An Internship in the Land in the Shadows - A documentary by Yann Gengler

In February 2023, a group of interns of all ages lived and worked together for two weeks on the film set of "The Land in Shadows".

This film was directed by Yann Gengler and co-produced by Two Steps Twice in cooperation with Respect.lu.

Yann's Statement about the film: Director Treatment: Usually they are just interns remaining in the shadows but this time the spotlight is on them. The narrative follows ten young film curious students sharing their experience on set, but also going trough workshops and learning about inclusion, racism arising from stereotypes and stigmatisation. Since the whole crew is not just making a movie about a village against political left wing ideals the crew becomes the villagers in a metaphorical way while living on set for about 2 weeks. Lukas Grevis director of the educational movie “The Land in the Shadows” talks about the dark traits of the villagers and how close to reality the premise of the movie is. The importance lies in raising the question of: What is really missing so that we go as far as excluding others just to protect an idea of unity? Which is a paradox in it self.The interns explain how included they felt in making the movie and how much they all grew together. It seems like they forgot that they were interns but became crucial members of the crew on set.
Yann Lazar Gengler is a 27 year old filmmaker born in Luxembourg. Being part of the independent art-pop band TUYS since 2012, he started his career as a director for the music videos with their EP “A CURTAIN CALL FOR DREAMERS”, which is a five episode series of music videos released in 2021. Along with a team of young creators of the collective TWO STEPS TWICE, he pursued the craft of filmmaking in roles such as DOP, director or camera operator. Since then he directed and shot over thirty music videos produced by Tun Biever.Lately, he directed his first short film cowritten by Tun Biever for the album of TUYS entitled “REALITY MANAGEMENT Ltd.” and codirected by Max Thommas, actor and musician also known as Das Radial, the music video for “TERROR TERRESTRIS”. In these two projects he got to further explore dystopian cosmos and timeless aesthetics which is a recurring theme in his art. After exploring metafictional filmmaking he jumped in to the world of documentary and follows the upcoming artist Thomas Faber, emo-rap-poet also known as Maz Universe and directs the ongoing documentary of “THE BOY WITH HORNS ON HIS HEAD”.
His documentary style and camera work evolved through further documentary collaborations for Kultur Lx | Arts council Luxembourg and practicing photography on diverse film sets and documenting his surroundings.
