Hey Josef and everyone. Pasting here a piece I wrote. It was a two part with a picture if oshun looking in her mirror. The first part is about how a mirror reflects the truth. You can't change the reflection it show what is there and you have to deal with it so it is about reflecting the truth. Below is the second part.:
    I did not at first intend to post the image of Oshun I was simply looking for a black woman looking in a mirror before I remembered that Osun is often depicted looking in a mirror. As a small child this is something I would do for hours on end.
    In recent years, friends more versed in African tradition have all without fail said to me that I would very likely relate to the legends of and being of Osun. I was told recently "Osun needs a mirror". At the time I didn't grasp the full meaning of that.
    Until this very moment I felt that looking in the mirror is purely an instinct of vanity and in my very light knowledge of Osun: as she is a Goddess of beauty, much as Venus or Aphrodite, I had also assumed she does so out of vanity.
    It NOW occurs to me that in the darkest parts of my depression and when I was experiencing the most abuse, I completely ceased looking in mirrors. I avoided reflective surfaces. I did not wish to see myself, the darkness, or the emptiness of my situation showed as much in my eyes as it did in my lack of care for my general appearance.
    What I have learned from the archetype of Osun today is that she is in fact beautiful, and she is in fact proud of it. She relishes her appearance. But think about a person who spends all day looking into their own eyes. I now understand that this goddess is revered for her outward shows of beauty, but that the reason she IS a goddess is that she is self aware.
    Our ancestors in their wisdom understood symbols differently than we do. As much as we attach our perspective to our reflection a mirror is coldly objective. It shows us what is there whether we like it or not. Good. Bad. Ugly.
    I have come to the understanding that Osun does not simply carry a mirror because she is superficial or vain. She is extremely beautiful and she knows this. Osun carries her mirror because she constantly checks *herself*. With all her power she needs a mirror, an objective lens to ensure that she is honest, graceful, and kind with herself, and in seeing this, ensuring that she will effortlessly do the same for others.

    Iboru Iboya Awo. Interesting take on this. I am Olo Oshun Ololodi, and I always associate my Iyalorde with her hand mirror as watching her own back. She's not looking at herself, she knows how she looks. She is watching those behind her to make sure there are no surprises. My opinion Awo! Modupe!

    Hello my brother. I appreciate you feeling responsible to our ancestors in helping us followers understand our connections to Orishas and ourselves. I appreciate this video. Spirit has a funny way of making us informed. I was putting up some offerings and nickknacks for
    Oshun. I placed a mirror and looked in it. I’ve always had many mirrors in all of my apartments. No sooner than when u said “Oshun looked at the mirror as a way to see herself”.... wow I felt I was talking to myself. The mirrors in all of my homes are the last thing I depart from when I move. And when I look in a mirror I tend to hold a conversation with self about self! Thank you for helping me feel reassured that Santo is immensely necessary to continue growth in my path! Asé hermano 🙏🏾‼️

    Maferefun Baba! I love this! My mother is Oshun and I'm a professional life coach as well. I always share with my clients that everything around us is OUR OWN reflection so we are always looking at ourselves through others and through our experiences, so in order to grow and evolve, we must always be looking at ourselves because as we do the work, our reflection (our world) changes as we change. 💛 PS...my road is Ibu Kole. Do you have a video in mind for that road? Modupe!

    I believe Oshun uses a mirror because she represents the moon... the moon reflects light from the sun... we see the color of the moon as mostly yellow because of our atmosphere filtering the moon's reflected light... but that light from the sun is actually white... to me it looks like Oshun has been confused with Osun(Ozun) the staff of Orunmila because their names sound so much alike but these should be seperated so to better understand Oshun as being different from Osun... Oshun being the moon has a natural effect on any waters of the Earth because of the moon's gravitational pull... the moon causes the tide to rise and fall... causes menstrual cycles to happen every 28 or so days because that's the rotational cycle of the moon to Earth... the moon and Oshun are both beautiful and are related to magic... now go back to the stories of Oshun and better understand what they are referring to as the stories unfold... it may also help to understand that Shango represents the sun and that Obatala represents the Earth... now the stories make sense as to what's happening in them... and the symbols on ancient artifacts like pottery start making sense... and you can see things such as why the peacock with it's feathers that look like they have eyes on them are linked to Oshun because the moon has many potholes on it like the eyes on peacock feathers... It is critical that these stories be told because they are one of the only ways that we have to validate that some of the ancient Yoruba people understood how nature worked... and because they didn't have a written language back then they relied on oral verbal spoken stories to transmit this information through time and generations of people... This is why I am so grateful to the Babalawos for being the keepers of these stories and traditions... They deserve the utmost respect from us all.

    • @JosephBabaIfa
      @JosephBabaIfa  4 роки тому +9

      Dominican Nubian Warrior Oshun was first initiated into her own priesthood, and fulfilled her own celestial debt like the other orishas. To be able to explain how is a conversation for the initiated in private. Recall that each odu can represent multiple lifetimes within the same deity. For example it could speak of primordial Oshun, when she first arrived on earth, or another incarnation where the Oshun cult already existed and she had to get initiated again to continue elevating. To delve deeper into Ifa one must relinquish the western idea of beginning and end, Ifa is a continuum of itself. I hope I was able to clarify this for you! so when someone says egun, egungun they usually talk about the spirts and ancestors. in every major ceremony you’ll always want to invoke egun cuz egun( ancestral worship) was the first type of worship. they always come first. they only orisha that i can think of that has egun in their name is egun orun. the captain of the egun, he represents the religious leaders founders of the religion. so i’m a sense egun is very much important no matter what stage you are in the religion because everyone has ancestors and spirts
