Of Arguments and Truth

  • Often we argue because our personal view points are challenged and we want to be 'right' and we want others to see the 'truth'. Arguments, however, do not always lead to truth and often there is no absolute truth. It is also acceptable to be wrong from time to time.
According to Ajahn Brahm, we should not argue for the sake of truth, instead we should FEEL truth. Feelings such as contentment, peace, freedom, stillness and joy transcend time, culture and arguments themselves.

It never ceases to amaze me how AB can be so jovial. He always laughs at the end of his jokes. Not a tired laugh either. He really gets into it. I wish I can be like that. 😨

The trouble is that at times we do not known that we are wrong or half correct, as Ajahn says no one is listening to others except to oneself. The skills to manage differences in opinions needed to be cultivated so that peace & harmony can be maintained & sustained always.

Thank you, Ajhan Brahm, for reminding me to be at peace and patient when my husband goes into tirades he cannot help (illness-related). You are teaching me to remove the sting from my side and from his, when I smile and say, "It's just water under the bridge" when he becomes sad and apologetic. I hate to see him hurt or sad.

I was really upset with my Sis for always imposing her judgement on me. She is always analyzing me as if I am full of faults. I was fed up and wanted to pick up an argument with her but this talk has calmed me down. I have decided the best is shut up.

Just beyond the arguing there is a long table of companionship set and waiting for us to sit down.

I like the general attitude that AB explains in this and think it's important to think of people's feelings and to try to get along, but at the same time sometimes one can believe strongly sometimes that one's view of something is right and valid, and worth defending. Like, I was watching Richard Dawkins talking to a creationist just now, who thinks children in American schools should be taught to doubt evolution, and Richard was saying look at the fossil record, we have facts that prove it.

this video was so incredibly helpful, I found it at a time in my life when I was arguing daily with my partner, we watched it together and it made a huge difference. So simple yet profound. I love Ajahn's delivery, his sense of humour and story telling are awesome! Thank you so much!

I like the idea of fighting for "wrong rights"! As well as shutting up if I'm (ever) right. lol

.... I mean to say that not all people's "truths" are always equally valid, and sometimes it's worth sticking to your guns; but by all means do it politely and avoiding hate and anger.

Where does AB get his material for his talks. He’s not reading from anything. He just talks and talks and talks. Incredible Mind!

@WEERASHAN? By your logic Copernicus should have shut up and so should have Galileo and Newton? They were right, and there is no if and buts about it, until you present evidence of contrary. This guy is not talking about "arguments" he's talking about "QUARRELS"
