I had a go on a tuned racing Rudge Ulster way back in the 1980's and it was a memorable experience. Compared to modern 500cc singles I've ridden since, it felt more powerful which huge surges of torque. One could almost feel the piston travel down the cylinder on the power strokes!!A friend has had an aluminium cylinder jacket cast and has fitted a liner as he surmises that Rudge would have progressed this way, had they continued into the 1950's, being always at the front on new development. The Ulster motor mounted in a Jawa 896 grass track frame and runs against modern bikes extremely well, so I'm told, with the ally pot giving improved performance over the old iron item.Perhaps if Rudge had continued into the 1960's and 1970's perhaps the British bike industry wouldn't have been such a walkover for the Japanese bike manufacturers. Suzuki even used Rudge's RFVC innovation and Guzzi the concept of linked brakes. Many decades ahead of their time.
