A very interesting and enjoyable episode. You are right about Blessed Marie-Eugène. While we have heard about him, and know of his books, many of us have not actually read them and do not know his background story. Fantastic interview ! Anne-Elisabeth's enthusiasm is infectious. She makes a very interesting observation about the 'hiddenness' of her vocation. Perhaps this is a topic for further discussion at some point. I feel it is an important point, and one which has relevance for Secular Order members also.

I too would like to pursue this life of Carmelite hiddenness topic. While I live it everyday I cannot recall ever discussing it. Thank you.

This is another wonderful episode! I was struck by your observation that many of our Carmelite saints lost a parent as a young child. They experienced deep suffering early in life. This was also my experience, losing my father at 11 years. Our St. John of the Cross reached out to me as a young girl with his presence and consoling words. This sustained me and helped me to draw near to God for healing. And now, I too am part of Carmel since 2007. What a blessing! I think they keep an eye out for children in their suffering!

From my experience , when a person loses a person before average time ; death is a very real reality. It deeply affects that persons development. This i know from personal experience.

That is very true, Jane. It can either make us fall into anger and despair or transform us into saints depending on how we respond with the help of God's grace. I'm sorry for your loss!

Very interesting. I am an 87 year old English OCDS, who asked to enter many Carmels before entering one in Italy, where after a year as a postulant had to leave, and then joined the Secular branch of the Order ascan isolated member, living a single life alone, andvteaching piano, but now retired, and trying always to live the Carmelite spirituality. I am in contact with members of the Order.

My concern is that Therese of Lisieux is a masochist. She loved/embraced suffering. If new vocations today find Therese's autobiography inspiring, might that be because they find in her a model for their own innate masochism?
P.S. All these "titles" -- "of Jesus Crucified" "of Christ the King" -- were, in Theresa of Avila's times, a play on words. The nobility were always "of this place or of that place." The Carmelite reform intended by their religious titles to confer a certain sense of spiritual nobility onto the friars/monks and nuns.
Today we recognize more clearly that religious profession is simply a deepening of the baptismal vows. Retaining the baptismal name is consistent with baptismal vows.

@@ICSPublications Thanks. 9 mths ago I stumbled on your y-tube channel, then month, I moved hermitage to another province and followed His command to give up the wifi & Internet for 6 mths.
It was great, rewarding experience and I use wifi sparingly and I already see, watching y-tube takes time away from gazing at the Lord.

@@ICSPublications I agree, it would be really neat to have an episode about St. Mary of Jesus Crucified!
