People died around this area, fools from out of town, lack of control, excess speeds, etc. losing heads in helmets, head on crashes, you name it. That's partly the cause of the lowered limits. Locals aren't as likely to smash, because they know the roads and their dangers.
The reason for the reduced speed limit is to make bikers , who we are told to think about, think, and stop killing themselves all over our lovely countryside! If every biker slowed just a bit, more would live to an older age and, and be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside. As an ex biker and now car driver I despair over the number of times I see bikers with complete disregard for the rules and other road users just do ‘their thing’. Although I'm guilty of barrelling up and down the Horseshoe at 60-70mph speeds in the past decades, I can see the positive side of the 40mph speed limit. You get to see more of what's going on around you instead of that intense focus you need at higher speeds. IMO sometimes a speed limit isn't all bad.
I believe the Horseshoe pass is about 4miles long in which case the difference in time required to drive over at 40mph compared to the previous legal limit of 60mph is only two minutes so what’s the problem, it’s only two extra minutes for Gods sake how is that going to affect your life? The problem is bikers wanting to go over it at ridiculous speeds , just chill and enjoy the scenery.
If you can't understand something done by politicians, look at the outcome and you will have the reason. The Welsh Labour government does not want you driving or riding a motor vehicle. From the comments on here they have succeeded as so many say they will not drive or ride in Wales again. Job done!
At last, a comment telling it how it is. I strongly suspect the number of bike crashes coupled with the reckless abandon more than just a few ride with is the reasoning behind this. As usual it is a few who spoil it for the majority.
There is no way the is compliant as being a 40 mph speed limit in countryside with virtually zero frontal development and I work as a Traffic Engineer. It is intended to put off motorcyclists using this road so they will go elsewhere and they will succeed. Another case of nimbys getting their way because they want this area all to themselves.
It's just my opinion, but The roads were perfectly safe for competent and speed compliant riders beforehand. You will always get idiots ruining it for the majority. The day I recorded this, I witnessed numerous Hot hatches driving like complete idiots with their brains in their feet. As a former Police Traffic Officer, now retired, I can only suspect this is another money making exercise. I do not use Welsh Roads as a Race Track, simply to enjoy motorcycling as my hobby. Ride safe one and all.
I believe the noise of open exhausts have a lot to do with this. I ride a bike but don't use a loud exhaust. I live in the sticks and know what it like to endure the screaming exhausts. I don't think anyone with loud exhaust as any right to complain about stupidly low speed limits when they have only them selves to blame . Years ago when not so many bikes on roads you hardly saw a speed camera, police, or sill speed limit s.
@@lesfletcher2473 I ride a BMW R1200RT with stock exhaust. I'm certainly not a noise or speed merchant. I fully agree that it is the few who spoil it for the rest of us. There is nothing on the Horseshooe Pass except the Ponderosa and sheep, neither of which should be bothered by noise. I firmly believe this is just another money making exercise. For those who ride sensibly there is no danger. For those who drive/ride like idiots, all the speed limits in the world won't deter them.
The only way to end this attack of freedoms is to vote them out. Labour didn't say in their manifesto that they would have a blanket 20mph limit throughout the country. You've been conned by Drakeford.
It doesnt surprise me at all. There are people in this country who dont have any spark of adventure or imagination and those people have found themselves hobbies which dont actually cost them much in terms of money or specialist knowledge or skill or ability or imagination . In this case they found a hobby of "spoiling somebody elses party " They have lowered the speed limit in order to "heroically" save lives and save the planet and make the world a better place for future generations and of course to make their mark on other peoples existence.
Maybe because it's not the height of summer but more atmosphere on the moon than at the ponderosa in this video, ive not been there for a few years but it was always buzzing back then , jam packed with loads of sports bikes and gungho riders from near and far, times have changed and not for the better , i guess weve all got older and wiser and sports bikes replaced with tourers and adventure bikes,.draconion speed limits are the final nail in the coffin for many riders,.sad,.
Alot of these speed reductions, are to try and keep more from accidents. As so many are killed or badly injured from driving \ riding at stupid speeds, Wales being rather high in RTC from bad driving / riding.
But all bike riders don't adhere to the limit (just read some of the comments above). I suspect a few idiots have thus ruined it for the decent majority.
Unfortunately, it's people completely ignoring the previous 60 mph limit and doing 70-80-90 plus that has caused this. when will the arse in the air sport bike riders ever learn 🤔
It's a shame but it's the world we live in today, to many idiot's out on the roads & not justice bikers . Seems like alot of road user's have forgotten how to drive / ride . The days of enjoyable biking is few & far between. And don't get me started on load exhausts .
Sadly, this nonsense is likely to become much more common. So called “progressive” councils across Europe embrace the principles of Scandinavian road safety organisation Vision Zero (nothing to do with “Net Zero”) whose aim is in their name, zero road deaths, which in their view can only be achieved by dramatically slashing speed limits (and alarmingly for us, discouraging and ultimately phasing out, motorcycle use). If you’ve riding in Europe in recent years you will have noticed that many 90kph roads are now 70 and 50 and the national speed limits in France and Belgium have been reduced from 90 to 80 kph. Labour and the Lib Dem’s are signed up to Vision Zero and their councils fully embrace it. The 20mph blanket urban limit in Wales is also inspired by VZ. Since May’s local elections are likely to result in a lot more councils being run by progressives, unfortunately a lot more national limits are going to be 40mph roads in the next few years. It’s crazy, but they’re not listening and are determined to do it. It’s not helped by people using noisy exhausts and being too public about breaking the existing limit, as complaints by locals about “noisy, speeding bikers” (and drivers) are giving councils the excuse to do what they’ve done on the Hordeshoe (and incidentally the scenic B500 in the Black Forest in Germany which is now 50kph). Stealth is definitely the way to go.
It’s getting quite ridiculous? These modern machines are designed to go quickly, and emit less pollutants, but, making them go slower, increases the emissions. And it’s all so utterly pointless, in the first place? It’s big brother!

The problem is bikers wanting to go over it at ridiculous speeds , just chill and enjoy the scenery.
vote Labour and this what you get, Starmer said he going to use Wales as a blueprint for England
Keep voting Tory and see what you get.
Most of the roads in this area are now ridiculous on speed limits and th A roads are covered with average speed cameras. SOME areas its a kin joke!
It's probably put in place because of people speeding? Those that see this? Know who are guilty of this?
Make an elastic cover to go over your number plate
I use a shower cap.
If you can't understand something done by politicians, look at the outcome and you will have the reason. The Welsh Labour government does not want you driving or riding a motor vehicle. From the comments on here they have succeeded as so many say they will not drive or ride in Wales again. Job done!
Inevitable really as majority of bike riders ambition exceeds their ability. I'm a bike racer and road rider but most bikes go way too fast. Sorry.
@@lesfletcher2473nothing wrong with loud exhausts you snowflake
The only way to end this attack of freedoms is to vote them out. Labour didn't say in their manifesto that they would have a blanket 20mph limit throughout the country. You've been conned by Drakeford.
Complete and utter tosh, and abuse of decisive power.
It doesnt surprise me at all. There are people in this country who dont have any spark of adventure or imagination and those people have found themselves hobbies which dont actually cost them much in terms of money or specialist knowledge or skill or ability or imagination . In this case they found a hobby of "spoiling somebody elses party " They have lowered the speed limit in order to "heroically" save lives and save the planet and make the world a better place for future generations and of course to make their mark on other peoples existence.
hasnt everybody got the message thay dont want us in wales i think its breacon thats going to start testing the new noise meter soon
Just ride in first gear at high revs. The noise will drive the nimbys scatty.
What a waste. If ever there was a road waiting to be "ridden", that looks like it. Never ridden it myself, don't think I'd bother now. Stay safe bud
I’m probably going to sell my super duke in spring .
Just stick to track riding before they band that .
Alot of these speed reductions, are to try and keep more from accidents. As so many are killed or badly injured from driving \ riding at stupid speeds, Wales being rather high in RTC from bad driving / riding.
I'm afraid the Nobheads are in charge of making the rules. You don't need to look any further than the mayor of West Midlands. 🤦♂️
I was told the speed limit changed because a biker had a accident and died 🤷♂️
Car drivers have died on many occasions! Did they change the limit then? No, bikers are the excuse they need to
never ride that road anyway, as its where plod hangs out trying to justify their expensive shinny toys!!!!
Their toys have shins??
Seems normal on a 125. 😅
lol.....love it, and true.
In Andalusia it's 20 kilometers that's about 12 mph anywhere there footpaths it's ridiculous the cats walk faster 😂😂😂😂😂👍🦊
What a load of drivel !
Motorcyclists never obeyed the 60 mph limit so why would anyone expected them to stick to the 40 mph!?
40mph is political regime overkill. No where near enough dwellings to warrant it. 50 mph would be acceptable.
But all bike riders don't adhere to the limit (just read some of the comments above). I suspect a few idiots have thus ruined it for the decent majority.
What's the point of a 40mph road sign when there is no speed control? Sod it and take your own speed.
You get to better admire the countryside views now :)
I've stopped going to North Wales on the bike. There's no fun in watching your speedo all day long.
Haha all that money on bikes, tyres, tax, riding gear, insurance just to pootle at 40mph 😂😂 only in Britain
This is how they plan to get the milage out of electric bikes, restrict all the good roads 40 or less 😂
Unfortunately, it's people completely ignoring the previous 60 mph limit and doing 70-80-90 plus that has caused this.
when will the arse in the air sport bike riders ever learn 🤔
Quite agree, they've spoilt it for everyone
Rubbish, if that were the case it would only be 40 on Sundays !!
The be honest the people of Wales voted Labour in. If there’s an election this year vote them out
And get the Tories in? Look at what they have done to the whole of the UK.
It's a shame but it's the world we live in today, to many idiot's out on the roads & not justice bikers . Seems like alot of road user's have forgotten how to drive / ride . The days of enjoyable biking is few & far between. And don't get me started on load exhausts .
Loud exhsusts make car drivers notice you 👍
oh dear... try it on a moped instead..
I won't be going to Wales this year, if fact all the bikers I know say they won't be going either, your loss Wales 🤔🤔 I will spend my money elsewhere.
Spring time sheep preservation
Fast,slow I don't care as long as I'm rading
Get a plate flipper fitted
Just think of the lives you just saved. All those people . Isnt it great.
i think it should be 25 all the way up to the ponderosa, you never know when a child will jump out Infront of u on that pass road.
More likely to be a sheep than a child on that road,.
I live locally and sorry you are talking utter rubbish
Our country belongs to us…. The government is our employee… we need to understand they do not rule us we rule them…
This is not a fast road so dont see the deal
40 mph is fair for the road conditions. If you want to speed better look somewhere else. At that speed now you really can appreciate the landscape.
Forgive me but exactly where in my post do I infer that I wish to speed or break the law?
It’s getting quite ridiculous? These modern machines are designed to go quickly, and emit less pollutants, but, making them go slower, increases the emissions. And it’s all so utterly pointless, in the first place? It’s big brother!
Come on all the bikers looking at this know, in their hearts, this is about speeding!. Mixture of "kids" and middle-aged men on superbikes tearing around thinking it's the Isle of Man TT track. It's the same between devils bridge and any of the connecting roads to Lancaster .... we have only got our fellow brother bikers to blame .... we are a minority that isn't particularly liked!
Boring Britain 😂 no smoking drinking fun ,even the weather's sh!t 😂
Quite right...... PUBLIC ROADS are not your playground to do with as-you-please luvvie!!
I used to call in at the Ponderosa most weekends, it was always busy. Now I won't go into wales, due to draconian speed limits I just take my money elsewhere...
