super interesting. I had a tagged one last summer and got some interesting info. It was 33 inches. "This trout was originally seen by us on October 18, 1993, off Michigan Island, and measured in at 25.7 inches. It was captured at a spawning reef located 1/8 of a mile southeast of Michigan Island and was a female in spawning condition at that time. It was then recaptured on October 28, 2018, at Gull Island Shoal (located 3 ½ miles northeast of Gull Island), and had grown to 30.6 inches. This lake trout was of native origin and approximately 37 years old when you caught and released it."

Superior Angling should now be known as "Superior Angling Knowledge" because this was super informative. Let me ask folks this. How many fishing shows would take a freakish trophy fish death and turn it into a knowledge gain for the DNR and then let the angling world tag along? On second thought, just call yourself "World Class Angling on Lake Superior"!
    Excellent job, AGAIN!

Grant, this video is fantastic! Even though we see how carefully you handle fish in the videos you share, it was great of you to explain the care and effort you took for this old laker. Nice work! The heart virus thing was new to me. Thanks so much for going the extra mile.

March 2023 I caught a 42 inch lake trout and it was 38 lbs. I won’t tell you where it was caught but i will tell you I have an old school mate that does this type of studies in Alberta Canada. He tested the fish and determined it was 31 to 36 years old. This coincides with the test you have provided in this video. I also know that farmed or hatchery fish or offspring of hatchery fish have substantial higher risk of cardio vascular issues including heart growths! The irony here is I’m actually in my fishing hut right now at the same Alberta lake waiting on a big laker as I type this message! For real!

Awesome video. Like you said, there is a lot of variability in lake trout age. The new Utah state record down here was 50 founds and only 16 years old. Fish up there are going to be much much older.

Very interesting grant. Great video! Big fish are old fish in that lake. Caught walleyes in Superior with tags in them that were estimated 20-25 yrs old.
