great video! not a lot of fresh takes on yohji out there, well said.
i was waiting in the passport line in Paris during FW and saw yohji skip past everybody with a small entourage, he clears passport control in less than 20 seconds, and as i was looking back, 10 young people wearing all black with silver suitcases stood in line with the rest of us. it was the rest of his team in full uniform.
one of my coolest fashion moments, can't believe he is almost 80

Yohji explaining how he designs is very similar to architecture. As a retired architect, we weren’t designing building, parks etc - we design spaces that humans can experience. How you connect those spaces to each other and the transitions you provide is an expression of architecture.
Ma was very similar to an article in architecture school that we have to absorb regarding Space and Anti-Space. Very interesting in the menswear space.

Amen, Yohji Yamamoto is a legend and he is actually what inspired me to get into fashion. Since looking at his works I have felt inspired to make my own clothes someday.

This was a really good breakdown of how wabi-sabi can be used in fashion. I think its common for people to tie this mentality to deconstruction because they have so many similarities, like visible stitching and unhemmed garments, so in your next video it makes me curious if you will talk about that connection

Yohji is my favorite designer, mostly due to the incredible tailoring and craftsmanship. Whenever i see one of his mens runway shows i see every model coming on like a new MC. I can just feel and imagine all the stories and mysteries hanging around each outfit. He truly speaks to my imagination

4:20 I read that Yohji created Y-3 because the avarage men on the streets were dressed so badly and he knew they wouldn’t buy his mainline clothes so he thought he could created cheaper basic sport insipred clothing that would have more mass appeal and elevate the style of common NPC’s around the world.

Having a few YY pieces, one thing I noticed about the clothes is how they fit. In the essence of imperfection, even the 'tailored' pieces aren't inteded to look tailored. You will end up buying something either too large or maybe too long. :) A piece is actually intended to fit a large range of body types and sizes and the drape will be different. I learned to not care a lot about exact fit it in the end. That's probably how the Yohji inteds it to be worn.

Yohji Yamamotos clothes have been the most wearable items in my wardrobe I've ever had. They don't overstep an idea or aesthetic that makes them too unwearable for day to day. Also I don't have a worried feeling of the wear they might accumulate in the use I enjoy.

Love your videos. I’m in my 70s & soooo tired of thoughtless, badly made fast fashion herdwear. As a huge fan of Japanese aesthetic, I look forward to your thoughts(and designs?). Thanks

It's crazy how you describe it because I'm not somebody who knows the story behind these people when I go shopping, I just look for what suits me, but the way you describe Yohji is exactly what I see reflected in his work. Yohji has become my favorite designer for these reasons

been a yohji fan for over 25 years, and you nailed it. I also grew up middle class (when it existed), then became poor and eventually homeless. Second hand clothing and the wabi sabi ideaology really brings a relaxing air to ones aesthetic, to ones stride and demeanor when you embrace imperfections.

I believe ppl who truly love Yohji's design all share a similar attitude towards the outer world, namely a sense of indifference. Yohji is among one of the very few true dandies who are still with us, another one is Bob Dylan. Only ppl who are truly aware of oneself would understand and appreciate his philosophy behind his design. To hell with the mainstream.

Amazing video. After many years I’ve found myself ending up at CDG and Yohji. Having lived in Japan all my life though my experience is a little different from what you describe. I often pass by Yohji stores without going in. It’s a feeling of ‘ok dad’, you know dad is smart but….
With CDG there is an excitement and feeling of constant new life.
Now regarding wabi-sabi I do have a different view all together. I think this is becoming an overused term which (often from a western gaze) is imposed on Japanese designers. I think it was Rei who once said, I don’t want to be thought of a just another Japanese designer’.
    Finally, Play is an abomination.

hey, I dont want to hate but, your writing is very general, and does sound very well thought out and adlibbed. Like you talk in a general way thats kind of uninformative. For instance just calling his clothing "poetic" without explaining what you mean by that just sounds like sophistry, and by the end of the video. Also as far as i understand Wabi-Sabi is very common to japanese desighn ethos is fashionl and Im not sure why Yohji's work is particularly and example of this. The video sounds like an adlibbed video essay, like youre a lecturer, lecturing with no script.

I watch this sort of stuff. Yall don’t like Pharrell. None of yall. I like yall, that’s why I watch your videos, nuna yall like Pharrell. Not one. It’s almost in vogue to not like Pharrell. Why is that? What are we doing here? 0:49 what’s wrong with Pharrell in an Army digitized suite on the bridge in Paris with a choir from Virginia singing and performing a song he produced and created, on a bridge in Paris with Jay-Z Beyoncé and ASAP Rocky And Pregnant Rihanna. And yall didn’t like that? You weren’t moved? I almost cried. It’s the single most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen. I’m still inspired, I’m fina go watch the video right now. But yeah Pharrell is incredible. He’s the perfect choice. I love living in a world where Pharrell Williams is the head of LV, I like that. It’s like we’ve got Obama Back. I’m serious he’s fashion ObAma. And shot out to Ye.

It is a great disrespect to call the body meets clothes, clothes meets body collection comme1997 hunchback-The collection was a discourse on lots of things a comment on the sexualization of women’s bodies see, for example what Tom Ford was doing in the 90s and body image completely ahead of its time with an incredibly significant message

how dare you call Yohji's clothing perfect - perfection is ugly ;) nah fr though great video personally Yohji-san's work and mindset correlated to how I viewed the world in and out of the magnifying glass of clothing and he's the only craftsman I purchase from for my battlefield of life and like his 96ss collection he needs his flowers! I've been blessed to go to the 2 most recent Yamamoto shows and being around my fellow crows is like were experiencing the last words of socrates before we're banished to hell
