I was Robert McFerrins care provider. I took care of for 2 years in st Louis mo. He was such a sweet, child like adult that had a heart of gold. He once said to me, ME MAN you WOMEN. I took many walks with Robert around his last place he lived. Robert sang a lot while watching himself sing. He and I would play checkers a lot, he had a unique way of playing the game. He mirrored what you did. He always made sure you went first so he could mirror you. Then if he was loosing he said to me, start all over. He hated loosing the game of checkers. Robert was funny, sweet, talented, with a heart of GOLD. I had the honor of meeting his son Bobby McFerrin, Brenda his daughter, and Sarah his first wife at his funeral. I love you Robert thanks for the MEMORIES Love JOAN
Seeing him sing surprised me and watered my eyes because this great singer was once my voice coach! I also had the privilege of meeting Bobby Mcferrin, his son at a concert back stage! Robert Mcferrin was the first black opera singer to sign with the metropolitan opera in New New!
@@LyndonLaRoucheArchive I can imagine -- that must have been thrilling! I still have chills from listening to him sing "An die Musik." Thank you again.
@@dianeforti8696 These concerts were my first exposure to real classical music so I wasn't up to speed about the historical significance of his performances but despite that and his very frail appearance, the minute he started singing, he grabbed your attention.
@@LyndonLaRoucheArchive I found his hand gestures so touching as he "inhabited" the character of Renato. It was transporting. Would love to have seen him in his prime.

@kgarmaker123 Shame that so little was recorded when he was younger. I'm just glad that I can share what little I have available. He had that effect on me too.
@kgarmaker123 Most of what he was doing here was because of Sylvia Olden Lee. He really was in terrible shape during this time I remember. His training and dedication to the art overcame though.

joanrifkin he was the embodiment of a Mensch, personable and incredibly kind
Okay as for me I will take this performance over most of what I hear at the Met. And again he is 72 years of age. Damn, may we all be so BLESSED !
Beautifully sung, his musicality is astonishing. As the voice warmed up, he just let the melody "play" and it was very moving to see and hear.

He still has a voice, .. he just needed time after the illness to get it in shape.. But the voice is still there! I really like this man
Even with illness and a major stroke, his breath support is amazing! Very inspirational!
I was honored to have studied voice under his guidance! He was a master opera singer! A tremendous rang! I loved him!
How was he as a teacher??
This performance is robust and moving, considering his age and state of health. Thank you for introducing me to this marvellous singer.
As someone who witnessed it, I can say that he held the entire audience spellbound.

He had some voice in his prime... It gave me goosebumps.. still does even during this.. I can hear snatches of the younger healthier man.

I guess this is where his song Bobby McFerrin got it from
It is. Thanks.
musical talent in general.
@morenaso1 I've never heard Bobby sing any opera arias before.
@sonqualnave Amen!
The first to say: Who's here because of Todd in the Shadows?
7.8 thousand people already watched this before Todd used it (without my permission).
