    As a quilted fabric basket maker, I’m no stranger to boxed bottoms, but the gardener in me is very grateful for those gallon multiples! Thank you! I’ll be making a bunch of these! I will be adding handles to mine for easy moving. Keep sewing and growing; I will be watching! Again, thank you! I needed this!

      @@ClosingtheGapSISLMS decide how wide you want the handle. 1 inch is good. Decide how long you want your handle. Let’s say 12 inches. Cut fabric 12 inches long by 4 inches wide. Fold in half lengthwise, press. Unfold. Fold each long edge to meet at the pressed crease. Fold again so the folded edges meet. Edge stitch. Pin strap to bag, centering handle. To attach, sew a square at the bottom of the strap, then sew an x inside the square,

    Thanks for taking the time to make and post this video. This is a complicated subject to try to explain because so much of it is visual (a picture is worth a thousand words). One thing I find a bit difficult is that in the making video, you hemmed one long edge and then sewed two edges to make a large pocket which you then squared off. In this video, the bag construction is done by hemming two short sides and then sewing two long edges; different assembly methods. The use of two different assembly methods might change how the dimensions are calculated (I don't know). On the topic of sizing, one thing which might help in knowing which dimensions give which size in gallons is that a gallon is 231 cubic inches. So, if you wanted a pot which would hold 5 gallons and you knew you needed it to be 8 inches tall: 5 x 231 = 1,155 cu. in. (total cubic inches needed in the pot). Divide that by 8 inches (height) = 144.375 *square* inches needed in each vertical inch. Knowing that pi * R^2 = sq. in. of a cylinder (these are roughly cylindrical, close enough for gardening), divide the 144.375 by pi = 45.96 inches which represents R^2. Take the square root of that to get the *radius* (R) of the bag = 6.78". Multiply x 2 to get the diameter you'd need = 13.56". Drawing those steps out neatly on paper should help to clarify how it works together. With this, you can easily hit a target volume while adhering to whatever height or width requirements you might have. Since I find this kind of math to be fun: if you knew you wanted a container which had a certain diameter and height and then wanted to calculate the size in gallons then it's (pi * R^2 * height) / 231. That assumes all dimensions are in inches.

    I had never even heard of grow bags until this spring I was at Menards and they had burlap grow bags for $2 each and I bought 4 of them. Apparently, everyone else had heard of them. I was so excited about them, and when I told people about them, they were like, yeah, I've used them for years. Anyway, this video is great because now I can make them in any size I want. I am not locked into 10-inch square ones. Also, I saw some at Natural Grocers and they were right around $16 on clearance! Thank you!

    So I based my sewing on the original video where you sewed a seam down one side and across the bottom of your gallon bag. This method of sewing does not work based on your calculation for sizing your other bags. And now when I look at this video , I see you have made 2 side seams and it is solid fabric across the bottom. Needless to say the bags did not turn out properly.

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, as I said in the video, you have to sew 2 side seams on the larger bags.

  • @psylence101
    @psylence101 4 роки тому +1

     Grow Your Heirlooms Hi, unfortunately the link doesn't mention the corner length and also doing it according to the method you showed on the first video the values are flipped, the height becomes the width instead of the length and the diameter becomes the length. It can be done but the method becomes different with either flipping the values or sewing two seams instead of doing the pivot thing. I am litterally doing it right now with the sewing machine in front of me.

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  4 роки тому +2

      It helps to know which bag you are doing. I mentioned that in the video. The large bags are flipped. You sew the hem on the short side of the larger bags. The smaller bags get sewn down the long side

    being math illiterate lol, I can't understand how to figure dimension for tree seedling bags I would like to make ! and I couldn't find on your website. I need probably at least 14" high by 12" wide. To accommodate root growth. I was using 4"x14" plastic sleeves I bought in a pinch. Because I need thousands. The bags I'm using don't stand on their own or allow good air circulation. 6" wide would probably work too. When I dig them VS plant seeds / acorns they are usually 3-12" high with roots ranging from 3-12". I will also need to make some taller for when I dig bigger trees from my native grown tree / wild plant farm. Could you post how to calculate the dimensions please?

    • @RachellesGardenDiary

      For 14" high by 12" wide pots you need to cut your fabric into 41" long by 25" wide pieces.
      For 14" high by 6" wide pots you need 41" long by 13" fabric pieces.
      His website posted in the video description has the formula.
