      @@squarrot9355 I am aware, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s said that he feels uncomfortable with the name. One, he doesn’t want people to look up to him as a parental figure, because that would mean minors on the channel. And two, he’s not very fond of people calling him “daddy”, for obvious reasons.
      He changed the name thing to “Art Guy”, and the series name to “Dear Pencil Pals”.

    My only tip would be to add more texture to different types of fabric- they all have the same shiny look (that I love) but some fabrics would take on light different. One of my favorite things to do is add subtle vertical small stripes (like a ribbed turtleneck) it just adds that much more detail and contrast.
    Then again I know you’re trying to simplify things… so ah ignore this
    Also i would die for Mabel and Robin and we’ll- all of them

    I kind of have the same thing/problem with my style too! I get self conscious about it and don’t think of just letting my brain turn off and not focus on details 😅 Sometime you just gotta let your brain go brrr when doodling in a sketchbook (hope this doesn’t sound so awkward…….XP)
    Also the simplified style could add more to some comedic aspects to some of the characters and make you feel more loose while you draw. That kind of works for me at least (I hope that helps!)
    Btw nice work Oliver!

    this happened to me a lot in the past, I drew mostly semi-realistic with some touch of anime, I ended up restarting my whole art style to just basically look like something between anime and cartoony, and I'm happy with it 🤧🤧

    I have a pretty simple art style, as well as an even simpler one I use for quick concepts. When you’re going simplistic, the focus shifts from lines to shapes. I have a mostly lineless style so that’s especially apparent, but even in my more simple style (which uses a lot of lines) the focus is still on shapes. I only draw a line if it’s necessary to convey information about plane shifts, textures, the boundaries of a shape- otherwise, I just work in simple shapes. For example, a pair of jeans only gets a seamline to show the form, a line at the crotch, and maybe pockets. Everything else (fit, weight, material, etc-) is shown through the shapes.
    It’s also helpful to simplify the shapes themselves. Drawing floursacks taught me how to make shapes express weight, emotion, and character- you don’t need much! A turtleneck can just be a squishy cube with a square bit poking out for the collar, a leg can just be some bendy tapered tubes.
    In the most extreme cases, a hand can be simplified to a triangle or diamond- though that’s usually reserved for extra fast fashion illustration inspired sketches.

    • @L_Aster
      @L_Aster Рік тому

      the importance of seamlines to me cannot be overstated… I don’t tend to draw wrinkles, but I can show them with a zigzag at a normally straight seamline and maybe a little bumpout in the nook of whatever’s bending. And it works perfectly fine for most materials!

  • @em7159
    @em7159 Рік тому +5

    Maybe look at the adventure artstyle. You can easily see the shapes. But it's a art style that a lot of people hate since it's so simple. Which is rude because adverture story telling would take way longer. You don't have to do dot eyes either can do big eyes and more shape language. You can even do a chibi art style. Hope this helps.

    Waking up and the first thing you see if your favourite UA-camrs new video is posted WHILE you are in an arty mood. The best thing ever I now can draw while watching this video and eventually just put all your videos on shuffle, cause I’ve already seen them all
    Post video watching comment: Oliver, this style is both very cool, and very cute. And it definetly looks like your art style but simpler. I absolutely love it and would love seeing it more often!

    I feel like because of your shading style even this "simplified" style feels pretty on par with your usual stuff! Maybe playing around with flatter shading instead will make it more distinct. I think even with a different shading style it'll still look very much like your art just because the way you draw and do lines is rather unique.
    Also just a fun thing I think about with style, though it doesn't apply much to the pictures you drew in this video, is that I find ears a good marker of style. Even with a change in style, the way people draw ears usually remain the same because they're so complex that once we find a comfortable way to stylize them people tend not to change it lol

    hi!! i love ur channel! this might be the first time im commenting here tho 0_o
    this video was really interesting to watch bc it mirrors something ive been trying to do with my art lately! although in my case, i really want the simplification to be permanent lol. i feel like a major weakness of my older art was focusing a lot on -unhelpful- details just bc they were maybe fun to draw, or i thought i needed them, so for the past couple years ive been deliberately trying to draw more cartoony (after a period where i tried to draw super realistic anatomy because i thought drawing anime was bad lol). simplifying your art when you're used to doing more complex/realistic stuff is surprisingly hard. makes me think cartoonists must work their butts off to get those super simple styles to work. youre totally on point about using a bigger brush size for inking, too. it was a big adjustment for me but i really like how my work's been turning out recently (and i hope youve been enjoying your recent work too!). i think having to simplify your work is good for your art brain, cause it makes you think about what you really /need/ to get the idea of a drawing across.
    haha sorry for the whole paragraph comment lol ive just been thinking about this exact art topic lately so it was fun to see a video about this right now! :3

    Welcome back Oliver! Since you asked for a bit of advice, it’s kinda just about drawing characters and figuring what really makes your art different. Then you can accentuate those details and loose detail in the places that don’t really matter! Like loosing detail some parts of anatomy like ears or noses and armpits, lol.
    As for something like shading and highlights, you can simplify them by using only one color. You could also lose detail in the way you shade :)
    I hope this helped a tad 😅

    I absolutely love the way you draw various things and every video you make I love analyzing the details and maybe rewatch dozen time to learn the cool tips and tricks you teach of shading detail, simplifying , honestly I love others art work but I love that at the end of the day I don't wanna copy cat I wanna learn how to improve and see what I'm not trying that other artists do such as I don't render as much as I should I just coloring page style slap on the color and then 1 cell shaded and light layer and call it dine, but bow I'm learning how to merge layers and blend or cross hatch shading and ad many many more layers of detail instead of just 3.

    I have advise. But like idk if its going to work for you butt the first the second and third one that you drew i think have a lil just a lil bit to much shading like coming from an artist which has a very simple art style it would have been closer to your goal if they were not shaded alot how you did and like flat colours and a lil bit of shading on parts that shading is commonly used like for eg you drew a skirt underneath that you get what i am saying right?
