- A Book Review for "Wizard's First Rule," the first book in the "Sword of Truth" Series. This is my first video using the new laptop's webcam so I apologize for any quality issues it may have. Otherwise, subscribe for other videos coming soon concerning fantasy book reviews, fantasy board game reviews, and information regarding my own fantasy work, "Rise of the Black Phoenix!"
I'm also trying to do some reviews with little about the plot for spoilers as I can. Just highlighting some of the things I liked about the book and some things which need improving.
Matthew Bartlett - Alpha of the Eagle
The Denna ordeal was what made me decide i needed to see this book series through.
I just love these books and love the story, As a blossoming writer I listen to different styles of writers and how they handle charater devleopment in a series of books and so on....thanks for doing these reviews it makes me read the book all over again only on audiable where I can listen to the whole book at one time
I loved this book series. The wizard's Rules especially the First one. Is something that I feel applies to now a days. It's how I personally deal with people when talking about certain topics.
Can you say what the book that is ripping off material is now??? Since it's been 3 years haha
Zedd is my favorite character by far! I am currently reading this book right now. I am loving it. If you're interested, I have posted my own commentary about this book on my channel. You have great insight!
The show was a mockery of the books. Not in a cuel sense, not in a comic sense but, it was. Think of the show like this. The show was the books not so bright third Cousin twice removed.
The books are not good anyways.
I absolutely adore this series, It deserves a major movie IMO
I love them all except Pillars of Creation and the Omen Machine...those were terrible. I read them anyway. Omen Machine was so bad I had to take a break. Overall I love this series though. I saw another guys channel ripping it to shreds and it felt really biased. This was a good review
Was that channel “Daniel Greene” by any chance? Cause I saw his video on Wizards first Rule and it through me off reading the series for a long while, as well as some other things I heard about Goodkind himself, but I eventually got really curious and decided to check it out anyways. And right now I’m more than halfway through the first book and enjoying it a lot so far.
@@stevetrowbridge7425 yes I think it was him. Really love that series overall especially the first two books
Yeah, I’ve heard from several people that the first few books seem to be the best, but I’m definitely willing to see the whole series through as a whole. I also am interested in reading the Nicci chronicles, as she seems like a pretty interesting character, from what I’ve heard anyways.
@@stevetrowbridge7425 Not a fan of David Greene. I read his first book & it was beyond horrible. IMO, you have no room to slam an author & his fans when your own writing is bad. He actually said that the Sword of Truth series is for people who can't read & handle real fantasy. That's it's basically an elementary fantasy series for idiots.
@@blacknwhitecookie8967 Yeah, I haven’t read any of the dude’s books or anything, so I can’t say, I don’t really tend to read a person’s book if they’re already a youtuber, and especially one with a fairly large following. But yeah, I think I remember him saying something along those lines about the series, I’ve since read the first 7 books in the series and I’ve come to enjoy it fairly well. It’s not perfect by any means, but certainly not bad at all when it comes to high fantasy series, and I certainly wouldn’t come away with the conclusion that Daniel did. I’ve read the Game of Thrones books as well, and while GOT might be a bit more complex than SOT, I still would put SOT up there with GOT in terms of fantasy. Granted, I haven’t read a ton of high fantasy, so maybe once I have I might change my mind about the SOT series, but as of right now I think it’s quite decent.
Great review! :)
Enjoyed the review. I have been reading the sword of truth series since it came out. I enjoyed the series and have real negative feeling for only 2 books in the series. Wizards first rule was a great introduction to the series for me.
I know you were a music major because of that Vivaldi axiom :)
Eragon? Only got to the second book but I heard it was a star wars rip off
I enjoyed the show as well even tho I read all the books first it was good for what it was
Erin Gauthier, if you're interested, my wife and I are doing reviews for the Legend of the Seeker show. We've gone through the first season and will be starting this second season this Thursday. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the videos!
I'm glad you enjoyed the TV series but I hated it because it deviated too much from the book. Terry Goodkind aslo regretted what was done to The sword of Truth series.
I could not disagree more with this review. The book seemed very pretentious and preachy and contrived.
I hear that a lot about the preachy part and I don’t get it. Are they just opposite views to you so it’s feels preachy?
Michael McGee no. Your opinion is different than mine, but I didn’t find you preachy, so I don’t think it’s an issue of difference of opinion turning me into an arrogant jerk. To give you an example of something I strongly dislike about the novels, we’ll go with how a war wizard’s magic works. It’s based off a need. When he truly needs his power it will come out and guide him almost flawlessly through whatever trial he’s encountering. It’s a convenient plot device to make him central and important, and I never feel like he’s going to fail. That’s a real problem. Man wears heavy plate plot armor
I see what you mean, but things do seem to get pretty grim for him, but does that not happen a lot in fantasy? Harry Potter is a good example of conveniences. I just want to understand the criticism of this book b/c I loved it so much I read it twice. I do understand he simplicity of things as far as the magic and characters but I think that’s what I like about it. I’m trying to get into wheel of time but sometimes the complicating of things is a turn off for me. Plus the very descriptive dialogue. I struggle with Ann Rice in this regard.
Michael McGee honestly I think my criticism is with the series as a whole and not so much the first book. I liked the first book enough to read the whole series and there were parts I genuinely enjoyed. Faith of the fallen was the book where I was thumping my head against a wall. It was like he was channeling the spirit of ayn rand and some of it seemed like a manifesto. I enjoyed how he developed Nicci sort of, but most of the women in the books seem to end up wanting to melt into richard’s lap and that’s kind of boring too. Richard is too perfect. Goodkind even says he only writes about characters that uphold his idea for humanity because flawed characters or someone who doesn’t serve as a paragon for what humanity should be in his eyes aren’t worth writing about. I’ve watched a lot of his interviews and he comes across as a pretentious asshole, and I can hear it in the voice of faith of the fallen in particular. I don’t dislike characters because I don’t like their political views. I can’t say I approve of rose bolton and Walter Frey in the red wedding if you’ve ever read a song of ice and fire, but man was that a savage political move that made me fear those villains. I love characters with depth. I feel that a lot of the characters Goodkind writes are one dimensional, or at least that other aspects of their personality are kind of weak or tacked on to make them seem like they have depth. It’s hard to go in depth in a UA-cam comment, but I’m a nerd that likes arguing, so here I am.
And yeah, the wheel of time does have a lot of filler sometimes. There were also characters I dreaded hitting a POV with, like egwene in particular. Not because she was poorly written or one dimensional though, I just didn’t like her as a person. Robert Jordan put a lot of religion into his books. You can see similarities and correlations everywhere to religions in our world. I’m not a very religious person but overall I loved that series, lord of chaos being my favorite I think. Try and stick with it if you can, it ramps up in the next couple books. There are slogs in the middle, but I’d say the series is worth reading in its entirety
Awesome review
