To Amanda Joe......Wish you a good recovery, but give your body time to get better. I had Covid and it lasted 7 weeks. I thought it would never get better, but one day I felt the old one again. I was happy I gave my body all the time it needed to heal. Otherwise It may have lasted a lot longer and without knowing it would become good. So Wish you all the best!

Thanks for the update Shawn. Really interesting as always.
If you've noticed less engagement with some of your other videos recently, I wouldn't worry too much. There have been some pretty major political, sporting and weather events occurring in Europe, over the last few weeks, and that has probably sucked up some bandwidth from the European contingent of our team (certainly been the case for me).
Once everything settles back down we'll be back hungry for geology learning.

The electric power station was built in 1976 by HS Orka. It was the world's first combined geothermal power plant for electric power generation and hot water production for district heating. During 1979-80 while stationed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Keflavik, the entire airbase benefited from the district hot water heating and electricity.
PS - at the time, we use to drive over to what is the Blue Lagoon, walk across the lava field and use some rickety wooden stairs to swim in the hot waste water.

Thanks for this! I have family in Keflavik and I remember going to the Blue Lagoon when there was just a small rustic building where we paid our fee at the window, changed in a small dressing/shower/locker room and then bathed in the lagoon. I'm sure that would have been in the 70's.

Im late to this particular video. A catch up comment - Just to say that the wide variety of topics are an attractive feature of the series. Its summer (of a sort !) 2024 in Ireland and the students are out in force working on their dissertations. What's nice is how freely they will talk about their intentions and its nice to have a handle (however small) on the science they are learning. This series has been a great boon. Looking forward especially to more of the 101 productions but all are engaging thanks to the variety and to the personal touch. Get well soon Amanda Jo !

Shawn, if you have the time, I would love it if you could tell us something about the volcanoes in Italy. Etna recently erupted, Stromboli is erupting. Residents seem quite concerned. Thank you for all you teach us!

Sorry. I’m not familiar with those volcanoes and pretty maxed out in other avenues.

    • @Dragrath1
      @Dragrath1 17 днів тому

Stromboli has been erupting for pretty much all of recorded human history barring brief several day to several month gaps so the main anomalous threats there have to do with collapse events as the piling up of lava and clastic material becomes too much for the volcano to support leading to pyroclastic flows and tsunami's.
Etna is a very different and much more unpredictable beast as rather than erupting basalt it erupts a somewhat more siliceous and alkaline Basaltic trachyandesite which has a viscocity jist right to give it the capacity for more effusive strombolian lava fountains and even producing a number of fralk eruptions with lava tubes and highly explosive pyroclastic dominated eruptive activity including full blown Plinian eruptions with its last major Plinian caldera forming eruption being in 122 BCE.
Other notable events include a Mt St Helens style major eastern flank collapse into the Mediterranean around 8,000 years ago which triggered a large trans-Mediterranean tsunami and some Pleistocene aged ignimbrite deposits with volcanic ash from Etna being found as far away as Rome. These eruptions produced several large calderas which have been subsequently filled in by the modern edifice of Mt Etna. If Etna were to unleash some of the historical or prehistoric scale eruptions no where on Sicily would be safe from its pyroclastic flows. The only reason the island is as "safe" as it is in recent human history given its high rates of activity is because most of Etna's explosive eruptive activity has been channeled through its horseshoe shaped collapse scar to the East but the volcano has largely filled in this collapse scar and rebuilt most of its pre collapse height.
One day Etna will likely unleash another large VEI 5+ Plinian eruption wiping out Sicily again as it has several times through human history but people's memories are short sighted and the volcano has for modern history been in its edifice rebuilding phase but based on its past history we shouldn't expect it to last forever. It was made one of the decade volcanoes for a reason.
Both have been extremely active for pretty much all of human history Stromboli more than Etna but Etna is a more fickle and dangerous volcano just as capable of causing destruction on the same scale as what Vesuvius did to Herculaneum and Pompeii, with the added complacency from apparently "safe" spectacular strombolian eruptions to make its destruction all the more deadly.

Having had a long career in petroleum exploration, it is interesting to see the borehole data collected during the development of the geothermal reservoir. It would be interesting to see that data, as well as the actual drill cuttings and or core analysis that would have been done.

Thank you, Shawn, for your quick summary of events in Iceland and for your insightful summary/overview of this 1983 paper. I had a question for you on the inferred cross-section that you showed and discussed. At about 1000m, there is a layer of "Basalt Lava". As you go from bore hole #8 to #4, the authors have the layer tapering off at one level and then beginning at a slightly lower level. Is there a particular reason, do you think, why they didn't basically draw a line connecting the tops and connecting the bottoms of this layer? I don't see anything to suggest that the layer at #8 vanishes as you head toward #4 while another layer starts up at the same position! It's not like there aren't other places on the cross-section where basalt lava layers change depths across the plot. I'm sure that I'm missing something ... but what? 🙂

Question: when you refer to ‘negative’ magnitude earthquakes, what exactly does that mean? As a non-geologist, it seems counter-intuitive. That is to say, if an earthquake is of ‘negative’ magnitude, why is it considered an earthquake? To me, magnitude implies powerful, positive’ tectonic or magmatic phenomena (similar to integers).

I guess geology is one field where old papers are still generally up to date. Rocks don't move around all that much. If there are faults in that area, why does the magma intrusion not find one of those more vertically-oriented faults and rise, rather than squeezing off to the east and then coming up? Do those faults not reach down close enough to the magma?

2:30 This is probably a translation thing. The Icelandic text sounds more neutral than the English version. It would be more accurate to say "just under 20 earthquakes" and "just over 260 earthquakes", which is common to say when rounding numbers. They're just stating and summarizing numbers without interpreting them :)

With multiple drill holes we would first create a "fence" diagram, basically a cross section between two bore holes, and assemble all of those cross sections and project them to a single plane. In the old days, this took a lot of ink. Now, with computers and 3d modelling, we can visualize so much better!

If they had enough surface seismometers, they could use earthquakes to develop an accurate 3d model of the whole subsurface area, including the magma dykes and chambers. It just needs sensors and a decent pc. The technology to do it already exists, and it could show the accurate composition of magma and its location and movement almost in real time..

If there was access to the raw data, would an updated 3D plot would be a touch more accurate than flattening the plot as shown in the paper?

Easy to see why new magma can intrude horizontally (forming sills) in this geological layer cake with alternating interglacial lavaflows and glacial-age volcanic breccias.
