To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Strobe. The sound design is ingenious, and without a solid grasp of electronic dance music theory most of the subleties will go over a typical listener's head. There's also the chiptune-esque main theme, which is deftly woven into the climax of the track - Joel’s inspiration draws heavily from video game culture, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the track, to realize that it's not just good music- it says something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Strobe truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the ingeniousness of the long, dreamy intro which itself is a cryptic reference to the trancelike state people were in when electronic music first hit the scene. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Joel Zimmerman‘s genius unfolds itself on their headphones. What fools... how I pity them. :joy: And yes by the way, I DO have a deadmau5 tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Yo I aint gonna lie, I was a little upset by how this video portrayed Deadmau5 fans and was gonna voice that, but then figured nah not even worth it and went off to listen to Strobe because I do love it. Then out of curiosity I scrolled through the comments section. And dear lord this video is so god damn accurate apparently. D=

Strobe is one of his best songs if not the best and I've first listened to it like 10 years ago when i was 8 riding my bmx and it made me appriciate what you can do with electronic music.. For someone who doesen't really care about music its just another EDM banger but its way more than that. Its unique sound and how it all flows together just can't be reproduced.. unless you're copying it, and thats what i love about joels music. I listened to skrillex a lot at that time as well and i liked his music but on the other hand Deadmau5's music had way more emotions especially Strobe and that made me start to fall in love with emotional music witch is way more complicated and harder to execute in my opinion. ( I actually had a canche to talk to Joel and i asked him what was the song that he put to most emotion into.. and I kinda already knew what he was going to say, but he sayed that to him music is math and that he doesen't put/feel any emotions towards music witch is weird because i feel really emotionally connected to his music. But I still think he made it very beautiful and emotional even tho he just looks at it as math)

Its hard to bring new listeners in for me since most songs, in general, are like 4 mins. And even if they are on the longer side its 6 mins. But Deadmau5 makes 9 min average pieces. Only music types I can think of that long are classical music. And the layering of his music is a unique and beautiful thing.
Idk, maybe he got his musical layering from classical music. You know how they call it "movements" to describe each part. Especially if it was like a play/opera. Think La Habarana/Torreador, or Barber of Seville.
Idk I'm probably overthinking it. Tbh, I just enjoy the vibes and mood. I'd rather disect other musicians than Daudmau5.
Its just due to me enjoying his music more than wanting to look for specific elements like I'm in an art appreciation course or musical theory class.
The minor 3rd, major 3rd, tritone, and other musical analytical terms.
(But if you love video game music, check out 8-bit music theory, I just dont want to do that type of analytics to Deadmau5. I love his stuff and thats it.)

What strikes me about Deadmau5’s Strobe (2009) is how simple it is, yet how full it feels. The first few minutes are a plain synth melody repeated over and over, and the drums don’t even come in until four minutes into the song. By the 5:30 mark, the drums have already been removed again, and the synths start building up once more. It’s a jungle of teases-Deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman) introduces one element for a minute, and just when you’re comfortable and used to it, he takes it away and fades it into something you swear you’ve heard before, but haven’t.
The genius of Strobe lies in its beautiful simplicity. At its core, it’s made up of three different, but related synth melodies, and a simple house drum track. It doesn’t rely on any fancy glitch sequences or big surprises to make it interesting; Joel is confident in its soft saw arpeggios and windy pads. I don’t mean to knock glitches-I personally love them-but it amazes me how Strobe manages to keep me engaged with mostly simple melodic shifts. Even when the song is one measure of one instrument looped for a minute, the combination of a catchy, earworm melody and talented sound design keeps the listener hooked and their ears filled. A single sound fills up everything from deep bass to tingling highs, making the song feel rich and lush, despite a lack of melodic or rhythmic complexity.
The use of carefully-designed envelopes makes the synths feel smooth, and low-pass filters allow the same sounds to be soft in one part, and hard and driving in another. In addition, when he decides to change it up, Deadmau5 does an incredible job of making transitions and fades feel natural and smooth to the point where you don’t even realize you’re hearing a different melody until it changes once again. A lot of thought surely went into making all the different melodies mesh together in such a way that it seems almost like the same melody slowly changing, rather than a new one being introduced every so often. This synchronicity makes Strobe feel incredibly cohesive-it really feels like one long song, despite having different melodies throughout. Yet while the song is built on staying melodically one step ahead of the listener, Joel manages to keep it soothing, even meditative. Its long drawn-out noise and rice shaker fades are calming, even at its climax with a full drum track and multiple layered synths. The subtle use of pads in the background creates a warm, soft environment that aurally surrounds the listener through immense frequency range and offers an established sonic location for the melody to emanate from.
In Joel’s performances, he exaggerates the shifts from soothing to exciting very tactfully. When I saw him perform in March, he made Strobe feel like a journey by making the intro and outro even more minimal at times than the record, and added some more biting and slightly glitchy variations to the climax. By the time he faded into the next track, I felt like I had been transported to another, mau5ier world and back, all in the span of about six minutes. At no point did I feel jarred, even though he transitioned from some of the most minimal sounds of the night to the most energetic.
So, I believe Strobe is a work of art as much as any Monet or Picasso. Like any good painting, Strobe showcases a sample of another world to the audience and leaves them craving more. For this reason, I can (and often do) listen to it multiple times over in one sitting, because I feel like my appetite for the world Deadmau5 has introduced me to can never be sated. Out of all the songs I chose for my playlist, Strobe is far and away the one that never ages, never gets tired. Although I often dismay at our current radio culture of playing a certain song over and over until everyone hates it three months after its release, Strobe will never suffer this affliction for me. While I do enjoy many songs because they satisfy me, Strobe is special because it doesn’t, and that is why I would choose to bring it to Mars with me above millions of other great tracks. Also, because it’s damn catchy.

At one of his first events, a set at Masquerade in Atlanta, Deadmau5 straight up sucked as a dj. And his sound was horrible. At the time this made no sense to me because his productions were so good. But I stuck by him as he grew into the role. I'm glad I didn't let that initial set turn me away. He's become one of the most impassioned and honest artists out there. And his music, while not as thematic as the early days, has continued to amaze me.

*Strobe is my favourite modern piece of music and if you disagree or do not like it that is just fine with me.*
    Joel is a great composer.
Strobe is a fantastic piece of music that will stand the test of time.. it has a great dramaturgy... a timeless flow.. the orchestral version of it is beautiful. You can adapt Strobe on any type of instrument... the fact that he wanted to scrap the piece still boggles my mind... it's as if he doesn't like the good music he creates.. like.. he's a typical EDM fan who is able to create fantastic music that he actually doesn't like..
Still there is lots of crazy hype and all the stuff people usually do.. the concert he did with the classical orchestra.. oh my god.. the behaviour of those fans.. uncultured.. american..
But whatever.. there will always be pieces that are special.. but in the end different types of people develop different types of taste..

Deadmau5's track "Strobe" is often considered "intellectual" by fans and critics alike for a few reasons that go beyond its immediate auditory experience. Released in 2009 as part of the album "For Lack of a Better Name," "Strobe" has since become one of Deadmau5's most iconic tracks, celebrated for its complexity, emotional depth, and production mastery. Here's why "Strobe" might be perceived as intellectual:
    1. Musical Structure and Complexity: "Strobe" is known for its progressive structure, building gradually over its 10-minute duration. It starts with a simple, melancholic piano melody and evolves layer by layer, adding synths, basslines, and intricate rhythms. This gradual buildup and release mimic classical music structures, showcasing a high level of musical craftsmanship and intellectual depth in electronic music production.
    2. Emotional Depth: The track is renowned for its emotional resonance, capturing a sense of nostalgia, longing, and euphoria. The ability to evoke such strong emotions through instrumental electronic music speaks to Deadmau5's skill as a producer and composer, suggesting a deep, intellectual understanding of how music affects the human psyche.
    3. Innovation in Electronic Music: At the time of its release, "Strobe" was a testament to innovation within electronic music, pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved within the genre. Deadmau5's meticulous attention to sound design, synthesis, and production techniques has inspired countless producers and musicians, demonstrating a profound understanding and intellectual approach to music-making.
    4. Cultural Impact: Beyond its technical and emotional appeal, "Strobe" has had a significant impact on electronic music culture. It's become an anthem within the EDM community, celebrated at festivals, clubs, and events worldwide. Its enduring popularity reflects an intellectual curiosity among listeners who appreciate the depth and complexity of electronic music beyond the mainstream.
    5. Timelessness: The lasting appeal of "Strobe" also contributes to its intellectual aura. In a genre often criticized for being ephemeral or trend-driven, "Strobe" stands out as a timeless piece that continues to be relevant and influential years after its release. This longevity is a testament to Deadmau5's thoughtful and deliberate approach to music production.
In essence, "Strobe" is considered intellectual because it transcends the typical boundaries of electronic dance music, offering a complex, emotionally rich, and innovative auditory experience that engages listeners on multiple levels.

As a deadmau5 fan watching this video,
1: Strobe is a good song. Not because of sound design or whatever but because it is at least an attempt to create something original in a market of unoriginal producers. Gives me some hope for humanity.
2: There is a climax, it's just longer than the 15 second farts that most pop producers would make and has a more gradual build up/drop.
3: The reason people don't like Marshmello isn't because of the striking similarities between the helmets, or the fact that he makes "pop" music, but the fact that he not only harassed deadmau5 on twitter for publicity, but he also spends millions of dollars just to promote his brand on popular media. He's practically the antithesis of deadmau5 in every way.
    4: I don't use reddit.
    5: I don't vape.
6: I don't care what kind of music you listen to, it's none of my business.

This is relatable, I do find Strobe to be an EDM masterpiece along with the other stuff said.
If you thought that wasn’t enough intellectual chit chat though, look at prog rock (Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Jeff Wayne, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Transatlantic, etc) prog metal (Dream Theater, Haken, Seventh Wonder, Ayreon, etc) and opera (Richard Wagner, Modest Mussorgsky, etc) those communities are on a whole ‘nother level, lol, EDM has a lot work work to do if it ever wants to reach the magnitude of Atom Heart Mother, Echoes, Dogs, Metropolis, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Octavarium, Visions, Close to the Edge, 2112, Cygnus X-1, Karn Evil 9, The Whirlwind, the Ayreon timeline, the entirety of The War of the Worlds, or the grand daddy of them all, the entirety of Der Ring des Nibelungen, just to name a few.

I'll overANALyze other musicians who actually do score music. Like video game musicians or Movie score musicians cuz their music determines the mood of visual media. But Deadmau5 still evokes great emotion I just try not to think to hard about scenery but just the vibes and mode it puts me in.
Its just beautiful chillaxing vibes tbh.
Sorry I'm not as articulant as other comments. But in short, deadmau5 go brrrrrr.
(Dang it I still text walled. Plz forgive me komenasai)
