As a hospice social worker I also feel the same fatigue ... it’s a difficult job we both do dealing with dying and death

Jason (Dr. Troyer) here: Thanks so much Lauren for sharing your story and for sharing the information. Your bravery and honesty throughout your blog and UA-cam Channel were key reasons why I wanted to include you in the Finding Resilience program and materials. I know other funeral professionals will definitely be able to identify with your story: an excitement about being able to serve families at such a critical time, and yet it is easy to get lost in funeral service as you take care of everyone else. I'm glad you were able to stay with funeral service - you're undoubtedly a healing presence for the families you serve. I hope others will check out the FREE Finding Resilience materials. Funeral professionals definitely deserve to focus on themselves for a change.

There is a lot of compassion fatigue in the veterinary field as well, and I have noticed the symptoms in friends and in myself at times. One of the big reasons seems to be how you try to do anything to help a pet, but have pet owners decline treatment because of finances and afterwards blame the veterinarian for not curing their pet. I can imagine that being portrayed as someone who is just in it for the money is something that happens in the funeral industry as well. Do you agree with that? For me it really helps not to work fulltime and to focus on the many amazing pet owners I see every day in the clinic rather than the few negative pet owners.

As a fire fighter and a paramedic, now a social worker, I fully understand the idea of compassion fatigue. I work a great deal to fight through this with myself and others. More importantly, I work hard to dispel the stigma and misconceptions of of mental illness. I applaud your courage to put yourself and your background out there. You hit the nail on the head. Good self-care is the key to good overall health, both physical and emotional. Let me assure you that I can appreciate what you have gone through, having been in similar positions myself. There is no doubt that you are a good person, compassionate and empathetic. Keep up the good work.

This is a great video! I had never heard of Compassion Fatigue Syndrome before watching your video, but after hearing you describe it and your personal experience...I believe that I too suffered through it. The most interesting thing in my case is that my job was not in any way involved with the Medical or Death Care professions...however, it did involve working people on very serious matters that essentially nobody else could know about them other than immediate family. It eventually got to be too much and I didn't know how to handle it, so I had to quit. Because this is a public forum, and the Internet being what it is, I don't want to tell the world what I did...but I guarantee you would probably never guess. Your video was not rambling at all...great work...looking forward to your next one!! :)

@@LittleMissFuneral I just watched your video on concussion fatigue syndrome and believe you me I can totally relate to that. I'm currently in funeral services in Toronto as a. Crematorium Operator for 34 years. So I can definitely relate this video. I'm so tired and wasn't sure what I been going through but now I think I understand.

for many years of working at the hospital and working with people always dying It got to me so much and then when I did hospice with my mom who had many TIAS and her needing 24-7 care. I found myself getting depressed , so a social worker told me I needed time for myself and I found a couple of days to take off and rest during her sickness. See I was just getting over the death of my brother and then she got sick and went down hill very quickly after he passed. My mom lived with us 8 months and then she had a stroke and died 7 days later. Then I was worried about my dad who was 82 and he did well after she passed and then it was his turn 10yrs later with COPD and CHF he had 27 runs to the hospital and so after his last visit to the hospital I took him in for hospice care but he was a different patient then my mom, but he had a very pretty nurse who took great care of him and she gave me time to rest.

Thank you so much for sharing this especially when it is hard for you to verbalize your experiences. I have not yet entered the business but when I (hopefully) do I will remember this for myself and others. Keep working on taking care of yourself, you deserve it!

gary sansone thank you! This job can be very stressful because we’re on a specific schedule, and you’re correct, family dynamics can play a huge role. We just do what we do and try to help others and take care of ourselves along the way :)

😞I'm dating a body removal guy ..I believe he is suffering from this. I'm newly in this situationship with him. I can already tell being with someone in this profession there is no stability in anything😩😭😭 the hours of him working is horrific. But I chose to give this a try. I'm an emotional type of woman.. but yet strong minded. Listening to his stories every day is intriguing and make my stomach hurt at the same time. Every feeling he felt is like I felt the darkness 10 times worst. The sleeping.. the insomnia..OMG.. but his adrenaline and stamina and mindset and compassion for what he does is what makes me love him even more. I can tell in his eyes.. and in his demeanor that he is tired. I don't know what I'm getting myself into but yall please pray for me.
