Oh dude I still have old EG backgrounds from their player signing media packages, crazy how they went from helping Greg transition outta esports and have a normal life to what they did to their League squad.
Ah yes, buy a thing you have no idea about, fire everyone who is the soul of the thing you just bought, rebrand everything so you make sure to erase your entire legacy, then wonder why it sucks. How these people managed to even graduate is beyond me.
Richard Lewis said it best , eSports team is run better by the people who love video games not business corporate who are in it to make money . two best examples are G2 and Falcon . G2 started during ocolete peak LoL career and he build the org to what it is today while Falcon just buy their way in and getting no results at all
From the business/corporate perspective both alternatives mostly suck. There are some exceptions, but those are rarely looking for a new majority share investments. If the org was profitable and just needed money, they would take debt instead, not give up control and majority of the future profits. So it should not be suprising that they ALWAYS change something. The decision to buy is a bet on the changes they aim to make, specifically on the change in revenue they cause. The business people want to see something like Astralis is a huge cultural force in Denmark, with licensing deals and partners across all areas of life. They also own the Blast events. Just being a good esports team does not get you there. You also need the ways to actualise the value of your brand. Business connections and licensing deals, not just sponsors on shirt and merc for fans. Few exceptions for selling are team owners cashing out or looking for partners with specific expertise or connections. There the team on sale would probably be quite healthy and profitable, and the buyer would not change much if anything. Few exceptions for buying also exist. Cultural reason like Saudis, who are doing national PR, and personal reasons as in rich people who just want to own a sports team as a kind of really expensive hobby. They also would feel less need to change things.

If they had been able to retain old guard in advisory or management positions (Fear, ppd) then maybe it could have turned out differently.
The reason why EG was able to support top-level academy rosters in lol and val was because they employed the right people that believed in their young talent, being Peter Dun and Potter respectively. They didnt have that in CS, rather they actively neglected all of their CSGO divisions and kept cycling through a mishmash of players with zero structure or coherence in mind. All this management group ever did was take credit for their coaches and players' accomplishments only to immediately start cutting all of their teams at the first sign of backlash. Really sad to see
there was a rule on EG, if you wanted to join, you needed to win a major tournament. then they broke that rule with the new CEO, thinking new talent without experience and basically farming them to be successful was a good idea, oh boy was she wrong. she was CEO first time in eSports without any experience, and got lucky when EG got Tarik into the lineup to win first tournament, then they never got any titles afterwards.

How does a CEO not understand the importance of branding. The EG emblem was iconic, it’s up there with like optic, faze, Tsm. And we know this because they just changed it back lol
I like how, in a story specifically about being irrelevant in esports, their dip in to rocket league was SO insignificant that it didn't even get a mention.
eg’s “blueprint” strategy actually worked so well in valorant that in the pacific region, around 11 teams have now signed addition academy rosters to perform a similar function

meanwhile on the dota side they eviscerated their TI winning roster in favor of a bunch of european mercenaries while still competing as "NA" despite having one player from NA, and never won a major event then dumped that roster for a full south american roster then disappeared forever
I don't know much about CSGO but I am a Dota frog. I watched EG lift the aegis by winning TI5 and after that, it all went down-hill. Currently, they don't even have a roster in Dota 2, the game which originally made them huge.
blueprint project was like the ONLY reason they won champs last year in valorant, and then not only did they decide to blow up the original champions winning roster, they got rid of their blueprint project. Explain to me how that makes ANY SENSE
I love how never hiring anything from Ivy League college would probably have saved 30% of the lossses in american economy by sheer increase of intelligence.
I think a good thing to mention about the Valorant part would be that after winning champs 4 out of the 5 players on their starting roster would leave and they placed 9th (out of 11) in their region in the following season, not qualifying for a single international event, and, at the end of that season their final Champs winning player would leave with his announcement video for his new team being the team breaking him out of "contract jail"
They did do one thing right though. They sponsored some truly talented people in the Fighting Game Community. Most of them still incredibly active and doing well thankfully.
Never forget EG wanted to buy Hooxi and even offered him more money then G2 did but bro said "Nah playing with Niko and a young superstar awper is better then the bag" Bro made the best choice in his career in that moment
Slight correction at 1:24. Once upon a time in 2013, EG acquired CLGEU's roster in EU LCS. This was a pretty good move since it was an iconic and beloved roster that was one of the best in the world the previous year and was in danger of splitting up because CLG couldn't field orgs in separate regions anymore. They failed to make Worlds that year, but were the fourth best team in Europe so still looking good. They decided to move back to NA and actually qualified for NA LCS. They weren't good after losing their main star player Froggen, but two of the NA players they fielded actually went on have really good careers. They decided to sell their LCS spot in 2015 and I have to imagine they made a profit since this was right before player salaries became super inflated and when the value of a spot started skyrocketing. In other words, despite the initial EG in LoL experiment being over in two years and not actually winning anything, the actual org still very likely came out in good shape and could always make another attempt at getting into LoL later. Little did we know how incompetently the new management would attempt to do that...

Oh dude I still have old EG backgrounds from their player signing media packages, crazy how they went from helping Greg transition outta esports and have a normal life to what they did to their League squad.
I swear whenever you hear the words "private equity" in a story you just know something really fucking bad is about to happen
The EG logo looks like "RAID SHADOW LEGENDS"
Ah yes, buy a thing you have no idea about, fire everyone who is the soul of the thing you just bought, rebrand everything so you make sure to erase your entire legacy, then wonder why it sucks. How these people managed to even graduate is beyond me.
That brief fade to the sponsor at 13:25, brilliant
You say this as Falcons are completely dominating Dota 2 right now but ok.
@@Absolute_Zero7he is talking as an org. G2 accomplished so much more to your Falcons. Also Falcons are just new to the Dota2 scene. I wouldn’t say dominating
@@Ori-zx3dq Well what exactly do you define as doing well as an org?
@@Absolute_Zero7 you tell me.
I really hate what they did to Danny in LoL they killed a prodigy before it could have shine, I hate that organization with a passion.
At least we got Massu now, man is living the life Danny should've got
Danny was decent but not prodigy level. Stop revising history
@@Reingoat Danny in 2 years had half the penta kills doublelift got in 10 years...
He was on track to be the best adc in NA.
You are the one revision history lmao
@@colin5197doublelift was never that good. More often than not, he would be the catalyst to his team losing due to some beyond stupid decision making.
@manporo5865 So doublelift isn't the NA goat anymore?
Lmao when did this happen and who is it now?
EG, OG, NIP: the holy trinity of teams wasting time and money for fun
Let it be known EG was the only team that the main character of NA CS stew joined and didn’t win a trophy with.
Even funnier it can be argued even with all the drama in that roster...they were better than any of egs future rosters
@@matthiasfoo1217Not a high bar there
@ true...just thought it was funny that what was basically a dysfunctional team did better
also stewie was a fucking dumbster fire after the team liquid gs
@@matthiasfoo1217 when you think about that, that is truly one of the lowest moments ever in e-sports. an aging, dysfunctional stewie/autimatic and co. roster with tension and mismanagement all around was somehow better than anything they fielded prior to.
Someone comparing the new Evil Geniuses logo to the Epic Games logo was hilarious
Private Equity buyouts specifically almost never work out across multiple industries. Squeezing brands for profit and when their plans don’t work they dump them.
If they had been able to retain old guard in advisory or management positions (Fear, ppd) then maybe it could have turned out differently.
capitalism moment
@@eyeamstrongest can you call it capitalism when you entrust your ventures to narcisistic egotists with no sense of competent business?
Her twitter account was so hilarious. She just kept taking Ls and kept trying not to take accountability afterwards.
Your skin looks so clean this video, good job on taking care of it
I’ve been working a lot on it Ty :)
@@PhyFPS keep up the good content love it whilst eating dinner
The Tarik missed shots on balc Overpass hurts my soul not only because of the missed shots, but because it was SO. FUCKING. BIG BRAIN. Like, the dude was about to make an absolute fucking all time 200 IQ highlight... Then he pulled the trigger...
he missed on purpose?
something id like to add about danny is that he was an insane talent, said to be the second coming of legendary NA ADC players, just to have it taken away from him and us by corporate greed
You can't expect a company that saw no value in someone like Geoff iNcontrol Robinson to become anything else but an utter failure.
How does a CEO not understand the importance of branding. The EG emblem was iconic, it’s up there with like optic, faze, Tsm. And we know this because they just changed it back lol
They only see dollars signs. You can see how they often destroy companies for cash and move on
Because they thought they could do better branding. It was their way or the highway.
The moral of the story is they need to re-build a new CSGO team called Skeleton Crew.
youre vids are so high quality. I love long format video essay videos and getting ones about the game i spent 1500 of my childhood are a treat
7:40 I was like “huh where have I heard this music before.” Then it hit me.
Should I open it… or should I keep it sealed?!
7:21 OH NO OH NO YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT IT SEALED
I had to do a double back to understand.
I understood that reference lol
I like how, in a story specifically about being irrelevant in esports, their dip in to rocket league was SO insignificant that it didn't even get a mention.
eg’s “blueprint” strategy actually worked so well in valorant that in the pacific region, around 11 teams have now signed addition academy rosters to perform a similar function
Rip justin. Even in FPS documentary. Evo moment 37 is mention
It's like they saw the NY Jets and thought what if we did that but in video games?
BIG PRIVATE EQUITY FIRM .... That was the death nail. It was obvious if you've been paying attention to anything for the last 50 years
Even in a barely related video, Justin is catching strays.
Me when a big corp goes tricked into esports for profit:
"Hehehe. Oh. You were being serious. Here, let me laugh even harder ROFL"
Private equity takeover is like the reverse Midas touch.
"the guy who got daigo parried" YOU CAN'T DO HIM LIKE THAT MAN THAT'S JUST CRUEL LMAO
the blueprint project is the first real world example of trickle-down economics
Thank you for reminding me that I'm lucky to not be working in esports anymore!
went from a logo to an advertisement
LaPoint was really the LeBron of bad esports ceos
Double negative, my friend. She was the Michael Jordan of being dogshit at her job.
lol my guy showed Star Wars as an example of a "niche" brand
i still dont know how your 'only' on 31k subs, seriously some of the best CS Esports content on the platform.
Effort and views don't necessarily go hand in hand.
Oh.. I forgot this 4 team experiment was a thing.. Why oh why did you have to remind me of it?
The fact that jwong is called "the guy who got parries by daigo" even in other esports is the reason he become the wazzler. You guys created a monster.
EG winning Champs in Valorant was the biggest W for them ever and then they decided to throw it all away by lowering their salaries, it's pretty unbelievable how bad their business decisions are
As a fan of a team who they defeated (PRX), this hurts so much after knowing they messed up so badly right after they won Champions.
@@n_core as a prx fan (sg pride) the only team that is allowed to throw this hard is prx themselves
I could imagine the shock those players had lol
Imagine being a literal nobody prior and winning Champs, then they offer a LOWER salary pay, actually insane. Wish Potter could leave that org
@@enashimo poor potter literally built the ultimate team and got it shattered by a dumb org

this man’s videos are always masterpieces and yet they still get even better every time. bravo
your writing is so high quality. i love the video length too, when some of my other favorite creators post its hard to drop everything and watch but honestly this is just peak youtube.
What's funny is they were the first org to create a 10 man roster in Valorant as well and somehow that actually worked wonders for them
Moral of the story, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I love how Justin sneaks his way into a CS video. What a legendary moment 😂
The scope of the video was about EG as a whole just to end up focusing on CS and saying a bunch of things unrelated to the team
14:38 happens to the best of us
Changing the Evil Geniuses logo is like changing Twitter's logo to something like, I don't know, a random letter with no brand recognition
meanwhile on the dota side they eviscerated their TI winning roster in favor of a bunch of european mercenaries while still competing as "NA" despite having one player from NA, and never won a major event then dumped that roster for a full south american roster then disappeared forever
O yea let me give my money to investment fund , hope it will make me nice retirement stash.
Ohh they purchased esport team?
... aaaand it's gone !!!
I love how never hiring anything from Ivy League college would probably have saved 30% of the lossses in american economy by sheer increase of intelligence.
*video reach the logo part*: "it cant be that bad"
eVil...
Oh my god...
19:34: Oh look, the subject of your very first video
9 time EVO World Champion
Its still pissed people off on what they did to Danny in league lcs, kid was a star on the rise
0:30 oh my god the nostalgia
Fear, Aui, Sumail, Universe, PPD
Brings a tear to my eyes
Never forget EG wanted to buy Hooxi and even offered him more money then G2 did but bro said "Nah playing with Niko and a young superstar awper is better then the bag" Bro made the best choice in his career in that moment
what a cool thing to be able to reference your own casting during a nice composed video! Nice!
Their valorant roster was something special man, really sad to see them fumble after all those highs 😢
1:59 And here I was looking at the thumbnail thinking "How did Valkyrae ruin EG along with 100 thieves?"
They got the Evil part down, but forgot about the Geniuses half.
its not only gaming, terrible leadership sink any company or corporation and it happen more and more these days even in public transport where i am working
The music at minute 7 is the "should i open it, or should i keep it sealed?!" song that he guy uses 😂
5:40 "Overall i feel the spread of Evil Genius had a lot of variety but not enough substance, I'm putting this Death Row meal in the B tier.👇🏻👇🏻"
