  • We experience relaxing hygge day walking through Ribe and visiting the Christmas market. It was nice and relaxing and super cool to walk around the oldest city in Denmark. We can't wait to go back in the summer when things are even more active!

    Nice that you finally visit Ribe. It is such a historic city. Allso in the Summer time you should visit Rømø and spend some time on the insane beach there and see the Island. You should have stopped by Rødding only 20 km east of Ribe and see the world's first Højskole and the 900 year old church. Thank you for doing these videos they really show the parts of Denmark we all love.

    Fun fact about most older places in Denmark. Since we had a few wars with Sweden, most of the places that were built for defensive use were burned to some extent. So that means that the infrastructure is very diverse in terms of when they were built back, so there is almost always a part of town that is from before the wars and after.

    We actually have records of Ribe dating back to 703. The city is older than Hambourg & Bremen, and was founded before Charlesmanges conquest of Saxony.
    Ribe is the oldest known city in continental nothern europe. Coins where minted in Ribe in the 730's.

    In regards to that little British pathe sketch and its storks its actually rather sad. In the past Storks were an incredibly common bird in Denmark, being seen in all corners and being a common side on chimneytops. Even as recently as the 1960's when the Pathe films were filmed there were still a decently sized population left. But the drainage of swampland for farming and rapid development of suburbs around cities meant their habitat almost entirely disappeared and today the Storks are an incredibly endangered species in the country, despite once being so iconic and common. Some efforts to make storks return have come with modest success but its still moving at a very slow pace, and as recent national news about a Danish stork dying while on winter migration to Uganda shows, there is a big focus on the birds and trying to make sure there is a stork population for the future.
    There should also be some nature projects coming soon that should help a ton. The new Søborg Sø in Nordsjælland in particular being a good example. That one was drained in the 1800's to make farmland which is now infertile. A shallow swampy lake like that when returned to that state should be prime territory for storks.

    Love seein' you guys enjoying all the christmas events and markets in Denmark :)
    If you want an idea for something different, I would suggest taking a trip to Malaga in Spain around christmas. We do this every year (except for 2020, for obvious reasons). It's a wonderful city, lots of history, good food and a lot of festive christmas traditions. And also - they spend the most on christmas decorations and lights of any city in the EU - I think it is.
    We just returned from there today - and I will wholeheartedly recommend it. It's cheap to go and rent and apartment around Xmas - because it's not that touristy. You will not get Wham'd - but you will get Mariah Carey'd.. A lot.

      Think you mean Bornholm.

    • @MsBlackdeath13
      @MsBlackdeath13 2 роки тому +1

      Bornholm is a little island beneath Sweden and to the east of Denmark.
      Swedish forces conquered the island in 1645, but returned the island to Denmark in the following peace settlement. After the war in 1658, Denmark ceded the island to Sweden under the Treaty of Roskilde along with the rest of the Skåneland, Bohuslän and Trøndelag, and it was occupied by Swedish forces. A revolt broke out the same year, culminating in Villum Clausen's shooting of the Swedish commander Johan Printzensköld on 8 December 1658. Following the revolt, a deputation of islanders presented the island as a gift to King Frederick III on the condition that the island would never be ceded again. This status was confirmed in the Treaty of Copenhagen in 1660.
      During WW2 it was captured (along with Denmark) by Germany on 10 April 1940, and served as a lookout post and listening station during the war, as it was a part of the Eastern Front.
      Later it was heavily bombarded by the Soviet Air Force in May 1945. Soviet forces left the island on 5 April 1946, though the rest of Denmark had been liberated on the 5th of May that same year.
