- Indigenous academic Leroy Little Bear compares the foundational base of Blackfoot knowledge to quantum physics to an attentive audience at The Banff Centre as part of the Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science: Contrasts and Similarities event.
Leroy Little Bear is a member of the Blood Tribe of the Blackfoot Confederacy. He has served as a legal and constitutional advisor to the Assembly of First Nations and has served on many influential committees, commissions, and boards dealing with First Nations issues. He is a faculty member of Indigenous Leadership and Management at The Banff Centre.
Little Bear has written several articles and co-edited three books including Pathways to Self-Determination: Canadian Indians and the Canadian State (1984), Quest for Justice: Aboriginal Peoples and Aboriginal Rights (1985), and Governments in Conflict and Indian Nations in Canada (1988). Little Bear is also contributor to Reclaiming Indigenous Voice and Vision (UBC Press, 2000). He has maintained a lifelong professional interest in the philosophy of science, especially theoretical physics, from a First Nations perspective.
There is nothing new under the sun. Thank you Dr. Leroy. As a indigenous person myself from across the world in the North east of India.We come from a similar spectrum of thinking ways. Initially it was metaphysics, now quantum physics. Western knowledge systems should understand that no matter what name you give it, the 'process' as you say it prevails.

Metaphysics Change because Physics changed. Physics shouldn’t change based on what Metaphysics find convenience.
Quantum Physics is not metaphysics. What does quantum physics imply about the nature of our existence is metaphysics. The latter is significantly more subjective.

@@tylerbranston6383 initially metaphysics was all we had, that's a bit like saying religion came before science therefore religion should take precedence in it's claims about how the world is. Non-sense really.
@@DarthAlphaTheGreat or, instead of atomizing this dilemma and compartmentalizing metaphysics and physics, we could approach this from Dr. Little Bear's perspective and find a symbiotic, cyclical relationship between metaphysics and physics. Does metaphysics not provide deep, philosophical questions that guide physics, and does physics not use these questions to explore the nature of our reality, thus presenting metaphysical philosophers with more questions? You're right in saying "Physics shouldn't change based on what Metaphysics find [convenient]" but it will change based on the questions posed by metaphysics about scientific discoveries.
Thank you so much this is an amazing talk that more People outside of the 1st nations need to hear and understand that civilized world is not all of humanity and far from the best possibly the worst of it

When Dr. Little Bear says "small measurement' it's also called "weak measurement."
Underrated comment. Thank you, I say, as one who may wish to engage what is said in this video for further research. Search terms are known to have variants in many if not all fields (it seems ubiquitous). It's certainly helpful to be as well-equipped as possible.
His is one of the best talks I've heard in decades.

I am both indigenous to this side of what is called north America, Canada & tribal African & Aniu.
From the conversations I've had with "experts in Science" is their real disjointed relationship to everything.
Our current climate crisis is a direct result of linear, not causal thought.
There is quite a bit of the old theory of the "subpar thought" of Indigenous or tribal thought.
More likely, you have a defensive, negative mindset towards western culture that animates your ideas and understandings of what science even is. After all, you've made a point of declaring your identity, so obviously you have a lot invested in the ideas and fantasies that surround the "tribal thought" you have declared your fidelity too. This kind of bias distorts your thinking.

There is no technology without science but there is science without technology. Einstein's work shows gravity is not a force, it is matter following the geometry of space. Like so much of what you do, this is my least favorite talk from you. Math was fundamental to Einstien not secondary, was the one subjects his entire life he aced, language was what he struggled with. This does not change Indigenous culture/science has true value and produces facts on par with Western Science. I am just passionate about physics and don't think you mean to misinform but unfortunately have on a couple points.

I agree with some points and disagree with others. I think science absolutely needs lots of perspectives and ways of understanding it, but to say that scientists haven't found anti particles for known particles yet because they don't deal with the notion of spirit kind of doesn't make any sense. If anyone knows how that makes sense please let me know because I am a little confused. Is it a metaphorical spirit or a literal one, because if it is a literal one, spirits aren't real and have little to no place in scientific discussion.
I believe western science refers too this as "dark matter", which might be termed a spirital realm.

We need to use science applications in the form of nano bio bots in this scientists (context: divulging into the unknown as he said) brain... and keep it alive..... so he can continue his philosophic observational explorations into the unknowns.
There is not more than one science. Science is a methodology snf not a fixed series of beliefs. Factually based conclusions are its sole foundation.
point well taken. but if science is the pursuit of understanding what we don't yet understand, i.e. expanding knowledge ... there are more than one way of doing that ... the Western scientific method is very effective, not desparaging it, but it's just one way and many things that it can't yet understand.

There is no "science" in this man's discussion. Science is about developing falsifiable hypotheses, verification through experiment, reproducibility and peer review. There is none of this in "Blackfoot science". He's claiming that indigenous stories and myths are exempt from standards of evidence, this is magic, it's the opposite of science. If you're gravely ill, you have a life-threatening illness, are you going to the smudge hut or medicine man? No, you're not. You're going to the hospital where you will be treated with evidence-based medicine.

@@brenttaylor7196 Yeah, don't think you listened seriously. He's saying that there is a beyond to the current dogmatic view of science, and if they change some minor presuppositions that science can grow beyond what it is. Science isn't absolute and requires nuanced critique.
@MYOB of course you'd say that without typing any actual reason because you feel like it threatens the foundations of what you've based your entire life on to date. another good lesson from indigenous teachers: in the grand scheme of creation, you are a beautiful but nonetheless insignificant part of it all. so try to approach conversations like the one Dr. Littlebear continues here without the self aggrandising ego and narcissism that western science and the westernised academy attempt to pump up our asses. and instead of getting yourself in a fury about a well reasoned critique, engage with it and see what you come out with.

The way I see it, what Dr Little Bear is talking about is relevant to what we need to consider in order to better adhere to our constitution, and bring us back from the brink of collapse.
