  • After 23 years of providing healthcare to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center inmates, Dr.Abdul Jamaludeen, or “Dr. J”, officially retired today following a farewell fiesta luncheon in the the VBSO Muster Room.
Sheriff Rocky Holcomb presented Dr. J with a shadow box and Holcomb’s mom, Beth Holcomb, gave Dr. J other gifts. Beth Holcomb, as the jails Health Services Administrator from the 1990’s until 2011, hired Dr. J in 2001.
In honor of Dr. J’s time with the jail, the clinic will be named after him, the Sheriff told the crowd gathered for the retirement bash.
Jamaludeen, who once ran his own practice, said he enjoyed providing healthcare in the jail because it allowed him to give continuous care to its 1,000 inmates, many of whom have not had access to routine medical care for years. He has been able to establish one-on-one relationships and treat chronic conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, while they’re in custody and teach them how to manage those conditions upon release. He made over 3,000 sick calls last year. On Thursday, Dr. J said he visited some of those inmates who have been under his long-term care.
Jamaludeen plans to retire to his native Baltimore. His daughter, son and daughter-in-law attended the retirement party.
Congratulations, Dr. J! Enjoy the next chapter of your life. We will miss you!
