Fantastic recommendations, thank you! Sometimes i'm in the mood for something bleak and all those books sounds exactly like what i'd like, especially the first two.
Thank you! I hope you 'enjoy' them if you get chance to read them!
@@TheBookubus I hope i'll enjoy them! "Enjoy" may not be the right word but you see what i mean lol. Thanks for the answer!
Thank you for the recommendations. I haven't read any of these books yet, but will definitely try and track some down for 2023.
I hope you enjoy them if you give them a read! Thank you!
Ooh I don’t think I realized The Auctioneer was so bleak! Definitely need to get to that one soon. I loved The Vegetarian!
It is! Hope you like it. The Vegetarian is such an excellent book.
After reading The Girl Next Door, I'm in no rush to read Let's Go Play at the Adams' but I really want to read it eventually lol. Thanks for the shout-out!
That is totally understandable! It's definitely quite different in style so I do recommend it...when you're in the right frame of mind to pick it up. And of course! Thanks again for bringing Notice to my attention.
Totally agree on the Vegetarian!
Such an excellent book!
I was waiting for the appearances of the Lewis book and the Welsh book. There is no way they couldn't be on the bleak books list. For me the bleakest book I've ever read was Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. Sometimes it is all about when you read something.
They were definitely going to be on the list! I've never even read any Dr. Seuss but it sounds like he had some shit going on lol.
Good morning Alex, thank you for sharing your thoughts on books, I always enjoy watching!!! ❤️❤️Judy❤️❤️
Hi Judy! Thank you for watching :)
I really want to read Joan Samson's The Auctioneer. Ah, the infamous Notice...i'm both intrigued and unsure about that one! I think it's published by Serpent's Tail, isn't it? They've published a number of interesting, dark, messed up etc books! Ah, Marabou Stork Nightmares, how I love that book....now, what's that quote? "computers, aye, they're the wave of the future" 🙂. Have you read Filth by Mr Welsh? I loved that one too. More bleakness for you : John Williams - Stoner; Richard Yates - Revolutionary Road; Ian McEwan - The Cement Garden ...
I hope you like them if you give them a read! Yes, I think that's the publisher of the copy of Notice I have. I'll have to check out their other publications! So glad you loved Marabou Stork Nightmares too. I have read Filth and thought it was great as well. Thank you for the book recommendations!
The Auctioneer is one of my all time favourite horror books...it is so good but so so bleak haha.
Wow Notice sounds like A LOT.
All of these are great recs.
So glad you liked The Auctioneer too. It's one that really stuck with me.
Yeah Notice is definitely A LOT :/
Thank you, Andrew!
I haven't read any of these, but I've heard of some of them like Let's Go Play at the Adams' and The Vegetarian.
I hope you enjoy them if you give any of them a try!
I've read The Vegetarian by Han Kang. It was definitely an unique reading experience. I want to buy the first two books that you've mentioned since they are both part of the Paperbacks From Hell line of Valancourt books. I will put the rest of the books that you've mentioned on my list. Fortunate Son by Walter Mosley has some bleak and despairing moments.
Hope you enjoy the Valancourt ones. I have not read Fortunate Son so thank you for the recommendation!
I've been meaning to read The Vegetarian!
I highly recommend it! It's a really interesting one, I think you would like it.
Auctioneer definitely deserves the description of bleak....so much dread!
Definitely high on the dread scale!
Great list, Alex! I think one of the bleakest books I've read is Harriet by Elizabeth Jenkins, based on true events in Victorian-era England. Have you read it?
Thanks! I have not read Harriet but clearly I need to so thank you for the recommendation!
From this list I’ve only read “The Auctioneer” this year and it is one of my fav of 2022. I agree that book was pretty damn bleak. All the others I really want to get my hands on. I am really loving this bleak week series. I’ve already watched one of the bleak films you recommended-“the witch who came from the sea”. That was good but in a very depressing way.
The Auctioneer is such a great book. Bleak but so good! Witch is definitely depressing, I agree. I really felt for the character and they portrayed her trauma and mental health in such an interesting way. Thank you so much, I'm glad you've been enjoying this series!
@@TheBookubus yes that movie especially worked because it was made in the 70’s. I don’t think it would have worked the way it did if made in another era.
Another great video
Thank you!
Irvine Welsh is great.
He is!
