Love Taveuni. Left Fiji 40 years ago to settle in NZ. Although I love New Zealand Fiji holds a very special place in my heart. Last went to Taveuni in the mid 70's and found it such a friendly place. Thank you so much for posting this.
That airport looks the same ... decades ago ... brings back memories ... I love Taveuni ... it's truly a garden island ... Thanks for sharing ... nice clip. :)
Totally! I was there 20 years ago and thinking the building needs a paint job since then. Back then I also recall the canteen was a police station outpost.
Proud of Dehavilland twin otter. I worked to build this in downsview plant 2 late 1980s. Dash 8 100 200 300 and q400 in plant 1. Great turbo prop aircraft to see it fly back home in fiji.. Still working now in Global express jet. Proud of Bombardier to keep aerospace domination in Canada. Will visit fiji after pandemic. Bula to all in fiji.
@@NowGetThere Thanks, enjoyed to see it build from scratch that time. Now all major structures are sub contract outside Canada and final assembly line of marry up of structures are being done in Canada. This is with Bombardier global express and dash 8 that go sold to viking dehavilland in 2019
You really took me on that flight..I was using my headphone for the audio. I am not lying, but the sudden change in the engine sounds, gave me a feeling of even my ears getting closed out of pressure difference that we feel while flying especially when seated near to the engines...I even felt the jerk while the plane touched down. It was a 3D feeling. Thank you so much.
Great high definition video! Last time I was there was 20 years ago and think the paint on the terminal building looks the same. I recall 1/2 the runway was chewed up and gravel...so that's updated.
What a wonderful trip report! Lately I tried flying DHC6 in Malaysia on short distance routes, I found their engine sound is not a joke but the good thing is we can look at the cockpit crew flying and landing the plane. Nice trip report! I wish I can fly with Fiji Airways in the near future :)
The de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter was one of the first short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) aircraft. It's great that Viking Air in Victoria, B.C. is keeping it alive.
John Eddy Thanks for acknowledging Viking Air. I worked on that airplane(sn956) in completion stage. Also it is awesome to see the airplane that I worked on youtube!
Beautiful journey. We do have the same aircraft in Sarawak and Sabah(Borneo), Malaysia. Used for Rural Air Service to transport passengers from rural areas to the cities. It’s a very durable aircraft and I love it.
Such a lovely aircraft. Used to jump these in Southern California. So agile. No fancy glass cockpit (or seats or doors) but it could return to the airport and land before the jumpers reached the ground.
Aircraft is DQ-FJS, a Viking DHC 6 400 series Twin Otter. It was delivered to Fiji new from the factory in Canada (a 40-hr flight) in October 2017. Fiji Link is the domestic/regional subsidiary of Fiji Airways. Taveuni Island is one of Fiji's islands and often referred to as the Garden Isle due the abundant flora.
Really good video! Thanks! Makes me want to leave the SF Bay Area and go there, the clouds don't bother me. Nice plane too. Smallest I have been in is a Saab 340.
Very nice! Thanks for uploading. The model in my profile pic, serial #728 provided the air link to my island back in the 80s and is the only one I know with an external cargo pod. Still flying somewhere in South Africa I think.
lovely to hear the propeller than jet machine...its really...ummm...touch the heart..this is a plane..really plane..actualy plane...hehehe...Remind me when i was young and live in small island at Mollucas, Indonesia...thx to share ur journey... :)
The Mollucas Islands are the place of origin of Nutmeg, also known as the Spice Islands. Nutmeg was once more valuable than gold because it was only available from one location in the world. Nutmeg is what Columbus was in search of when he left Spain heading West. Until the mid-19th century, the small island group of the Banda Islands, which are also known under the name "Spice Islands," was the only location of the production of nutmeg and mace in the world. The Banda Islands are situated in the eastern part of Indonesia, in the province of Maluku. They consist of eleven small volcanic islands, called Neira, Gunung Api, Banda Besar, Rhun, Ai, Hatta, Syahrir, Karaka, Manukan, Nailaka and Batu Kapal, with a total approximate land area of 8,150 hectares.[17] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutmeg en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maluku_Islands The Spice Trade: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spice_trade

Fiji Link is the domestic and regional arm of Fiji Airways. Fiji Link has 3 new Twin Otters (DHC 6 -400) like these ones and another 3 older versions (DHC 6-300), 2 ATR72-600 and 1 ATR42-600. Fiji Airways as of Aug 2019 has 1 x Airbus A330-300, 5 x Airbus A330-200, 2 x Boeing 737 Max 8s, 1 x B737-700 and 4 x B737-800. Two brand new Airbus A350-900s are on order and due to be delivered in November - December 2019.
Watch some videos of flights in to the Caribbean island of Saba or Lukla in the Himalayas and you'll see mostly DHC-6 Twin Otters. This is all you need to know about what airlines think of this airplanes safety record. But to explain further the Twin Otter has a very good safety record considering where it is used. It is the product of generations of aircraft meant to be used to open up Canada's vast northern wilderness. Pilots would often be on there own an entire day's flight from any help so the planes needed to be rugged and able to land and take off on very short runways. DHC-1 through DHC-3 were the first Canadian built "bush" planes. The DHC-6 added a second engine for safety and increased load. All are STOL (Short Take-0ff and Landing) designs. So they are very maneuverable and very can stay flying at lower speeds. Fuji Air's Twin Otters are all the 400 Series. Which means they are the newest built. Some Twin Otters are over 50 years old. But the 400 Series have modern computer avionics, some carbon-fiber components and only entered production in 2010. So if you get to fly in one you can feel very safe.
