  • Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said he cannot accept ending war in Gaza now because it would keep Hamas in power.

    His remarks come as Hamas officials held a second day of ceasefire talks with Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Cairo, where one of the main sticking points appeared to be whether any deal would be temporary or permanent. Netanyahu said: 'Surrendering to the demands of Hamas would be a terrible defeat for the State of Israel. It will be a huge victory for Hamas, for Iran, for the entire axis of evil'.
