Andrew: my fav part of Watchfinder was your very intelligent commentary presented with appropriate levels of levity and gravity. This video has those same attributes, but in a whole new arena. More? Yes please.
I would like to see your engineering background come into play in future videos. It is such an under appreciated part of watches and our world generally.
One last point: I remember you talking about the discrimination young Gerald Genta experienced as an Italian immigrant in Switzerland. Combined with the discussion of a woman’s right to vote, I’m a bit shocked to say the least. I’m American, so I thought we were uniquely qualified to maintain the worst traditions of treating others poorly. Appears the Swiss are giving us a run for the money.

I agree… if I could name a voice for a upcoming Pixar movie… AM’s might rise to the top (after Tom Hanks or Brad Pitt of course) 🤩. Make the film about about how ironic corporate “disobedience ” saved the El Primero and that would be a bonus! At least 100 of us nerds would go see it… maybe twice. 😅

Hi Andrew, I find your attention to detail fascinating. I have lived in Lausanne as a researcher in Physics for some years and my family now is part Swiss. I always liked watches and initially going to Switzerland I was happy that I would go to the country that I thought people would be happy to talk about watches. That was back in 2003, I was surprised to see that actually Swiss never bought anything else except swatch, tissot and certina if they really wanted to splash their money around. You see I learned that Swiss, at least the old generation, are very wealthy but they think it is offensive to show their wealth. So, I found out that Rolex was universally despised as a watch that was made to be sold to rich vain tourists and mainly foreign residents, because no rich Swiss in his right mind would flash something so tacky as a Rolex. Especially in Geneva, such a conservative city, the presence of all these luxurious offerings clashes with the mindset of traditional Swiss. Saying all that, this is changing, the young generation feel that they can show off more their expensive watches and as Rolex and other companies invest in Switzerland's universities and to the world famous EPFL and ETH they get some respect, Swiss love micro-engineering.

As a Swiss I must say I find it interesting that you chose to focus on the (agreed) lateness with regards to women's voting rights but have not highlighted the fact that we are the only country on earth with a true direct democracy where people can veto any law and propose any law. The people have more power than the government. This is also part of the reason why no extreme party has ever been able to take over the country - because the Swiss citizen has never been left feeling like they have nothing to say and in need of protesting by voting for extreme political forces when they have the rare chance of being able to vote. We vote dozens of times a year. There is a sense of "we are the government and it is our household". Hence, political sense of responsibility is very much part of our culture. There is no “they just do what they want anyway”. It is truly a place governed by the people. That is absolutely unique and quite amazing.
By the way: literally every country on earth, even Great Britain, has rules regarding names that can be given to a child - and names need actually to be approved by the registering officer. You can't give your kid just any name - only the USA has practically carte blanche. Germany, for example, is way more restrictive with regards to names than Switzerland. Just google "illegal names in [whatever country]".

Nice video as usual. Thank you for that. I enjoyed it in particular as I live in Northern Italy, a few kilometres from the border with Switzerland and I am familiar with that country, generally speaking. Now sorry for being pedantic but I think stating at 3:55 that the “LHC wiring is long enough to cover 6 times the distance from earth to the sun” makes me really scratch my head. Ditto distance in astronomy is called AU (Astronomical Unit) and equals to approx. 150 Million km. Six times that is 900 M km. Considering for simplicity a total length of the 30 km for the LHC that turns into 30’000 km of cabling for each single meter of tunnel. EACH SINGLE METER. I find that really hard to believe as it seems physically impossible. Where did you get that information?

1:17 Associating accurate timekeeping with Swiss watchmaking is the summit of nonsense of Swiss watch snobbery since the very defining characteristic of Swiss watchmaking industry is being AGAINST keeping accurate time by focusing on medieval technology of mechanical and automatic watchmaking - which, in terms of everyday accuracy (let alone scientific accuracy), cannot hold a candle to regular quartz, let alone HAQ or Radio Controlled quartz watches. If science relied on Swiss watchmaking, we would be still be living without Internet, practical physics or space flight and all the things they enabled.
