Frankly if a kid really wants to learn guitar, a imperfect guitar wont stop them, my first electric had an action that was a mile high and I restrung it with 12s because I dident know what string gauge to buy when the stock ones broke. and I played it 4 hours a day. So this is great for that
Andre Krumins Holy shit, you must of ripped after getting it all set up correctly and putting lighter gauge strings on. People do that intentionally to build speed.
Keeping with the theme of ridiculously affordable guitars in ridiculously cool colors… You can grab the Epiphone Les Paul SL from Thomann here: bit.ly/2BknDvy
Man toss some hot rails into that thing and some new wiring and maybe some new tuners and bam you got a rock n roll machine, don't know if it'd handle metal but hard rock for sure
I know right! It's so annoying. I was looking at Fender Mustang guitars the other day and they come in like Black, White and Olive. Meanwhile the cheaper Squier Vintage Modified Mustang comes in freakin' Sonic Blue. Life!
I really appreciate that man. I've never thought of myself as that good a musician, but I like to think I can put a decent song together :) I might look into putting together an EP with Reese or something!
I put on a $12 set of sealed tuning keys and replaced the pickups with some SD Hot Rails I had laying around. I love my SL. You can't expect perfection out of the box for a $99 guitar, but with a few tweaks, I've got really cool looking player. I think I'm going to buy another one and see what it sounds like with lipstick pickups.
Received mine yesterday, in Vintage Sunburst. Here is what I think: These guitars, like most well made epiphone entry-level models, need nothing more than fresh strings and a good setup. But it goes beyond just slapping strings on. Lot's of noobs complain about how the tuners suck, and how quick they were to replace them. Some already had the replacements before the guitar! If you string up using the locking method, demonstrated by Gary Brawer (look him up), you can enjoy the most budget guitars without having to replace a thing (as long as they are well built guitars, like Epiphones are). With the locking method of stringing, lubricating the nut with a pencil, and properly stretching the strings, I can keep it perfectly in tune, no slipping at the tuner or buzzing or problems with the nut. Everything works as it should. The wraparound bridge, another common hasty replacement, works perfectly as well. I use 9-42 D'Addario strings and play blues, jazz, classic rock and alternative rock and the pickups will play any of these genres well. The pickups, which you can adjust (modders rarely do this, but they are quick to throw in replacements which they still do not adjust smh) sound great and remind me of a telecaster tone, although sometimes it sounds like p90s. Also, I wish I could share a picture of the frets: they are medium jumbo and perfectly installed, it would seem the neck was pulled from a much more expensive Epiphone, that's how nice they are. I polished them and they look great, no fret spout or sharp frets as reported by other people when they first came out. I put chrome telecaster knobs on it and I am happy with it stock. Bottom line: get one and enjoy it for what it is. If you are a modder, at least spend time with it before throwing unnecessary components that will take time and money away when you can be enjoying this. If you have some decent amps, tube or not, or modeling amps, you will find many great tones with this cheap but killer ax. I got the satin finish and it is a resonant joy to play.
I feel like this would make a great alternative to the DIY packages you see around. Basically a functional guitar made for modding. I really love the paint schemes too.
I’ve looked into both. I can get a DIY Les Paul Junior kit with a P90, solid mahogany body and neck for a comparable price. I think that’s a better deal because you’re starting with a better foundation to build on.
#SquadsOnSquads Honestly, this is a blend of features I am completely okay with. This is as close as we'll get to the what-if Fender bought Gibson scenario. Great playing as usual Hunter. Perhaps you could try and get a Jimi Hendrix vibe by putting it into your slightly driven Marshall and a fuzz pedal.
This may be akin to applauding 'witchcraft', but my wife's Melody Maker stays in tune better than my (very traditional) Les Paul... though not as well as her SG HP G-Force... straight run to the tuner from the nut does seem to help :-) @@agufish
Is it weird that I think this is the best song you have ever done? I love your metal tunes, but I was transported back to the 80's. Great video. Thanks bro.
I think this will be my last guitar for a while. On a serious note, your tune you played in the beginning was completely beautiful. Absolutely majestic.
Haha I ordered mine today to do a video. Seems to be about what I'd expect for this price range. You coaxed some rather pleasing tones out of it though. Well done man!
Love this video man, as much as I enjoy your brutal metal demos, this was a nice change and suited the guitar well, I reckon it wouldn’t hurt to do that sort of demo song for other products that may not be completely metal. On a another note, I’ve heard worse sounding guitars for more $$$$, this demo really demonstrated what the pickups can do, I agree with your comment on the hum from the pickups though. Keep up the great work dude!
yeah, and $70 at guitar fetish can get you a descent set of pickups and pots that are plug and play easy to install...not amazing, but for a total out of pocket under $200 it is definitely a 'value'...but for $200 and 30 days to get to the US from Germany, a Harley Benton is slightly better for those not wanting to do any work.
This guitar might not be that great but you made it sound amazing. Rule #1 on guitars: the player matters infinitely more than the guitar. Rule #2: learn to play. Rule #3: buy the best you can afford and upgrade when possible.
Bought one recently and it was of the later revision. It only cost me £46 due to it having some slight body damage caused during transit to the guitar store from epiphone. The tuning stability and sharp frets haven't proven to be an issue and it's a great guitar to keep around like near the sofa just to practice on while watching TV or just for a cheap, workhorse guitar
Young Frankenstein i spoke too soon, his newest video is basically this, but Gibson and $300 more lmao. Honestly with this i can kinda forgive it, because its so cheap and is trying to be for people who REALLY cant afford a guitar but want a factory new guitar. I dont think its trying to be great, its trying to just be playable. I guess its a perfect analogy though, epiphones done what gibsons done, though gibsons literally charging 3x as much cos its "murican".
It is sad really, Epiphone should mean something...instead it gets pigeon holed into building knock offs of Gibson guitars or watching their superior arch-top designs get some fancier inlays and a Gibson logo on the headstock. I hope Gibson starts to fail even harder and they have to sell the Epiphone name to a company or person that truly loves music and understands the history of the Epiphone brand. If Epiphone wouldn't have lost a ton of money from retooling their factory to help with WWII, CMI couldn't have bought them and Gibson would have lost to them in the Arch-top and Amplifier market big time...the Les Paul would have been on a different headstock as well (Probably Fender). Let's not forget, while the Les Paul, SG, and Firebird were awesome, if you wanted a semi-hollow, acoustic, or mandolin the Epiphone was leaps and bounds better to play than the Gibsons (though the Gibsons were still mandated to be prettier).
I am an Epiphone fan and bought one from Musicians Friend. They came back and said it was on back order and I would not get it for 6 weeks. GC had the Epiphone LP Special P-90 for only $119 . MF price matched for me and I got a much better guitar for only $20 more. It is a fun one to play with! I am another new sub, keep up the great work! In The Blues Shane gave you a good plug today!
I think this guitar sounds OK as long as you don't expect it to sound like a Les Paul. Really with that pickup configuration it is closer to a Telecaster. I would be interested in finding out how it sounds with a couple of stacked humbuckers like Seymour Duncan Hotrails. Otherwise I would also want to change the tuners, maybe for locking tuners. The bridge would be trickier. I think I would have to swap it for a tunematic bridge and drill out holes, installing ferrules to turn it into a string through arrangements which should help the tone. Another bridge option which could be good for this kind of guitar is to install a Bigsby trem.
I love the look of it.. I love cheap guitars and I’d love to own one and upgrade it to oblivion so I can say I own an SL and be proud of it. It’s not really much worse than the M2 and you save $300 brand new which could be used for upgrades.. I want one omg
I just bought one of these for a Nashville strung guitar. For those who are not familiar with Nashville tuning, its the six high strings on a twelve string guitar. This was cheaper than a Squire Affinity and also this guitar is a jangle machine, not a rock monster.
Am a new subscriber and wanted to say I love these reviews you do. The reviews are down to earth with tight playing to match. You said you don't like ibanez but alot of us guitarist do so it would be nice if you at least tried a few seeming you try everything else.
You hit the nail on the head....it’s a cheap, but FUN guitar to play! I have one, and prefer playing it over my more expensive guitars, mainly because it’s so lightweight & well-balanced. It feels extremely COMFORTABLE, even while standing up! Just replace the tuners & bridge & (maybe) the pick-ups (I don’t think the ones on mine are half-bad...do this last, and only if you have any $$$ left over), and you’ll have yourself one COOL little guitar, that LOOKS famous! LOVE the COLORS! My yellow SL really commands attention! Keep up with the informative reviews, too..........
This was my first guitar I remember my mom got it for me when I was in 6th grade a year after Epiphone released them i didn’t get around to learning it until 7th grade (I had lessons in 6th grade but my old guitar teacher sucked ass and barley taught me anything just 3 notes and 2 chords) when we had music class and we learned more guitar chords and I started getting around to learning guitar riffs like “Crazy Train” and “Come As You Are” and I started learning power chords and pentatonic scales.Sadly I don’t have this guitar anymore i got rid of it 2 months after I got a Jackson JS11 guitar because it stopped working and the tuning peg for the high E string turns the other way when I have to tune it up and every time I would plug it In it wouldn’t work and kept on cutting out and the strap pegs came loose so I threw it out but saluted it before I did
was i the only one pleasantly surprised by his playing here? like sure a friend wrote it but the tune he made behind it and how he played the solo impresses me. more of a lead ax man than he gives himself credit fur. thumbs up man ^~^
Thanks for the honest, well-balanced review. I think you just saved me a hundred bucks! The ironic thing is that by the time you get done replacing the tuners, nut and bridge, you could spend more than the original cost of the entire guitar.
Glad I could help man! I think someone on another channel did just that. And sometimes ridiculous projects like that are just fun. I'm modding a pink $30 strat into an absolute monster just because lol.
If your into building or tweaking guitars this might be a good choice. the whole thing is less than the cost of an allparts neck. if you where to buy it, strip the electronics (I assume strat pickups fit in there) switch the pickups, pots, and shield the body. than get better tuners and a nut and you could probably get something pretty cool
I got my SL and it is great. Out of the box it tunes up and holds tune, no sharp frets, no toy like feeling...maybe I was lucky...maybe I'm not a guitar cork-sniffing- snob. It's $99! what were you expecting! I have other guitars and I agree this is just fun to play.
Don't forget... the Gibson 'Melody Maker' mentioned IS (also) a Les Paul. Seriously. My wife has one (among many Gibsons) and she loves it. I agree with the 'Sweet Sixteen' vibe.... my daughter's getting one on XMAS morning, but she is 13. She loves Taylor Swift of course.... but also The Replacements, The Cure, Radio Birdman, Nick Cave, The Buzzcocks, Verruca Salt, The Clash, Led Zeppelin and more. When I first saw this guitar, that was the vibe I got... trashy, thrashy, loud... Ramones, MC5, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, etc, etc. She can borrow my RAT pedal and do every gig til she's 20 and not get accused of 'selling out' :-)
As you pointed out, apart from anything else, I'm not sure in what sense this can be called a 'Les Paul'. It looks nothing like one, it's not made of the same (or even similar) materials, it's got single coils and one tone and one volume pot, the switch is in the wrong place, as is the jack, the pickguard has sod all to do with a Les Paul, it's got a wraparound bridge, and a flat top!
I found mine to be great, finish is perfect, tuners while cheap hold tune fine, frets aren't sharp at all, neck pup is great, bridge isn't, if you are a modder these are a fantastic buy imho.
I like how this guitar is comparable to the Firebird Zero. But even with that comparison, this guitar would come out on top just due to price and accessibility.
My SL arrived with a split in the headstock cos one tuner screw pilot hole wasn't drilled deep enough. that being said the fretwork is immaculate. it has a little neck pocket gap, not too bad at all. I dowelled the old tuner holes and glued the split, and put some strip style cheapy tuners on it. bridge had to go because it was made of cheese and i was snapping strings. after those changes, ( i got a partial refund) it's now a good guitar!
Nice video. Just an FYI though, if I may, on the subject of finishes- on a cheaper guitar such as this one the basic woodwork is going to be far from perfect and manufacturers will cover up this fact with thicker finishes (probably why your roommate thought it was plastic, actually) and when the guitars get ridiculously cheap then what you end up with is a rough chunk of wood + really thick lacquer that hasn't been flatted properly, which then results in the unevenness you mentioned in the video. "Paper thin" finishes are much more common on high end instruments (esp acoustic guitars) where the wood underneath is even and smooth enough to begin with.
Good point. I was going by paper thin merely because you could still kind of see where the different pieces of wood were joined even through the finish lol. In all likelihood you're right, they probably tried to make it as thick as possible.
Agufish even a guitar this cheap must have gone through a belt sander or something after the pieces of the body are joined. It's probably some kind of uneven shrinkage and happens after the guitar has been right through the finishing process, dragging what was previously a flat (ish in this case I'm sure lol) finish with it. I actually have a MIJ Jackson with a veneer top, and you can just about see the join line of the main body wood through not only the finish but also the veneer lol, it must have been flat before the veneer went on tho
I've had one of these (vintage Cherry) for a while. The pups are low output and thin sounding but it has it's own sound. Noisy - yes but at least they are wired out of phase in the middle position which cancels most of the hum. I tried it with the band but couldn't use it - so light it felt like it was going to fly away. Couldn't hold it even with a decent strap. At least it's fun at home.
Less Paul
Truth.
Nope
I lawl'd
Jajajajajaja
If it means these can go into the hands of kids, or beginners faster rather than them glued to an iPad/iPhone 24/7.
Im all for this, get em rockin!
Yeah I can zip around pretty quick
This is my second guitar
My first was a strat copy I plan on modding and it’s getting the same mods I want to put on my epiphone (dimarzio PAF DP103s)
and it is cheaper xd
Keeping with the theme of ridiculously affordable guitars in ridiculously cool colors…
You can grab the Epiphone Les Paul SL from Thomann here: bit.ly/2BknDvy
lol 60 Cycle Hum has an obsession with this guitar, seems like a nice little dinky to mod
It needs more stickers on the back of the headstock :)
Life!
I agree - or GFS Lil Killers for a budget pickup option to make this thing a humbucking animal.
Saying "I own a Les Paul" now comes with an even bigger asterisk.
Chris House lol
who is proud to own a les paul? ;)
Michael Peretto les Pauls were awesome until Gibson went under pretty recently
Gage Quinn the guitar model is not any less cool just because the person who now runs gibson doesn't give a shit.
Bragging about owning a Les Paul is for snobs.
10:21 Your flatmate unveils the guitar's secret... when held upside down you reveal the cute dinosaur shaped pick guard!
$30 Strat vs Epiphone SL vs Gibson Firebird Zero must happen!
I refuse to play another Firebird Zero. It automatically loses lol
Even if it is for greater good? :'(
A Firebird Zero with new tuners, nut, electronics, and Dimarzio pickups isn't bad.
y e s
Dude, seriously, you're great. Your videos are cool and all, but you're a fantastic musician. You should get music out there, man.
Also, redo this track with a proper LP, pretty sure it'll kill.
I really appreciate that man. I've never thought of myself as that good a musician, but I like to think I can put a decent song together :) I might look into putting together an EP with Reese or something!

The songs sounds like a corporate group advertisment trying to sell retirement plans. Stock old people video everywhere.
+Juani Müller LOL. Stock old people are best old people?
You've said it.
or every U2 song ever ;)
New old stock people
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is the most djent guitar I have ever heard
Received mine yesterday, in Vintage Sunburst. Here is what I think:

I feel like this would make a great alternative to the DIY packages you see around. Basically a functional guitar made for modding. I really love the paint schemes too.
I’ve looked into both. I can get a DIY Les Paul Junior kit with a P90, solid mahogany body and neck for a comparable price. I think that’s a better deal because you’re starting with a better foundation to build on.
great guitar for funk and clean tones! love it! the black one looks great!
Im so glad that Im not the only one who plays the intro to fade to black with fingerstyle. :)
chøke Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be played?
#SquadsOnSquads
Honestly, this is a blend of features I am completely okay with. This is as close as we'll get to the what-if Fender bought Gibson scenario. Great playing as usual Hunter.
Perhaps you could try and get a Jimi Hendrix vibe by putting it into your slightly driven Marshall and a fuzz pedal.
Damn Hunter, nice track! Good to see you show off more of your different, non Djent or 'ALL-THE-GAIN!' style stuff. Keep it up dude!
Maybe Melody Makers stay in tune, so that's why they branded it with the Les Paul Moniker?
lolol
This may be akin to applauding 'witchcraft', but my wife's Melody Maker stays in tune better than my (very traditional) Les Paul... though not as well as her SG HP G-Force... straight run to the tuner from the nut does seem to help :-) @@agufish

From all your songs, this melodic piece is absolutely my favorite! Awesome how you used Fade to Black for the clean demo 🤘
Usually just come for the review, but that demo track sounded beautiful, solo and all! Keep up the great content ;)
Hunter is the least metal man striving for the most metal tones
Haha I ordered mine today to do a video. Seems to be about what I'd expect for this price range. You coaxed some rather pleasing tones out of it though. Well done man!

Nice man glad to see you're dabbling more with leads
Excellent review. You caught a lot of issues missed by other youtubers
Love your videos mate. You certainly put the work in to keep quality high.
Yay! Another Agufish video!
Bought one recently and it was of the later revision. It only cost me £46 due to it having some slight body damage caused during transit to the guitar store from epiphone. The tuning stability and sharp frets haven't proven to be an issue and it's a great guitar to keep around like near the sofa just to practice on while watching TV or just for a cheap, workhorse guitar
this thing should have Gibson on the headstock, it lowkey embarrasses epiphone and would fit right in with Gibsons QC 👌
*+James Parkin* My neck hurts from nodding in agreement with this. This is nothing more than a budget M2, of all the sad shit in the world to be.
Young Frankenstein i spoke too soon, his newest video is basically this, but Gibson and $300 more lmao. Those insane U2 vibes.

Now it just needs a metalzone and a Line 6 Spider II
That's it's target audience lmao. But I use a behringer um300 and a 80s peavey. Sounds very nirvana-y. Sounds like something kurt cobain would use.
Heck yeh...lol

My views on guitar have changed much since this comment. I’d never own this or an M2 lol
This song is legit! Just added it from iTunes! Also, i just got my Epiphone Les Paul SL in the mail! So pumped!!
😎🤘
intheblues legit came here after watching one of your vids 😅
Cheers man! :-)
❤️💩🔥
Better than the old Special II, but the Studio LT never beats the LP 100.
A quickly-done but nicely put review!
The video sounds great man nice playing
Killer solo dude! Definitely making some impressive improvements dude. Well done.
You can thank Pad for writing it :)
I just bought one of these for a Nashville strung guitar. For those who are not familiar with Nashville tuning, its the six high strings on a twelve string guitar. This was cheaper than a Squire Affinity and also this guitar is a jangle machine, not a rock monster.
The chill toon sounds great!!

Clean tones are surprisingly good
The demo song sounded good, it reminded me a bit like Angel and Airwaves. I can see people buying these to learn how to setup/mod a guitar.
Great song and epic solo. Keep it up! :D
Thanks Patrick!
Loved the *djents poorly* it genuinely made me crack up
i dont see the point when you can buy used Epi LPJs for 50-75 bucks all day and they have a single hum that works for blues and metal.
The demo song actually kinda sounds very Breaking Benish. Love it!
go man. review. Epiphone les paul custom pro, and Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom Plus EX
That solo was very slash-esque. Super clean playing
Amazing playing 😍😍😍
Your 30 dollars strat sounds better
It's pretty as hell and sounds decent enough..
Edit: for a first guitar..
I think it's good enough for a kid that just wants to rock..
Honestly this is probably my favorite guitar review channel, great work.
So this isnt the best choice for the first les paul you own?
New tuners, nut and bridge as well as some lipstick pickups this would be a good guitar.
KEK lol put more money into it than the guitar is even worth
covfefe sounds like a danelectro
Basically
was i the only one pleasantly surprised by his playing here? like sure a friend wrote it but the tune he made behind it and how he played the solo impresses me. more of a lead ax man than he gives himself credit fur. thumbs up man ^~^

I'll probably slap some Hot Rail pickups on that thing to make it chug atleast.
I played one of these the other day and i suprisingly liked it, especially the feel. Imo
I would spend like 50 bucks on a tab book of all your demos. This one kills.
I have other guitars and I agree this is just fun to play.
shoutout to pad, the real mvp
Spend a few bucks more for the Jr w/single humbucker. Notch bridge. Lube nut. Replace rusty noodles with 11s.
Nice finish...plan to buy & upgrade the machine head..thanks for revieq this guitar...
change the pickups to SD
hotrails, CTS pots, orange drop cap. and it will rocks
Love this little tune...😊
Thanks Chris!
The song reminds me of what ONE OK ROCK will make, love the review!
I found mine to be great, finish is perfect, tuners while cheap hold tune fine, frets aren't sharp at all, neck pup is great, bridge isn't, if you are a modder these are a fantastic buy imho.
Getting this for my lads 7th birthday. He can beat the carp out of it and it'll still be fine, and if not. Oh well, it's 100
One issue even experienced 'players' fail to ever mention or realize is that strings need to be stretched and settled.
I like how this guitar is comparable to the Firebird Zero. But even with that comparison, this guitar would come out on top just due to price and accessibility.
It's good for an intro Djent then have some heavy ones after
Jesus, those fret ends look sharp as fuck.
I would actually be interested in a follow up video where you upgrade this thing. New pickups, tuners, maybe a new bridge?
Nice New subscriber not regretting it love the vids keep them up
Thanks man!
MOD THE HECK OUT OF IT!
Anyone else getting some hardcore Breaking Benjamin clean section vibes from this? I love it!
Agufish, I've never been a 'gearhead' in music myself... but just for the record, I really like your playing :)
Appreciate you checking out the video anyways man, glad you dug at least part of it!
I keep going back to the 1:00 mark. Oh man, that's really nice!!
Hey hunter, what's your take on gretsch guitars? Are they old school or an underrated beast? And do they djent?
No but seriously with your playing you can make that thing sound awesome
Nice solo Pad
My SL arrived with a split in the headstock cos one tuner screw pilot hole wasn't drilled deep enough. that being said the fretwork is immaculate. it has a little neck pocket gap, not too bad at all. I dowelled the old tuner holes and glued the split, and put some strip style cheapy tuners on it. bridge had to go because it was made of cheese and i was snapping strings. after those changes, ( i got a partial refund) it's now a good guitar!
and now lets hear some "dirty" tones.....*hummmmmmmm*
those tones are Filthy. disgusting even!
Great tune! Do a review of an oil can guitar and you are a hero
cool video! but you didn't answer the mystery (unless I just missed it) . what does SL stand for? I can think of some great names. :P
Agufish you could see joins on the front? That's interesting if so. I'd heard a rumour that the body on this is plywood but that would imply otherwise
I actually have a MIJ Jackson with a veneer top, and you can just about see the join line of the main body wood through not only the finish but also the veneer lol, it must have been flat before the veneer went on tho
is this good for a beginner? planning to buy this then go for a tele or strat next
But is it better than the Firebird Zero?
