Trainspotting in Northeast Thailand

  • My most recent trainspotting trip led me to Northeast Thailand, or Isan, primarily because I wanted to see and ride the old RHN Hitachi railcars, which aren't easy to spot in other parts of Thailand.
My initial plan was to start in Khon Kaen, but the newly constructed concrete viaduct spanning the entire city, along with the skytrain-like station, led me to move further north to Nam Phong, which still retains the vintage charm of rural Thailand.
I understand that the new infrastructure is the future for the country, means higher safety and less delays, but I would really prefer if it could be done in a way that is more sensitive to the scenery. It's hard to shake the feeling that Thailand will lose much of its original railroading charm once all the concrete is in place.
Anyway, once in Nam Phong, I caught a few trains that passed by-one of them being Express 76, which roughly two hours later collided with a car at a level crossing near Nong Chim Station-and eventually boarded the RHN bound for Udon Thani, where my trip ended.
I can't wait to return to Isan, perhaps for a cross-border trip to Laos next time.

At 2:20 this is a private freight train owned by a huge cement Company. They run 20 of these crrc locos and also have at least 6 own shuntimg locos
