  • Cubism Flowers Inspired by Georges Braque
    LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Students will be able to create a cubism flower artwork using crayons and markers, demonstrating an understanding of the cubism art style.
    ASSESSMENTS:
Students will present their cubism flower artwork to the class, explaining how they incorporated cubism elements and techniques.
    KEY POINTS:
Cubism: An art movement that breaks objects into geometric shapes and reassembles them in abstract forms.
Georges Braque: A French painter who, along with Pablo Picasso, developed the cubism movement.
Color and Shape: Understanding how different colors and shapes can create depth and perspective in artwork.
Art Techniques: Use of crayons and markers to create texture and contrast in the artwork.
    OPENING:
Begin with a brief discussion about cubism and show examples of Georges Braque's work.
Ask students: "What do you think happens to flowers if we look at them from different angles?"
Engage students by having them describe shapes they see in their classroom.
    INTRODUCTION TO NEW MATERIAL:
Present a step-by-step video demonstrating how to create cubism flowers, highlighting key techniques used by Braque.
Discuss the importance of geometric shapes and how they can represent flowers.
Anticipate the misconception that students may think cubism is just randomly placing shapes; clarify that it involves thoughtful arrangement.
    GUIDED PRACTICE:
Set expectations for behavior: respect materials and each other's ideas.
Provide examples of simple flower shapes and guide students to sketch their ideas.
Ask questions ranging from identifying shapes in their sketches to discussing color choices and how they represent depth.
Monitor student performance by circulating the room and providing feedback.
    INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Students will create their own cubism flower artwork using crayons and markers.
Set expectations: focus on using geometric shapes and a variety of colors.
Students should work independently but can ask for help if needed.
    CLOSING:
Have students share their artwork with a partner and discuss the shapes and colors they used.
Ask students to reflect on what they learned about cubism and how it can change the way we see flowers.
    EXTENSION ACTIVITY:
For students who finish early, provide additional materials to create a cubist background for their flowers or encourage them to explore other objects in cubism style.
    HOMEWORK:
Ask students to find a flower at home or in their neighborhood and sketch it from at least three different angles to prepare for the next class.
    STANDARDS ALIGNED:
This lesson aligns with the Tennessee Art K-12 Standards, particularly focusing on the creation of art that demonstrates knowledge of various art forms and styles, and the use of color and shape in composition.
