Pink Martini's performance of the heartbreaking Romanian song "Până când nu te iubeam", originally made famous by the great Maria Tănase, was first recorded by Pink Martini on the album "Splendor in the Grass" with lead singer Storm Large. In recent years, though regular guest singer Edna Vazquez has also learned the song and sings it frequently on tour, including at this performance, filmed at Pink Martini's December 2021 residency at SFJAZZ in San Francisco, and broadcast on OurConcerts.live as a virtual concert in late December. What other band but Pink Martini would have two singers who could perform this challenging song in Romanian? This performance also features violinist Nick Crosa, Dan Faehnle on guitar, and bandleader and pianist Thomas Lauderdale.

This song has a special place in my heart, it’s what started it all. During’20 lockdown I stumbled across Storm singing this song and I was immediately captivated. And thus, the Pink Martini adventure began. I’ve been discovering the this amazing extended family ever since!! Edna’s singing of this song is yet another beautiful chapter in this exquisite coffee table book (hint, hint) that is Pink Martini. Thank you thank you!!

I don't want to denigrate the level, the quality of the performance of this song by Large Storm, or Edna - I like both performers and their versions; however, the original is by Maria Tănase and remains unmatched as a performer of this masterpiece ... especially since the Romanian language is, however, her mother tongue.

Nobody can even come close to the majestic Maria Tanase, but I admire Pink Martini for making her music known to the world. Edna does a very good job, just like Storm, but only a romanian soul can sing this as it should be, that's because it's in our blood. A few years ago Loredana was invited by Pink Martini to sing it in their Bucharest concert, and it was spot on. No surprise there, since Loredana is fantastic singer and a massive Maria Tanase fan.
