I saw the first public performance of this (the day after the press one) and it was amazing. Love Lee Mead but I thought the Narrator was particularly fantastic and I’ve never been able to find a recording with her. She actually missed the first line in “Jacob and sons” (I know the score backwards so I noticed but I doubt anyone else did as she carried on like the pro she is!). Thank you for sharing this.
Lee definitely deserved to win the competition that got him this role, we went to see him as I recall in 2007 (Big Joseph fan ever since school took us to it at the Crucible about 40 years ago)
This version was the one that more than charm, since I was a child I was always a fan of the musical especially the version of Lee Mead, I will never fulfill the dream of having seen this scene in person
So happy to see this, thanks for sharing, just wish I found it sooner! I love Lee Mead and am in the states so it was great to see the London production 😊
1:45:39 - 1:46:38 OMG the nostalgia❤️Saw this revival with Lee Mead in the summer of 2007, saw the 2019 revival and due to go again in this July for my 21st. JUST PHENOMENAL, kind of wished they used this effect in the 2019 revival but then we have to move onwards with these things ❤️ Lee Mead and Jac Yarrow are such incredible Josephs each make it their own.. favourite musical of all time
Stephen Tate, who is Jacob in this, created two more iconic ALW roles in the West End. He was the original Judas in JCS, and then Gus/Growltiger in the original production of Cats. HE also created the role of Clyde in Witches of Eastwick. Such a massive talent. (He also directed the original West-End production of MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD)
Thank you for uploading this! I’ve been looking for this version for forever. I saw it in London in 2008 and thought the children’s voices during the song with the colors were incredible!
I love this video, I was in a smaller version of it at may church when I was a little kid and I wanted to see the fuller version of it. I can tell that I'll be watching this more than a few times.
saw this many a time at the palladium and hammersmith apollo with linzi hateley and philip schofield....they were incredible then and this show is basically the same mar a few tweaks...its just a brilliant feelgood ensemble cast production. bless all involved ..bravo x
Lol 😂 I love it at 40:20 when the butler is singing and then when he says “I picked some grapes and a crushed them to wine”, he goes high pitched on Crushed and I laughed so hard xx 😘
It's interesting how different this is to the touring production. I was one of the kids in the show in 2005 and 2008, and the choreography, costumes and even parts of the music are completely different.
I'm currently in my high schools production of Joseph! Although I'm in Ensemble, I absolutely love being apart of the cast. So nostalgic watching this. Aw lee competing and winning and also because I was in Joseph when I was younger as a narrator. Would love to do it again- I can still remember all the words.
I play Levi (not Pharaoh though, Dan plays it in our production) and I understudy Zebulun and Benjamin. It’s so much fun😄😄 I never leave stage and when I do it’s just for costume and scene changes. The music is so catchy.
So much better than that anemic 2019 revival that seems to be the version of choice in the 2020s. This 1991/2007 version is fun and bright, great staging, and the kids choir perfectly binds the show to its origins.
There seem to be lines missed out of the songs such as 1.in those canon day they missed the line- eh maintenant we drink a bitter wine 2. in Benjamin calypso what happened to the line- oh yes it’s true Benjamin is straighter than the big bamboo Also weirded they had the prison song again before the mega mix and he never put the coat back on. Yes I know this was over a decade ago. It’s just weird.
So...i have a theory about the Narrator. I think she's Rachel. Joseph's mum who died when Benjamin was born. (Yes i get that she's "just a teacher" or whatever but just hear me out) The way she looks at ...all the guys at times but ESPECIALLY Joseph and Benjamin is...hilariously mumsy at times and literally every character wants her to be on their side. (Except maybe the Potiphors. They're just...no) also look at her face when she realises what Joseph is about to do to his little brother...lady is NOT happy
Why is there the london eye or a ferris wheel whatever it is there when he arrives joseph arrives in egypt? What has that got to do with ancient egypt or joseph?
