    If you pay close attention, you can actually tell in EVERY scene Borden is in which one is Albert and which one is Frederick (for those of you who don’t know, that is the name of each of them as their names together form “Alfred.”)
    Frederick: the one who follows Angier down below the stage and every subsequent scene of him in prison/trial/execution. Obviously.
    Frederick: first time we see Borden when he’s on the stage performing the underwater trick since he flies off the handle more and discusses changing knots.
    Albert: the one who sees the show with the Chinese man. This COULD be Frederick but he just seems softer and nicer to Angier.
    Albert: the one who performs the bird trick with Virgil and follows Sarah and her nephew. Frederick is the one waiting for her in her apartment pouring tea.
    Frederick: the one who talks to Sarah about the bullet catch. Obviously it’s him because she catches him when she doesn’t believe him when he says “I love you.” Also when she mentions she’s pregnant and he says, “We should’ve told Fallon!” Because he knew he’s the father.
    Albert: the one who visits Angier. “I’m sorry for your loss, Angier.” He didn’t know which knot his brother tied and he’s nicer and sincere.
    Albert: the one performing the ring trick and gets his fingers shot off.
    Frederick: “it’s as bad as it was.” “We can’t AFFORD (bang!) the bloody doctor back.”
    Albert: the one who pulled the key for his family and said, “You caught me in the wrong mood.”
    Albert/Frederick: performing the transported man trick. Don’t know who’s who though.
    Frederick: the one Olivia initially talks to when Angier sends her there.
    Frederick: the one who manipulates Root in the bar and takes Angier’s spot in his magic act. Just a viciousness that Frederick demonstrates.
    Albert: the one who gets trapped in the coffin. This is apparent because later at dinner, it’s obviously Frederick who was being called “Freddy” by Olivia (which he likes because it more closely resembles his real name.) and since he was the one who said he thought he’d lost something very dear to him (his brother).
    Albert: the one who talks to Jess about going to the zoo and can barely look at Olivia 5 minutes later.
    Frederick: the one who gets into a shouting match with Sarah and really loses it when she says “I know what you really are...” (an improvised line by Rebecca Hall by the way which is really cool) and even more heartbreaking to see Albert (as Fallon) picking up Jess sweetly while she cries.
    Frederick: the one who tries to win back Olivia after Sarah’s suicide, assuring he never loved Sarah.
    Albert: “They do this after every show? We’re done. I don’t need his trick. The two of us, we’ll just leave him alone. We’re done.”
    Albert: the one at the end who kills Angier and picks up Sarah from Cutter.
    So props to Christian Bale for subtly portraying 2 different people that’s obvious after many viewings but subtle enough to not spoil it for someone’s first time watching. And it becomes clear that between Angier, Albert and Frederick, 2 of the 3 were “bad” and one was good. Albert was kind, a good father, a wonderful magician, but not obsessed, didn’t kill Julia, and by the end, just wanted to be there for his daughter. Anyway, I thought maybe this would help some of you who didn’t understand parts of the movie to enjoy it more. The Prestige is a masterpiece.

    The Prestige took a critical hit because it's a Secret Sci-Fi movie. They were initially disappointed that they weren't seeing a straight forward period piece. However, both critics and audiences alike who didn't like it the first time around tend to love it on a repeat viewing because, knowing the sci-fi twist, they can see how it serves the characters and story. (Sorry to Bother You is another good example of the Secret Sci-Fi movie.)

    Outside of The Dark Knight this is my favorite Nolan movie. It’s hard to say it’s better than Inception or Interstellar, but I just like how the story is both so simple and so complex. In those movies the story feels so big or the stakes are high, but in this it’s just a rivalry gone very deadly and it’s made so masterfully and it’s so perfect that you can feel the tension and connect to the characters. Even though you’re following the characters and seeing what they do, you’re still surprised by everything and the conclusion fits everything together perfectly.

    In a way, #13 could say TWO real-life magicians have cameos in the film. You mention magician Ricky Jay who acted in the film, but also an actor in the film plays real-life magician Chung Ling Soo who died in 1918. Just as in real life, the character is presented as a Chinese magician, though he was actually an American of Scottish decent. It was only upon his death that the general public learned that he was not Chinese.

    The film and the book are completely different.
    From character motivations, relationships, how the machine works and even the meaning of the word "Prestige".
    Their entire rivalry starts from Borden interrupting Angier's seance in a home. The men not even knowing each other, Borden feels the need to stop such scams. While acting as part of the seance and sabotaging it, Borden creates a commotion which leads to Angier's assistant/wife to have a miscarriage (she doesn't die).

    Just a note on a key aspect of the plot you seemed to overlook. There was NO TWIN! Both magicians used clones created by Telsa. One realized right away what had happened and left Tesla thinking the machine did not work. His method was to make the two of himself one man where the other decided to continue cloning and killing one version each time as he went.

    • @Prototyp3m1nd

    • @oldDNU
      @oldDNU 4 роки тому +3

      I'm seeing this theory pop up a lot in these comments, but it doesn't hold up. Here's why:
      1. Borden knew Angiers would read his journal, so he put Tesla in there as a red herring. Angiers took the bait and left for months as a result. It makes sense that Angiers would fall for it--he refused Michael Caine's correct assumption on how the Transported Man worked and believed it would be something more fantastical.
      2. When Angiers commissions Tesla to build a teleporter, Tesla replies "Nothing is impossible, Mr. Angier. What you want is simply expensive." It's later revealed that Angiers comes from considerable wealth. Borden did not. How would Borden pay for it?

  • @libradawg9
    @libradawg9 4 роки тому +1

    Roger Ebert said that he docked major points for making a period piece into sci-fi. He's the best anything ever but I disagree with him. Tesla either did or did not make a sci-fi machine, that's interpretation. But the element is not out of line for what is somewhat of a fantasy movie; electricity is invented and the words *real magic* are admissible court testimony.
    That's why critics were docking it, but the reviews are still always above average.

    They weren't brothers. Borden used tesla once. Thats why his secret was his name. But they share a life opposed to choosing each time. There was no twins. They were just a single copy. Every one gets this wrong and it has lead to some lengthy conversations. Watch it again without the twins but single copy and it all makes so much more sense then him randomly coming up with a twin and then randomly having tesla with cloning ability as his codex.

      Patzer because he was a twin. Borden had Tesla in his journal as a red herring to get Angiers out of town for a while. Angiers hired Tesla to create a teleportation device. Tesla accidentally invented a cloning device instead, something they were unaware of until finding the pile of hats outside the lab where they materialized.

      In fact he's BOTH twin brothers, technically - since each of the twins takes on his persona at different points of the film.

      @gabbertron_ 4 роки тому

      Iain Meldrum you’re forgetting the scene where Angier has Fallon buried, trying to get the cypher for Borden’s journal and he gives him Tesla. Stating Tesla is the method. He had gone and seen Tesla before Angier ever did. That’s how Tesla knew he could build the machine. Because he successfully cloned Borden.

    • @iainjames03
      @iainjames03 4 роки тому +1

      @@gabbertron_ I'll agree that Nolan leaves this deliberately ambiguous - as he often does. But it's stated - by Borden himself in his decoded 'diary' - that 'Tesla' was just the cipher for that diary, nothing more. Angier also complains to Mr Alley that Tesla had never made the machine for anyone before and Alley responds that Tesla never claimed he had. In fact if you read Christopher Priest's original book the Bordens are given more backstory and it's spelled out that they are two twin brothers named Albert and Frederick.

      He's a twin, it's the whole thematic point of the movie. That the greater the prestige (in both senses of the word) the greater the sacrifice. Angier was always looking for a shortcut and ended up paying the greatest sacrifice in the end
