Can a Cap'n Crunch whistle seize a telephone trunk???

Legend has it that "Captain Crunch", phone phreaker extraordinaire, could seize trunks and make free telephone call using only this premium that was include in 'specially marked boxes of Quaker Cap'n Crunch cereal in the late 1960s. If one of the two holes was glued closed, the remaining hole generated a perfect 2600 Hz tone. This tone was the key to Bell Telephone's vast long distance and toll network. Dialing a free 1-800 number and blowing the tone from the whistle would disconnect the trunk, which was then awaiting new routing instructions. On newer trunks lines, a blue box was needed to make the needed digit tones (similar to Touch-Tone), but older trunks could be dialed by blowing short spurts of 2600Hz in the same cadence as a rotary telephone dial.
Here, we examine the legend and check the frequency of an authentic Cap'n Crunch whistle against a calibrated and crystal-controlled tone source. Next, we try to seize a real long distance trunk on ProjectMF (630-485-2995).
