I test a standard golf grip thickness against a midsize grip thickness to see how thickness can affect golf ball flight and shot direction. The results are interesting and can make a huge difference to hitting more fairways and greens.

Changed to mcc+4 midsize last year since I'm getting older and I feel like I have to grip much harder to get contact on regular grips. I do love the +4 that are wider all the way. Makes it easier to grip down when needed.

I have small/medium sized hands but changed to midsize grips about 3 years ago. I find I don't grip the club as tight as I used to and therefore a more relaxed swing. My accuracy has improved quite significantly.

When I started playing 30+ years ago, I bought a used driver that had an over sized half cord Golf Pride Victory grip. My drives improved, but I was going through gloves like crazy and bandaids for my two fingers on my right hand. I quit playing due to life but am now returning to the game after many years. I’m on the fence about just re-gripping my old starter set or buying a new one. Your video has me wondering now about which grips to get for either set.

Just switched to jumbo golf pride grips this season, as well as an interlocked grip. The biggest thing I notice, especially with hitting on mats is how many more balls I can hit without fatigue. Would love to try some jumbo max grips.

You’ve got a stunning, super fluid driver swing bud. You can always tell when someone has a pro swing, it looks fluid, almost slow-like but the finish is balanced and the ball speed is 150 plus

I have just changed to midsized from standard after 20 odd years of playing and wish I'd of done it when I first started playing. I have a less draw flight movement which is my natural shape, no snap hooks which made me try the change, more feel in my short game and a more consistent shot length throughout the bag. My hands are 8 inches long and 9.5 inches in circumference 👍🏼 I have also upped the thickness of my putter too. That's improved slightly too.

Another factor in comfort is relief from hand pain. As an older golfer developing joint pain a larger, softer grip may help. I use both the CPX midsize and the Pure DTX midsize.

Longtime CP2 Jumbo w/3 wraps. Yes, I play w/o glove in large part due to unavailability of large enough glove. XXL is too small, I cannot bent fingers, especially thumb. I recently switched to that CPX, same Jumbo w/3 wraps. Fantastic grip, just slightly firmer than CP2 allowing better feel & feedback but the new texture maintains same level grip w/o increasing grip pressure.

A medium large cadet glove fits me perfectly I have a little arthritis being I am over 70 I find that the golf pride MCC align plus 4 a with three wraps is excellent that grip although not soft hangs on to your hand very well so that you do not need to use a lot of grip pressure although I need to be sure I get that phase squared otherwise the ball tends to leak right

Literally played my first round today w/an oversized grip on my driver. I'd started hitting the occasional SURPRISE!hook as I recently changing my AOA. Older golfers like me were taught to hit down but with 30 extra yards out there... Anyways, I laced it all day long with the miss being a 10 yard fade. Some say a bigger grip is a bandaid for a swing flaw. Those ppl can keep working on their swings while keep hitting bombs. 😂

Hey Michael. Grip thickness is huge. My hands measure on charts to need a standard grip or maybe a tad smaller. But,,,,,when I grip the club with midsize those two fingers that you want to be lightly touching your palm are doing just that. So the charts are actually wrong. Bet thats messed up many a golfer. The mid size is not only more comfortable but yield better results by far. Golfers are definitely not all the same :) . I put on the Golf Pride CP2 wrap grips in mid size. Love em. !!! They seem to help my hands turn over just the right amount perhaps. Sad thing is many golfers never think about grip size and the right size can definitely make you more consistent as it has with me. Best wishes from Manchester, Connecticut.

Eventually I will make it home and order my clubs. I tested them all, all the shafts, etc. For me, going with a mixred Srixon set with recoil 94g F3. Felt great everywhere. Last thing to decide is grip size. Always been standars, but always frlt it was a touch small, sometimes a space between palm and grip through the swing. My friend has some p790's (amazing) with midsize grips. Love the feel. I wear a large glove, I think I am going midsize. Can't wait. Just wanted some thoughts and this channel has an excellent viewership and that's to your credit.

Does the additional weight in the midsized grip effect the weight of the club??
I recently dropped from a 70g stiff to a 60g stiff to gain some swing speed and then put a midsized grip on the lighter shaft and in turn it actually felt heavier to swing than the 70g shaft!! 🤷🤷🤷

I have played with standard size with 1 full paper and a second paper on the bottoms hand for over 20 years. I have had 2 sets in the last 4 years with MCC 4+ and simply struggled and have moved back to my 20 years setup……I found it difficult to release properly with midsize. Clearly everyone is different just a matter of finding what works for the individual.

  • @seancook2264

Grip weight will also make a difference as heavier grip will effectively counterbalance the club…..I learn’t with a putter when changed the grip on my Del Mar from the Stock to the scotty pistol grip, the heavier grip trew out the balance of the putter; less feel in the head. Added some 20g weights and problem solved. Expect a thicker and heavier grip will have the same affect on ability to feel the club head.

I have large hands and have played with both midsize and standard in competition and have noticed that the standard grips provide much more workability and feel.. that being said a midsize can be effective for taking one side out of play by having less hand rotation and release.. Hi Skyler...I have larger hands (wear large size golf glove) and I am thinking about midsize grips but grew up with standard size club grips so that is what I am use to as far as feel. I found your comment interesting but not surprising about having more workability and feel with the standard size grip (I assume because you find it easier to release your hands through impact?) I have two questions for you when you get a second
      1. Have you tried two layers of tape on only the top half of your grip while keeping the lower half of your grip standard? If so what did you think of that?
      And
      2. To your knowledge is there a rule of thumb, specially if say one wears a large golf glove then midsize grips would technically be the proper fitting?
I’m a single digit handicap and I read most of the comments on here and it was obvious to me you know what you’re talking about so I thought I would reach out and ask for your thoughts. Thank you.

    • @skylerblair7468
      @skylerblair7468 11 місяців тому +1

@@jaydee5447 Hey there, yes you are correct. Smaller grip will make the club head release a little bit more easily. If your grips are the size of a telephone pole it is going to be much harder to rotate that club head compared to say a grip the size of a pencil.. if that makes any sense.
And to answer your questions, I have not tried to double wrap the butt of the club head but I have heard of people that do. I don’t tend to double wrap because it basically makes them just under a midsize grip diameter. And even though I can see the reasoning behind it, my thought on it is this… This game rewards consistency. If everything is uniform and consistent. I think the game will come easier. As you know it is a hard enough game as it is..
And for your second question, I don’t exactly know if there is a rule of thumb as far as what size hands belong with what grip diameter but what I do know is at the end of the day it is all about feel and what you are trying to accomplish. If midsize feels better to you, those are probably the ones for you BUT there are ups and downs to both sizes as far as preforming goes. The upside to midsize is that the ball will tend to go straighter. The upside to the standard grips are that they give you a little better feedback and workability with the ball left to right and right to left. I have large hands and was fit to midsize grips years ago but I had to kind of figure it out on my own with a lot of trial and error. Hope this saves you some time and some strokes!

Unless you have small hands, I really don't understand how for most men, Midsized is not the 'standard 'grip - it especially lets you get your lower right hand, so much more in contact with the grip for the application of power - you can see this in the long-drive world where absolutely no one uses a small grip. I made the switch to Align Plus Four Midsized grips a few years back, and it is one of, if not the best things I've ever done, that improved my golf game immediately.

Been using Golf Pride MCC+4 mid-size grips for a long time now and can't imagine going back to standard size grips ever.
May even choose to experiment with jumbo size grips at some point.
One key issue to bear in mind, however, is that different grips from different manufacturers will have different weights, which can affect your golf club's swing weight.
Dri-Tac grips tend to be much lighter in weight as compared to Golf Pride MCC+4 grips, so a 10-gram difference in weight can make your driver's club head feel much heavier (or lighter if you are going from Golf Pride to Dri-Tac), and that would also apply to any club head in your bag.
Swing weights are extremely important to notice and nail down in terms of what works best for you.

This is another area overlooked in custom fitting. Every time I go and get fitted I’m always given grips too small so how do I know if the fitting is right if the grip makes that much difference in dispersion. It’s always something you get asked at the end but clearly it matters. Another reason I always struggle getting genuinely fitted correctly.

15-20$ spending for a massive improvement - no brainer to try! Moved from standard size grip to Midsize and heavier shaft in my 3w, huge gains.

Since you play Mid you should have tried a jumbo too in this test

I have midsize on my driver, woods, and wedges. My irons have standard size. I just hit them straighter. 🤷

I tried midsized grips for a month or so, but ended up going back to standard. I didn't notice any difference in in my shots, I just prefer the feel of the standard size.

In my experience handsy players like a smaller grip.

Why wouldn’t you use the same kind of grip?

It would have been a truer comparison to use the same grip style in different sizes.

Thought too small a grip miss will be predominantly left too much hand action , too large a miss right, you had miss right and left with standard grip ??

Am I the only one here to actually play better with a smaller grip, the larger grip feels like I am holding a cricket bat, a smaller grip for me let's me feel where the head of the club is in the swing allowing me to shape the shot

You probably dropped 2 swing weight points with the midsize grip.

On a medical point of view anyone with O/A or sore hands from work seems to benefit from thicker grips

You needed to go right size grip for you vs larger grip size. Not a grip that is too small for your hands. No one would ever test that.

For this test to be more valid and realistic you should have also used a larger grip (because you already play a mid-size) along with the smaller grip. That way the results would show if you played a larger grip how it would impact your game vs what you are already comfortable playing. Basically watching this episode was a waste of time....sorry.

Would have been a much fairer test using the exact same head and shaft tbh as there is always manufacturing tolerances, so no 2 drivers will give you the exact same outcome............doing a video testing this would be good?? Using 2 drivers that should be identical and seeing the difference

Must be nice to be tall and barely have to put any effort into your swing.
