mtg used to have amazing lore, each set was 3 parts, we had the Kami wars in Kamigawa, we had amazing Ravinica, we had all the Phyrexia vs Urza lore. Than came the shit walkers, and now everything is marvel
It's a shame that they follow up on the exquisite experience that was Foundations limited with this slap on the face. And i agree, Alchemy is some bullshit that shouldn't exist. It's comprised of broken, fake cards. If you see an alchemy commander in brawl you can be sure it will not be a good game and you're not gonna win.
I appreciate the honest introspection about most likely being suckered into buying magic related things on other games because I can relate. I hate the UB being forced into the real non commander formats too and would love to see more good non gimmicky sets but that being said if it was like Berserk and a souls/elden ring type set instead of spider man…. I would be all for it. So really it’s shitty bias and although I’d love those sets and think they’d actually fit decently into magic a fantasy themed ip (originally), the only good option is to just not have UB outside of commander products at all
5:02 They didn’t make 4 or 5 worlds before anyway. After they stopped the block structure, they would introduce 1 or 2 new worlds each year and the other sets would be revisiting old worlds which generally requires less creative input except in cases like Kamigawa where everything was completely different
Been playing for a little over 2 months. At best I'm thinking of just upkeeping my arena account and at worst I'm thinking about leaving magic entirely. Marvel in standard is just way too much for me.
They could make even more money by selling alternate card art for the universes beyond sets that hides their sources. Sort of like those alt arts for crimson vow that made cards into Van Helsing or whoever, but in reverse. Turn the cards more generic, but keep the mechanics. Some people would pay for that.
That was what they promised originally, well after the walking dead layer, but now they don't even want to bother with that anymore. They would instead just rather turn MTG into a worse version of WeißSchwarz. The only difference being that WeißSchwarz was a IP mash battler from the start, and even there the most popular format (in the west) is the one where each deck is limited to cards of a single IP, while MTG was originally it's own IP and now every deck will be full of cards from multiple different IP.
Its weird to have heman and skeletor show up in your magic deck, flavor wise. But some of the cards are very strong and silly to not include in your tournament deck. I agree that they shouldn't include them in standard. The dumping of constant product on us looks like theyre trying to make a corporate stash before closing down shop, or just keeping up on purchasing demand. Mtg players are 50,000,000+ deep after all.
Magic started off as a counter culture to corporatism. Now it's under Disney. That's the problem in brevity. Those cards are worth much, much more these days.
Magic has always been a bit of Universus Beyond if you know it’s history; some of the earliest sets had references to literature, sets based around cultures, and didn’t really get into a true story until a few years later. Hell one of the biggest story lines was about the Weatherlight and its crew fighting Phyrexia, and do you know what happened? They all died and decided to start on a new slate. They did it again around 2005 with the Time Spiral block and we got Lorwyn that changed what Planeswalkers were established beforehand. Is the Magic storylines good? Not really, but they could be fun with their theming. Innistrad is considered a classic now when it’s really just Gothic horror and all of its tropes. Is Spider-Man weird in Magic? Sure but Frankenstein’s monster has been in the game since the mid 90’s
The signs were there already. It already felt like play commander or get out. I cannot seperate UB from commander in my head. I don't want to play commander so I guess I should get out.
I have some experience in YGO. Its very hostile to new player, but if you want to try it then I can get you in the game without tossing you in the total deep end. I personally would like to try grand archive or Vampire of the eternal struggle,
I started playing MTG just as walking dead came out. I quit just after Warhammer UB and when I saw the final fantasy UB announcement. That was the final straw. Why destroy their own 30 year old MTG IP? Wtf?
Haven’t played much MTGA at all since the news about 6 sets and UUB in standard. Did not buy the usual pass and 50 packs from the new set. Just felt, nah. Think that is entusiasm thats just gone.
I blame the mtg content creators on youtube and the new playerbase of the last 10 years. Both our crap, disrespect the game, and should have been gatekept. Absolute tourists and their commander board game
I know, right? And when you say this on social media, you get people saying "Coca Cola? I love it! It would have been awesome if it was in Lord of the Rings!" Ugh. Sadly, these are the spendy types though, right? The ones that impulse buy figures of their favorite characters, spending thousands of dollars on plastic to fill their shelves with. They'll spend more money than veteran players like myself playing old copies of cards they've had or decades. 🤷♂️
i'm gonna be honest im excited to play the spongebob set. I play standard every day on arena I think standard is an online format now. I play modern and commander in paper.
As long as the world in universe beyond feel similar to what magic the gathering already has then I’m fine with it. Final fantasy is very sword and sorcery like magic already is. Spider-Man is different yes but not different enough that I’m going to quit the game over it.
Magic worlds of the last few years suck. Brothers war was legit. The shit gimmick sets are universes beyond. So really its everything post aftermath sucks
Same, I'm pretty uninterested in all but the Tarkir set next year - and not even optimistic that one will be done well

Gatewatch was okay. Although I also preferred the game without them

As the Everly Brothers once sang, "You've lost that loving feeling..."
2:58 I think that ixalan was a nice set, but it was like that because it's a carbon copy of real life
Lol, that’s a really funny way to look at it. I also liked Ixalan, even though the newest Ixalan Story ended too soon.

Wizards wants Magic to be Fortnite soooo bad. I feel like I started playing Magic right before it plummeted in quality.

karlov Manor is ravnica.

I feel exactly the same way right now. My current escape and experiment is the Pokemon TCG.
No we don't. Leaves
Alchemy>standard its 100% more fun
Funko pop population needs to be exiled tbh
MTG has become the "fast food" of world building.

Feel free to use that heman and skeletor idea for future sets, WOTC. 😆

Try Flesh and Blood❤

Imagine if Fellowship of the Ring had a legit Coca Cola commercial for the encounter with the balrog. That's what Universes Beyond does to Standard.

I will literally stop playing magic the gathering. If I wanted to play with spider-man cards, I would play the spider-man tcg and not magic
Warhammer doesn't have fantastic lore. It's probably the only thing out there with worse lore than current MTG lore.
nice bait
