    The Jul blood thing isnt that much of an issue, remember in Glasslands one of the larger themes of the book is Jul getting over his own honor to do what is necessary such as allying with a fundamentalism group of Elites who he considers to be elder killing monsters to give himself a better shot at killing the Arbiter when honor would dictate he challenge him head on. So its not unreasonable to assume that Jul can push aside that honor for what he needs to do.

    I am working on a theory that covers Naomi's existence, and the Spartan numbers in general. Currently, I am thinking she may have been part of Black Team, but that's a huge discussion.
    As for the Chief: in Halo CE, he was thought to be the last Spartan. During Halo 2, the other Spartans were on a different deployment, and he was thought to be the last again during Halo 3.

  • @HaloCanon

    As seen in Halo Reach, though, and has since been mentioned in newer media (namely the Traviss books), the explosive harness was use by Elites, too.

    I think we really do need to look at halseys deeds from the eyes of someone from outside the Spartans programme. There reason why everyone here is so in love with Halsey and complaining that 343i seems to hate her is because until now we have only ever looked at Halsey from the eyes of John or other Spartans, needless to say, our opinion of Halsey is the same as the Spartans see her, motherly, and noble, most halo fans have been brainwashed into loving Halsey the same way the Spartans were. But the cold hard reality of what she did needs to be seen from outside the programme from people who haven't been brainwashed. Think about it, if she really existed, and she REALLY did that stuff, what do you think would happen to her? This book goes down 343is direction of HUMANISING the Spartans. Be they john (in halo 4) or Naomi and osman in kilo 5. Something which bungee totally neglected to do by the way. Honestly, this series felt so real, and so grounded in reality, and the opinions and reactions of the characters to halseys crimes were so powerful, I felt this could have been the most realistic yet. The bits explaining Naomi's kidnap were powerful. And the reactions of the parents perfectly captured. It felt almost real.

      I agree that we should look at Halsey from a more objective viewpoint. I loved that her actions were being reexamined initially. The problem really comes from the in-universe motivations, and the fact that the author seems to be in love with Admiral Margaret Parangosky, a woman arguable worse that Halsey. The other problem is that the view point is practically shoved down people's throats. Halsey is barely in the book, and every few pages are characters talking about how evil she is.

    • @ThaTurminator
      @ThaTurminator 10 років тому +2

      +halo canon Halsey has been over exposed. We've seen her in the games, comics and other books. I think having 1 or 2 books that deeply, explores the negative side of what she did from the perspective her Spartans, her assistants, her collaborators and her victims! provides a fair enough balance. It shows the other side, the families left behind and the people who suffered to give us the Spartans and the consequences of such. Defend her all you want from the brainwashed spartan perspective we've been exposed to in all the other media, but and the end of the day, she kidnapped children, created human clones knowing they'd die, tortured children, experimented on them, and killed children. That sound like something out of auschwits concentration camp. And she stole colonial kids to fight other colonials. It's not Halsey hate. It's pretty fair and objective. The war is over and humanity now has to move on an rebuild and also look at the decisions it took in the cold hard light of day.

    • @HaloCanon
      @HaloCanon  10 років тому +6

      ThaTurminator I'm not defending her, I'm decrying horrible story-telling. Again, I like the contrasted look at Halsey. She did some terrible things and that needs to be acknowledged. However, the author is practically turning a character that's arguable just as bad, if not worse than Halsey, into a Saint (Admiral Parangosky). Worse is the reason for Parangosky hating Halsey. She tried lied to Parangosky about the clones? How? How would Halsey have hidden such a massive undertaking? And from the head of ONI, no less?
      I'll point out again that Halsey is barely in the book, and yet we hear about how horrible she is every couple of pages (that's not an exaggeration, either). It's the author shoving her opinion down your throat instead of using subtlety to guide a reader to the conclusion the author wants. Glasslands actually did this fairly well, in my opinion, but The Thursday War and Mortal Dictata failed, utterly.

      Halo Canon
      I agree with you Halo Canon. It true Halsey isn't a saint but there are numerous references to why the admiral is a more horrible person. In the case of Halsey, her only crimes are centered around the Spartan program which she has regretted since the program started. In terms of clones isn't better that she used them than 75 kids going missing. It is not favorable but isn't it better to let parents think their kids died from disease rather than who knows what. In the book it made it sound like Halsey did everything because she had too much time. Never did they talk about why the program was necessary and why she did the things she did.

    • @HaloCanon
      @HaloCanon  9 років тому +3

      Namindu Bathwadanage And never mind the fact that Parangosky herself approved of the program (even if she didn't approve of the clones), and later sanctioned the Spartan-III program, and program that was pitched to her as "trading lives for time".

    I find the cool idea with Mark VII being able to upgrade it'self as pretty interesting, as it could explain how the Master Chief's armour was upgraded between Halo 3 and Halo 4.
    The fact that Mark VII looks like Mark V is probably a way to suggest that the Master Chief's Mark VI armour might have some experimental nano-bot technology that Mark VII is able to fully capitalise on.
    Just an idea

  • @HaloCanon
    @HaloCanon  12 років тому +1

    It's possible, but the way it was discussed in the book, it seemed to imply that the Engineers would have had no problem removing the explosive harnesses. I may have misread that section, but that's what the book implied, to me.

  • @HaloCanon

    I get in Glasslands why Halsey is painted in a different light, but it just continues and, arguably, gets worse in the Thursday War. Fans unfamiliar with the fiction before the Traviss books have no frame of reference except ONI's, which is incredibly bias. At least in her Gears books, Traviss tried to paint a fair picture of Adam Fenix (arguable as big a monster as Halsey). We see his point of view, and see why others hate him for his actions. This is not true in her Halo books.

    • @michaelandreipalon359
      @michaelandreipalon359 2 роки тому

      Yeah, Traviss only did well in Gears of War and Star Wars: Republic Commando novels in my opinion. This and SW: Legacy of the Force really are too bonkers for their own good.

  • @HaloCanon

    It is, in a way. The Chief's new look is a result of nanobots, but there's a difference. Mk. VII can automatically update itself, and it seems, based on "The Thursday War", it can change based on the will of the user.
    In the case of the Chief's armor, Cortana had a direct had in "guiding" the upgrade, if that makes sense.

    The book was was not very clear on the Engineers harnesses to me as well. But I remember in Glasslands there was a part where Kilo five captured a harnessed Engineer from several Brutes, and it did not seem to want to blow itself up to me, I could be wrong though.
    Thank you for posting this video BTW, I'm glad there is someone reviewing the books that knows a lot about about Halo Cannon.

    She did lie about the Spartans at Reach, but the nature of this lie is unknown. As it stands, 25 Spartan-IIs were present at Reach for OPERATION: Red Flag. Halsey's lie could open the door to more Spartans, but it was meant to address the exist discrepancies about Spartans numbers, not allow for new ones.
    As for the Huragok from First Strike: one was killed after repair the Chief's shields, but several others where successfully brought back to Earth, and there's still the issue with Virgil.

    It seems that when facing Humanity and adopting the Jiralhanae, the Covenant became more aggressive in their game of "keep away" with the Huragok. I'm sure that at first they only asked the Engineers to dismantle/eradicate Forerunner tech. However as seen in Halo 3: ODST, the Jiralhanae were quite forceful when implanting the explosive.
    With that in mind, I'm sure Virgil and his comrades sought freedom.
    As for what happened to him and the others after the game, that remains to be seen.

  • @ec4370
    @ec4370 12 років тому +3

    A very good review, I agree with Most of your points especially the one with the Blood.
    However, when you talked about the Engineers in ODST, is it not possible that the Covenant lied to the Engineers to make them more willing to be armed? And the six Engineers that sacrificed themselves for Virgil figured that out? I'm just wondering if that is a possibility rather than ignoring Sadie's story (which was one of my favorite things about ODST).
    P.S. Subed

    Basically Halsey did everything she did by intent- Adam did it by ignorance.
    The first halo book actually says what Halsey did was disgusting.
    Now what’s the difference?
    Perspective.
    One book is by Adam’s Son’s perspective- if you check characters outside of it you get some really bad hate especially in the Slab.
    Halsey- she has no relatives, no family- even the people she worked with said she went too far and she went to the extent Oni would go.
    Edit.
    Adam did stuff out of ignorance basically- think ‘hey they truly can’t be this desperate’ or ‘surly the smarter ones will handle this for them’ never believing the worse can happen.

      I like the kilo five trilogy and find it interesting because it's after the covenant war and shows the rise of cult groups and Halsey being hated by ONI and the abduction of Naomi when she was 6 years old and when the clone died and the wife died too it caused the father to have a grudge against the UNSC and a group made of ODST's and an AI and professor in the culture of the sanghelli

    For canon what is the deal with Naomi 010? Who is she? How did she survive the human covenant war with no mention of her? And how does this tie in with the games portraying the Master Chief as the last known available Spartan 2?

  • @michaelandreipalon359
    @michaelandreipalon359 2 роки тому

    Ah, the Kilo-Five trilogy. Honestly, never got into rereading these nowadays, just like Traviss' work on Star Wars: Legacy of the Force (though I like her Republic Commando novels up to Order 66, even if they got some of the author's signature flaws).
    In my opinion, they're semi-canon, if not broad strokes. Some notable events did happen as shown in the books proper, but a sizable amount... just didn't, with the implication that said book descriptions of the events are actually just pro-ONI propaganda files sent for S-IV Spartans during the 343 era of games.

    Halo Canon you need to understand that the reason why ONI hates Halsey because in the halo first strike she abducted Kelly and fled so that makes her a war criminal so don't say anything until you read the part in halo first strike novel where Halsey abducted Kelly
