Wow, friend! This really is mastering the art of the "red herring"! I used to wish that I had the ability to distract focus from the obvious by presenting something else just as obvious -- there is a LOT of money to be made for people with this skill! Over time, I decided it was much better suited for me, and much easier on my conscious, to simply state the facts as they are, such as this example of the cult using a very similar technique. (Being honest helps with trust, I've learned. People tend to sense when they are being manipulated)
