So, it finally happened. UMG manually claimed the video, just as they did with IHE, Pyrocynical, Dolan Dark and others. And if you're wondering, this has nothing to do with the use of a song in the background - Dolan's video didn't contain either of the songs for which they claimed his video. My video wasn't monetised in the first place, but it's the principle of it that fucks me off. I'm seriously considering taking the video down and reuploading it without the background songs, but those corporate cunts would probably claim it again regardless, so it will stay up for now.

There's so much more I could have said about the Rewind. I wanted to make something more in-depth, exploring every aspect of why it was such a colossal piece of shit, but I simply won't have the time. I hope you enjoy this anyway!

I reckon this year's rewind is actually a pretty good summary of UA-cam currently. A corporate, cynical (in a bad way), pandering, pro-censorship, frankly insulting cultural wasteland that is only a shell of it's former self. It's a slap in the face of people who put in actual work and creativity on this site.
I just looked at the first Rewind from 2011 and it's like night and day. That one got a lot of downvotes simply because of Rebecca Black. Her online debut was infamous but she's actually not a bad singer. But if you saw the other content it actually honored individual creators including a top 10 list with many of them being home videos

Should i feel bad for running into TT by Twice a month ago and binging K-pop ever since? x.x There's a lot of throwbacks to 80s and 90s which i consider musically my home turf, and the visual creativity across K-pop as a whole is on another level from anything seen before.

The lack of reference to Stan Lee may have made sense due to his passing being more recent, but Stefan Karl illness and passing made a huge boom on the internet months ago. There would have been plenty of time to throw in a reference to "We are number one".

Their censorship will be to the point that like at the very least around 60% of their content will be removed in Europe, which will severally interfere with their income. ( This goes out to reviews, game play throughs, parodies etc etc ) if article 13 gets approved

I am glad Mark was in it despite him not really needing the exposure. It does make me happy they recognize the good he's doing... Despite them ignoring other equally helpful people.
I was wondering if the blowback and criticism of this year's rewind might actually catch UA-cam's attention. Compelling them to try improve the platform for all their creator's, big and small.

I'm not saying that yt rewind wasn't shit, IT IS but when you said, "give a platform to some talented but criminally under-subbed creators" is just ironic that you continued to say shit like "who are you?" to some youtubers that has 1 million subs. People complain that yt rewind has too many UA-camrs that they don't recognize but if they add creators that are under-subbed you probably won't recognize most of them too. Do you not realize the arguments you're trying to make?

One of my friends actually texted me about youtube rewind telling me the fact they deleted half the views for idol by bts in its first few weeks and forget like it even happened by adding it in there was honestly strange and she also thought it was kind of strange that they even did a youtube rewind this year because it was such a bad year for youtube
This has been my favorite YTR 2018 review - and trust me, I've seen A LOT over the past day. The end clip was so good it literally brought tears to my eyes. I genuinely think rewind sucked too but the complaint I repeatedly see of “who are these people” doesn’t make sense. You don’t know these people? Well they weren’t meant to cater specifically to YOU because a lot of people DO know them. Also, when you complain that you don’t know these people but yet want UA-cam to include and bring attention to smaller content creators wouldn’t even more people say “I don’t know these people” as they’d be smaller channels. Regardless people would complain. I fucking hate the rewind but because it was disconnected random garbage - not because of that one confusing complaint.

The last part where you used I am Legend was one of my favorite (even depressing scene) scenes of the movie. But it was a perfect metaphor/use of that scene to show off what needs to be done with UA-cam if it's going to get any better than it has been in years. Maybe it doesn't need to be that extreme but there needs to be a change for the better if UA-cam is going to improve.

Some of this I actually recognized. But to be fair UA-cam remind often highlights things that leak INTO UA-cam and get big views. Fortnite is one of the biggest games, BTS ARMY (which u am apart of) KILLED IT on breaking music view count and like count records within the first 24 hours on MULTIPLE songs and thus opening them up to the trending page and bringing in more interest in the K-music industry. In addition it was a trend to try food from different cultures, one of the biggest being Korean food. Saf mentioning the science behind melting lipstick is because of her "mixing all of ____ together" series which she mixes a lot of one type of makeup product together to see the median colour and how it performs.
That's not to say UA-cam rewind isn't shit, because it is pretty bad, but a bit better than last year if you ask me. It's basically just a recap of trends and memes that get the most views. You and I may not recognize some people, but they may not be catering to our demographic or tastes so it's natural we wouldn't recognize a lot.

I think all of the underrated UA-camrs should have their own UA-cam rewind.
At least they gave lines to UA-camrs from another countries instead of showing them for a fraction of a second. I enjoyed seeing Brazilian UA-camrs there, UA-cam is huge in Brazil and this company should give us more attention

There's one thing I need to say, I absolutely hate the "who" joke/argument because:
1. Of course you're not going to know every single UA-camr, some are just about a different topic than you like and some are in an entirely different language. Liza is an extremely big youtube/internet star who has been leaking into the mainstream, which is very important as it shows that the internet is a thing to take seriously.
2. It goes against wanting Rewind to represent smaller channels as even more people would just go "who".
3. It's just a hollow unoriginal joke. Seeing it on a review channel is disappointing as it really has no substance to it, it doesn't contribute to the actual review.
You can't watch a single video about UA-cam rewind without someone saying "who are these people".
IceSanta I think the argument is more along the lines of it feeling like random people instead of what the real highlights of the year were for most people. For example it would be like if I was doing a rewind of 2018 and took time to focus on the logging industry, competitive tag, and a random national swimming tournament. Sure those are all massive in their own right and in the appropriate channels will get their own recognition but for the vast majority of people they have absolutely no direct bearing on their life and weren't even encountered during the year. Because of that it misses the point of the rewind, a general view to look back on the big things for the majority of us this year. One thing though is I don't think this works if you are also making a criticism about "big youtubers" because unless the big youtubers did nothing significant they would definitely be are part of most people's year. However big has to grow with the platform and so relatively speaking what we generally think of as big -- over 1-2 million -- doesn't really cut it anymore. Also I don't think it makes sense to have big youtubers in the rewind if they stay isolated in their own little bubble of the internet because even the largest youtubers cover a tiny fraction of the whole userbase. It would make more sense to have the icons of the more broad-reaching trends that everyone can connect to. However if people wanted to see some of the more new and niche things about youtube you could make a sister production "youtube spotlight" where you can show the new growths that happened throughout the year that didn't necessarily go mainstream but actually did make a change. Hope this clarifies what (I think) people mean when they bring up the who argument, because honestly "who?' isn't very clear and the argument is very easy to conflate into meaning something completely different. Its more of because in previous years there were a lot more people that everyone knew about and that were huge channels. Over the years it seems less and less of these hugely recognised channels are being shown on them. I mean look back at the 2013 one or something, it had a lot more references and people that the majority of UA-cam viewers knew of and recognised.

This could've been a good video if only you didn't complain about everything. Rewind was shit. They put way too much Fortnite, there weren't any OG UA-camrs, they put on way too much money hungry unfunny UA-camrs, they absolutely didn't care about the comments etc.
