I might be wrong but aren't the names you listed as genus ends with 科 (ka)? I look at the page photographs in the first couple minutes and that's what it looks like If it is then that's the family suffix Genus name ends with 属 (zoku)
I find it absolutely hilarious that the guy's name is "John Arthur". Kinda reminds me of the British explorers IRL at the beginning of the colonial era that were all named stuff like "John Smith"
So here's a fun little factoid about Gypceros' extinct relative. Did you know that we actually have footage of this monster? In the original reveal for the first MH game, there's a short clip around 1:20 that shows the hunter hiding from what looks to just be a Gypceros. Look at it a bit closer, and you'll see that it has a number of differences that line up almost perfectly with the art we see of the extinct relative. From a game design standpoint, it just means that they altered Gypceros' design as the game was developed. But it's interesting to see how far along this version was. It may have been retconned out, but I always felt it was a nice touch to have it listed as recently extinct, if only as a sort of in-joke for themselves.
I always imagined gogmazios was related to the magala genus due to their skeleton, kinda weird it isn´t. Side note, hope gog returns in wilds since we have an oil area now!
that dragon family tree really weirded me out, here i thought things like Dalamadur weren't true elder but more classed it due to being so destructive, just thought it was a COLOSSAL snake wyvern and ditto Kirin, here i thought it was just a super powerful relative of the Kelbie
@@hipcheckboiii1603 i never did play Dos, and all info i saw of them always tends ot be "elders are either FLAT OUT DRAGONS or are just tat dangerous that we class them as elder" so that was what made me thing elder dragons were like a semi waste bin family
Awesome video, this is the kind of stuff that is often hard to find elsewhere, but this channel :D The monster that has puzzled me a bit is Malfestio. I was expecting its "neighbors" to be in an infraoder of their own (except for Hypnocantrice and Aknosom maybe) - something like "Featherless Bird Wyvern" or "Bat Wyvern", and Malfesion have a more direct lineage. But Malfestio is together with them apparently.
This was really cool to see uploaded on Evolution Day! Monster Hunter just cannot be beat when it comes to the hard work and care Capcom takes in making the monsters truly feel alive and part of the world around them. I loved back in the day when the older games in the series had ecology videos showcasing the monsters just existing in their natural habitats. World kinda integrated that into the game itself with how the monsters interacted with the environment when you observed them from a distance. I cannot wait to see what they've done for Wilds.
Been loving the recent bestiary videos, and now this. I love learning this kind of stuff because it often isn't easily accessible in English otherwise! Thanks for your hard work.
Gaijin describing the Ancient Serpent not beeing huge, while also saying it is double the size of Plesioth, make giggle as i look at how big Plesioth actually is. Reminder that Plesioth is one of the largest monster in the series Plesioth: 32.47 m Cedeus: 58.37 m Ancient Serpent: 2×Plesioth = ~65 m
14:20 You giving out different names of the suborder gives me a couple names of my own. Shara could be classified as "Resonance Dragon". If I remember correctly, Shara was behind the singing from the beginning of Iceborne.
Interesting to know that Nargacuga and Barioth are more closely related to each other than they are to Tigrex! I always tought they were equally related.
I've always find those extinct monsters soo interesting and to finally to see them into the family tree is soo cool. I hope we can see more info about those guys in the future and additional members of other monster orders like the amphibians and the snake wyverns
Lol I just paused the video to text someone back, go back to thw video see the time and think "damn 30 minutes already?". As I resume the video Gaijin says "I hope you're still with me"
Awesome video, it's cool to see these translated properly, between this and Oceaniz's video we are eating good. That being said I noticed that you wrote "Daren" instead of "Dharen" and "Moran" instead of "Mohran" also for "Genposu" and "Iosu" I think given that you're translating this using English names they should instead be "Genprey" and "Ioprey" respectively
Regarding Velociprey and Giaprey being the same species, I remember from playing Freedom recently that Giaprey were originally just called "White Velociprey" early on. (Apparently that was also true in MHG.)
...10 legs...does that mean the crabs are supposed to have 10 legs but video-game wise they went with 6 because it would've been a nightmare to animate/program? xD
Basically every infraorder is represented by a single species; this has some disastrous implications for the ecological health of Monster Hunter as a setting. The Running Wyverns are the only group free of sin; and if they are any indication you should easily be able to lump a lot of other Monsters into the same superfamily lmao; or at least change the "superfamily" label for a less implicitly vast grouping
32:56 I'm curious if you could define how they're using "family" here and in other places? Is there an alternate translation? In traditional real world classifications, family would always come before genus, and no animal can be part of the same genus while also being in a different family.
How come nobody is freaking out at the fact that someone in the MonHun universe is named John Arthur? Jokes aside. Thank you for this amazing video Gaijin. Been your viewer since 2018
The fun thing is, back in MHFU/MHF2 one of the treasure items that you can find in the Treasure Hunting mini game of Treshi is the Elder Dragon research Book that was written by John Arthur himself. This is one of the reasons i frickin love the Treasure Hunting minigame back in 2nd gen. They even name dropped Mezaporta in that game
What makes me sad is that they don't really try to make biological connections between dragons and instead just create a new category for every one. For example Malzeno could have been a relative to Kushala, who lost their ability to control the wind, so they evolved a hardened tail and wings to defend themselves and adopted a distinct combat style. There is so much missed potential there.
So monsters are classified under things like bear, rabbit, dog, etc. Does that mean MH has these things? Are there actual bears and dogs and rabbits and cats and the like?
How are entire species referred to in Japan, including the Base Species and all subspecies/variants/rare species all at once? This is at least a problem in English as referring to the Base Species as the Base Species is easy but referring to the species as whole is always a little odd. Personally at least for the English names I think giving Base Species a subspecies adjective would be easy and additionally make the setting/world of Monster Hunter feel more developed.
The file on the link is a bit too low on resolution. I can barely make out some of the words. Translating it into a spread sheet could solve that issue.
