As an artist from Kenya, this mentality that people from "third world" countries are just eager to gobble up trashy rates from american or otherwise employers is stupid. Just like they don't want to pay you they definitely don't want to pay us what we are worth and expect even higher quality from us which is ridiculous. We just accept it sometimes because there is literally no other choice not that we are somehow more accepting of exploitation. I have been an artist since I was 10 going 30 now and it is offensive to me that someone will categorise all my work and experience as somehow deserving of less respect just because of the country I was born in.

Well the thing is , West has always been at the forefront of Creation . Unfortunately the third world countries are so poor that they dnt have time or resources to invest in the creation of novel ideas. This is why most of them end up being the copycats . Ever wonder why third world countries dnt ever catch up to these Economic giants ? . Well it's becoz of that.
A country must exercise innovation and innovation is not possible without having a vigorous institutions of Research and Development.
The same is true for any profession.
You will be paid more if you stand distinct but this gets harder becoz of currency as well . Since you dnt live in the west , you will always be paid less becoz of the devalued currency of your country. Coz currency exchange also plays the role .
The solution is commodity money not the hegemony of American man printing the dollar at whims and defining the creation of value universally . This is why it will always remain the same , unless it changes.the value extraction is real .
You literally just described being more accepting of lower rates as you have no other choice. You can go for lower while still making a good living. Has nothing to do with what you deserve

Remember that for any service you are willing to offer online, there will always be someone from a poor country that will offer the same quality for 1/10 of your price.
And that's just sad if you think about it. They're really hurting the value of our work as creatives.
But there are trade off so its the same price

Good for them, it will make their countries richer and eventually they will have to raise the prices.
There's not a part of the planet which is entitled to wellbeing, you know?

Gli unici artisti che vedo prosperare sono quelli che parlano del proprio lavoro e ci costruiscono una mitologia e una storia dietro. Il lavoro di per sé, per quanto bello, ormai passa in secondo piano nell'oceano di contenuti, e va valorizzato in modi laterali.

It wasn't that no one knew what a freelancer was a decade ago, it's that companies have realized they get an out on treating employees like garbage and compensating, or crediting them in the case of the games industry, fairly if that worker is classified under law as an independent contractor. Companies want the freedom to cut a job for a few months to save a few bucks, and they're willing to sacrifice flexibility and continuity for it. It's not people wanting to be freelance, it's people having to be freelance because companies want to run as lean as possible to maximize profits, even if that process ultimately hurts the industry and the things they make. They couldn't care less what's going out the door, or what's going on in the building, as long as it doesn't hurt their current or future potential for infinite growth. The reason people weren't freelance before is because it's inherently precarious. The reason they are now is because the companies know they can bully their workers around without consequence.
It sounds like there is a somewhat mutually exclusive relationship between the term "freelancer" and "expert" in your narration. I agree that the market of "freelancers" with very limited skills is oversaturated - but not for a lack of demand in general but for a lack of skill to supply the existing demand. The "skill floor" to succeed in Digital Arts is steadily rising - because tasks below that skill floor are delegated to lower wages countries and in time to AI. So yes, while freelancers below that skill floor will have an even harder time in the future, the freelancers who are above the skill floor - experts or aspiring experts - don't seem to struggle too much. Simply because employers / people commissioning work often have a very specific core idea that they want to see realised in a way they want. They don't just want "something", they want what they imagine. And while you could probably fine tune prompt after prompt after prompt until an AI spits something out that's "good enough" chances are you'll be way more satisfied and will be way more involved in the process if you get a human to work with.

As a 3D animation student your comment is really welcome, sometime I struggle when thinking about futur in this domain because of uncertain offers or good income afterward. Then knowing that improve skill at high level can still be effective to have work and great pay is really good for moral and motivation !

You couldn't have said it better. I think we all have this in the back of our mind today. Especially with AI setting the next bar of art that was made by someone with no skill level.

What's gonna happen is all the artists that didn't learn the craft and just used templates and tutorials will be replaced by ai first. I've been in the industry 25 years, I design and code, and ai cannot replace me yet. I'm going to add ai to my arsenal to keep from being replaced. Nothing beats hard work, dedication, and knowledge.
Finally, someone who doesn't whine about changes in their industry. Thank you for existing.

@@Soldadodelasombra yea that's why I said hard work, dedication, and knowledge. Before I got my bachelor's degree I worked in the lawn service two years. That shit was brutal. I busted my ass starting work at 7am finishing at 3-5pm depending how quick we worked. I naturally have a fast metabolism and I lost 25pds in two years. Ppl thought I was dying of cancer or on a bunch of drugs. Neither was true. I made 350/week. Now I make a lot more and don't have to work nearly as hard but I always stay curious and keep learning and implementing new strategies. Since I went to college I started with the basics and worked my way up. It was a lot of hard work at first. Now I'm benefiting from it.

Yea man I remember when Photoshop started making masking a lot easier and faster, changing skies, using content aware fill and scale, I thought man this is gonna make everyone be able to do what I do. So I started using it and guess what I learned... It made me a lot faster and I can concentrate in other areas and improve my design projects. Haven't looked back since. I appreciate all the new technologies coming out and their improvements.

It's 10 x harder to do freelance. Being employed in a studio is a lot easier for me and most of the time more advantageous. But of course, the exception to that rule is if you're an established independent artist with a huge fanbase.
One thing that's going to be a huge separation is companies that demand in-person work or layered files that AI can't create. That won't be for a while, but when it happens a LOT of Ai artists are done for.
Unfortunately this is nothing new. It happens in all burgeoning industries. In the early days of the Internet there was a severe shortage of web designers and they could earn huge money - then, of course, everyone jumped on the bandwagon and the market was flooded. A major issue coming - or maybe already here - is the advent of AI created art. If you look at Artstation, or similar websites, there are literally thousands of professional quality artists. Pile AI generated art on top of those and it will be impossible for potential employers to find your work. My friend in America is an acting teacher. He told me that only 1% of 1% actually make it 'Big'. I can see the same thing happening in the visual entertainment market.
"Unfortunately" for some, "Fortunatley" for others, who are entitled exactly as much.
People say ai will not replace the artists but it has already started replacing us 😂, now see there is less freelance work youtubers can now generate there thumbnails with ai also in nfts only ai art is selling now. Wake up guys raise your voice against ai because it will not effect big established Artists but small artists like us 🙂
AI is going nowhere. Even if they get sued, they've made plenty of money to cover whatever cost comes their way and someone else will come to replace them
@@cowl6867 it hurts bro 💔🥺😔 we real artists worked on our art for years to learn a medium and a specific artstyle but now these guys create our same exact artstyle just by typing words, i am scared that what will be ai after a year or 2 💔😔

I've already testing those misconception in last 6 months. My 3D and manual editing still outperformed my AI services by far . Heck even the AI ones not yet have one order.
I do believe clients not as stupid as most anti AI people thinking. They will opt to choose the right service provider. Now it's up to us how we keep to push our limitations
what's the purpose of nft AI art tho? the nft was made to shows originality and ownership, but AI? everyone have it and can make it by themselves, so nft ai is a big joke

i've been freelancing since 2012, and yes its very comptetive, i was lucky enough to get in early and build a substantial portfolio before the freelance boom and now i dont have to look for clients they come to me
I started relatively late and and my clients also came to me. It is all about finding a good niche or building a personal brand with something like a UA-cam channel

This doesn't just apply to freelancing. Everyone wants to work at an easy job and earn big money. Nobody wants to work in a factory or as a builder or as a maintenance worker. Everyone wants to be worthy and because of this there is a glut of the market. To master a profession, you do not need higher education, spend a lot of money, only the Internet and UA-cam.

@@lavatr8322 I doubt it's that serious. You just learn AI and use it to make 3D content. It isn't a full replacement.
There are many freelancers, but there are very few freelancers who are actually good. Talk to most clients and they'll tell you the quality of freelancers on these sites is pretty bad. So if you're really good and know how to market yourself, you'll have minimum resistance breaking through.
And you have Jay-Z, Tom Brady etc. There will always be room for a few, a very few at the top, but if you're in the west it's a race to the bottom. If AI doesn't get you, competition from millions...millions of starving people in 3rd world - like countries willing to work for peanuts ...will get you. Stop playing the old lottery game the baby-boomers have been preaching for the last 50 years!
The problem of freelance and inhouse worker price issues is that there are so many trade off : timezone, communication, culture, trustworthy and legal issue , then yeah cheaper price mean bigger trade off so nothing really "cheaper" here if you think about it ,it is the same price you pay, so your skill is what really matter

People need to stop making art that isn't theirs and using/ sticking to a style that is easily replicated. The artists who make a living make and sell their own unique style in multiple mediums. People want what they make, not what anyone can. AI or not, you'll be replaced either way, it's just how the competitive market works
Yeah i hate to see “artworks” that look so alike, but they are not from the same people and they are actually making money, i think that’s horrible, there’s no originality, no creativity, people look like machines replicating what their dumb minds like, what’s popular, only a few artists are really great to see, and they are not that recognised

Interesting video! I can't avoid to think that maybe part of this saturation market has to be with the hundreds of websites that offers free content. I mean.. why to pay an artis for an assets if you can download for free. Just an opinion!
This is pretty sad as in my country (PR) is almost impossible to live. Things here are 2-3 times more expensive than in US, and we have some of the highest taxes in the continent... so trying to work as a freelancer with all this competition seems not viable
What we can only do is just keep studying and getting better to develop our own projects in the future and just forget about freelancing 😔

Hearing sentences like "Oh, I'm from a rich country and this job doesn't pay enough" is disturbing.
You're not entitled to a job, as people from poor countries are not entitled to the comforts of rich countries.
Imagine a worker from a poor country saying "oh, they got swimming pools there, I also want one!"
Sorry, you get what your country has to offer, in good and bad, and if you don't like it either you move or sad day for you.
@ChristianIce I understand your point... but what about people who are disabled? have family? Or just don't have money? It's not so easy to leave a country, cuz if it was, everyone would do it.
I've been working since I was 6, while most kids here didn't need to, but after an accident, I couldn't keep working and now I'm stuck home. Freelance or Online jobs is my only way to progress, and for many others too.
There's so many things to have in mind if u wanna move to another country: Health, money, family, friends, house, transport, law, language, culture, lifestyle, etc... Only the rich can.
This affects even more people in third-world countries, where they can't just leave if they want to, cuz the government wouldn't allow it, unless they're rich of course.
If u live in a good country, good for u, be thankful to God... but not everyone has enough resources to just "move". So your comment is more like a mock than an advice to people in bad situations. Everyone has thought about moving at some point, but it's hard or almost impossible for the majority.

Most artists get offers from local businesses. You can't really demand first world rates from third world small businesses as well.

I think the concept of a freelancer is changing dramatically , plenty of things "a freelancer can make" you just can grab it from the blendermarket and with adding some spicy, you can create something to sell ...it is the reality of today...the final product is the judge !
at this point i would suggest all freelancers to gather into an independent studio which is online based. ofc to fight against AI arts being flooded to the internet as well

No the problem with the freelance market is it's going to be entirely replaced by AI. That's the problem. Spent my whole life learning how to draw and paint in a specific anime style, only for the last 2 years for it be completely automated away. Obviously I just switched to making 3D art, but no doubt this will be automated by AI in the near future as well.

did photoshop put any artists out of business?, did blender maya or Rhino put any 3d artists and architects out of business? AI will only be a threat when it becomes sentient, which is a long long way off, AI such as mid journey is simply another tool to be used for creativity, its not the AI that will put people out of business its the people who figure out how to properly implement them that will.
I'm not worried about AI personally. I've had very few freelance or inhouse jobs where I was let loose with the brief and had no alterations requested. The back and forth between artist and client can be um.. 'quite robust'. Some of the alteration requests are complicated or very detailed. Someone using AI will have a hard time addressed client feedback via typing in prompt words. It would be like using photoshop with those heavy duty gloves that are attached to triple-glazed windows in nuclear research facilities.

@@AnthonyRosbottom Give it 5 years and you'll be able to specify in exact detail what kind of art you want to generate, from entire character concepts with specific clothing, objects or outfits. We are only at the very early stages of this stuff..That's why i'm looking for any field that isn't clearly heading in that direction. Unfortunately for me specifically, the style of art I practiced was the first to be completely automated.
And I also want to add that people from third world countries have much more motivation to succeed in life and therefore they replace people from first world countries. It's not about the salary here. The stakes are higher here. Or you will change your life or live a disgusting and depressing life. They want to change their lives more than anyone and put in a lot more effort. Look at some of the most famous artists, such as Vitaly Bulgarov, who made his way from a poor country in Eastern Europe, or Jama Jurabaev, who generally grew up in a village in Tajikistan, where the average monthly salary is $100.
I’m 17 from 3rd world and really want to succeed but i’m being crippled by anxiety and depression and the complete lack of emotional support from anyone around me, i need to overcome this alone immediately so i can go to another country when i’m 18 and realise my dreams

Finally, you young people are waking up. You are about to live through the most excruciating moments in first world, modern life. The work singularity is going to come much quicker than the great singularity. The average life for an average media creator, such as most of you are, is over. Until the robots come, find something with lots of the required dexterity and multitasking…. other than that ..this type of life, as a so-called artist , is over , as far as the future is concerned, and especially going to school for it. As far as me as a conventional Artist, getting by doing Uber, they just approved driverless level five driving in California. It is going to make my head spin and others how quickly it is going to spread in cities. I am just biding my time and enjoying it while I can.

Pareto principal boys, the top 5% in any industry get all the jobs and money, and the other 95% fight for the scraps.

There are a lot of people that think if they can model a simple chair they consider themselves great artists, what is wrong. Most of the time such, so called artists produce sh....t. And the market is overwhelmed with such ''professionals''. They put low prices for their work and at the same time dump the price market down. I would suggest them to go to work to a fabric or to a supermarket.
I can feel your frustration my friend. Such "professionals" are devaluing the work and making it challenging for those who really know the craft to find a lucrative gig.
But all I can say is up the quality of your work in skills and technicality. Strive to be among the bests, among the masters in the craft and work will find you.
When one is starting out the competition is many, but when you strive to be among the best in the craft, the competition will shrink and the people you'll be competing with will no longer be your competitors but your colleagues.
In old day those modeller called as Drafter. They work as assistant or helper for real artist who need 3d items to fill blank spot from their painting or high concept art

it's not that there are Finite Jobs, you need to think of the Market as a Beach, and you're going Crabbing... did you bring a Bucket? or did you just Assume everyone already has a Huge Bucket FILLED with Crabs, and there are no more Crabs? cause there are always more Crabs, its how hard are you going to look for them?

Well even we were alive at that time, nothing crazy would happen to us. Such a collision even takes millions of years to fully complete and the likelihood of stars colliding is close to none because of how vast space is.
What is this first world and third world countries? I thought they don't call that anymore because every nation is growing well ahead with education, skills and talent more than " first world" country.
Learn marketing and direct buyers to your work. Bypass the "middleman".
Low wages are also responsible , people dnt want to work in a company and be made to work for 1000 hours a month . The flexibility of freelance makes that enticing.

Some of you seem scared. Why even start art in the first place if your gonna let anything stop you? Sounds like you didn't really care all that much.
Doesn’t everybody care and wonder they’re gonna make a living doing something? That’s why people take educations in the first place.
Get a job to pay your bills and and freelance on the side. Take low paying jobs for a short while. Develop your skills to a high level and you will get high paying clients. Eventually freelancing will overtake you day job. Simple right? Wrong, the answer is work and know your value.
I sold 2 AI made designs and I think AI should not be used as a final product it is good for concept. AI arts are so good that clients dont recognise as ai and it is killing artists

I will say depend how much client wanna pay . If they're willing to spend more so that's no problem for me to even giving them the 3D model versions of the illustrations or scrnes. But if they only willing to pay for a peanut so a peanut they will get from me. That's fine

@@lavatr8322 Construction is a capital heavy industry, same with driving trucks. You aren't going to automate a 80,000 lb truck going down the highway even if you do have the highest level of autonomy software, because for insurance reasons a driver will still be present. It is the same reason why pilots are not being replaced in the cockpit of aircraft, even though the Lockheed Tristar jet from 1970 could land without intervention from the pilot. They will still be required for insurance. Anything required for creating content is doable because it's all pattern recognition and that is why all white collar work is at risk of being automated first, but at the same time, those same white collar workers don't want their jobs replaced so they will find a way to protect it like most of the upper class strata try to protect their status.

isn't the real problem with 'freelancers' blender, people who think that blender is somehow now the industry standard are in for a massive shock when they find out it isn't, add to that youtubers who constantly try and sell blender as the tool everyone needs to learn because its going to be the next industry leader, your channel included, blender is a jack of all trades, when you consider that blender is not interested in producing a 3D program that gives the user an industry standard layout instead it makes the user jump through an unnecessary amount of steps to reach the same goal, volumetric lighting so that you have light beams is not as simple as setting a light to volumetric and you have the light beam, instead you have to add a box then add to that a node that does volumetric scattering increasing the complexity of the scene, blender has always 'done things the blender way' for the sake of doing things 'the blender way' the idiot move to make selection a right click instead of the industry standard left click is why blender will be a long time becoming the industry standard, you tube channels need to stop this insanity that blender is somehow the software to learn and recognise that it has a long way to go and a lot to fix, the ridiculous convert curves to meshes before you can work with them as objects, i don't know any other program that you have to do this with, even form z a program from a long time back allowed you to work directly with curves and not have to convert them first, having to reset the scale everytime you alter an object x y or z size is beyond ridiculous, so maybe youtubers and those who thing that they are somehow skilled in blender might want to be a little more truthful when it comes to making people think their skill sets are industry standard because they managed to create a doughnut in a program that has a long way to go before its used in place of houdini, maya, 3ds max or cinema 4D.

@@lavatr8322 ive worked in games, still, forever since and on system shock 1. maya and max suck they havent changed in forever. blender by redoing its interface in 2.8 changed everything. there are things you can do in blender the other ones need to now catch up to.
If you want to talk business Blender is almost always a better choice for low level freelance artists. The cost of the others increases the barrier to entry. It isn't worth working for peanuts because you're paying up the ass for your tools. Also Blender is already a commonly used program for concepting. Go cry somewhere else.
