hearing problems is one thing, nobody ever talks about in this business! i’ve had tinitus since before i even started working as a sound man. luckily it did’t get much worse. being 55 now, my ear doctor just told me, my hearing was above average, but these tests only go up to 8khz. i know, that everything above 14khz just has gone.
i’m working for tv now, so nobody expects outstanding sound quality from me, but i hope my hearing stays good enough, until i will retire.
take care of your hearing as good as you can, a deaf sound engineer is as useless as a blind painter,

Great video - and thank you for being honest to talk about one of the taboos in the recording business.
I have severe tinnitus. I also some some hearing loss in the left ear around 4k. I get checked twice a year now, and know where to compensate if I need to.
Besides the obvious loud noises of guitar amps there are a few others which are worse: cymbal crashes, fire arms, airplanes, motorcycles, and even driving with your window open.

Wow! A fellow Bruxism sufferer! That's the name that my dentist gave it when I finally realised I had a night-time teeth grinding problem. Believe it or not, I woke up one morning having ground my teeth so fiercely that I had bits of broken tooth still in my mouth, and I could actually feel the sharp new wear on a couple of teeth. I've now worn dental guards for, oh, about 25 years. And I still have teeth!

As Pensado says, you should be able to take everything above 10k off a mix without disrupting its commercial viability. So mid-range hearing loss is important is super important to prevent, but high-frequency loss is relatively less impactful to your career when it comes to mixing/audio engineering (although still undesirable). Thanks for the video!

Continuing to work as a recording engineer with tinitus is also a challenge. One of the best recording engineers I ever worked with was deaf in one ear. He could sense phase problems better than anyone I ever knew.

@@RecordingStudioLoser I worked at the CBC for over 35 years and the engineer I mentioned was incredible. He based his stereo mixes on sight with the use of panning but could hear phase problems naturally by moving his one good ear gently from side to side in the mixing environment. His stereo and mono mixes sounded equally good do to his use of his disability in a positive way. He primarily worked in pop, jazz and blues but also did some folk and rock during his career with some very well known producers and musicians in the Vancouver BC music scene of the time. He retired in the late 90's early 2000's and is still living today although I don't believe he continued in audio after he retired.

OH MY GOD I have literally been going through this for months! this exact thing! My ENT decided to do injections in my ear which were painful and didn't help. He said I lost hearing in my ear due to covid. I have always taken care of my hearing so when I took a hearing test it was a shock to me that one ear was way stronger than the other. I have TMJ but every specialist i've gone too just says i have to massage it. My jaw is always in pain so this video came at a good time and makes me feel better knowing other people are going through the exact same thing.I don't do much engineering anymore. Mainly just playing in bands but i was a FOH and Monitor guy for a long time and did quite a bit of producing for people which I hope to get back into. Thanks for this video!

I like the "walk and talk" conversational format. I grind my teeth at night too and have the same type of bite guard. Fortunately never had that inflammation problem, it sounds really unnerving but is good info to have so thank you for sharing.
BTW for those Euro mic adapters they're so annoying to try loosening when they're in the clip, so I keep a dime handy to unscrew it. Some of my stands are Euro thread so I have to use the adapters. A thick guitar pick can work too if it's not in too tight.

I almost didn't want to click this video because I think the title is baity. But I'm glad I did... I know that I grind my teeth in my sleep, but I didn't know that it could cause inflammation in the ear, I've definitely had that happen on more than one occasion... I know the title might get you more clicks, but, you ought to make it a bit clearer that the content of the video is about hearing. It's a subject that is often overlooked among audio engineers, oddly enough, since everyone is always going on about "use your ears" - very few mention that you should take care of your ears...

I once lost the top end in one ear and also remember noticing the shower noise change. I think it got down to 1 - 2k roll off. Needless to say I was pretty scared. Turned out it was a build up of ear wax (even with regular cleaning) and the doctor flushed my ear out with a cartoony looking big plastic syringe. Instant hi-fi, beautiful sound! I have TMJ too, caused by bad alignment of my teeth (my dentist always said I didn't need braces because my teeth look fine, but I did need them). I suffered from tinnitus and hiperacusia for several months, which meant I couldn't even have a conversation without hurting my ears and unfortunately the doctors didn't figure out what it was on time and I still have some tinnitus. My ears appear to be perfect condition though. There was a point my tinnitus was so noisy I honestly thought of taking my life if it didn't go away in a few months and all caused by TMJ. I had to remove my molars and have a guard made too. That experience was one of the most difficult experiences in my life (mentally) because I couldn't do anything without hurting my ears and I felt I wouldnt be able to make music again.

Not hearing related but I used to suffer from migraines and had them my whole adult life. My doctors seemed to punt on the issue when asked. One day I'm at the dentist and mention it to him. He asked a few questions then suggested I look into the possibility that I had a middle turbinate issue in my sinuses. Turns out mine were malformed and would easily become inflamed, causing debilitating headaches where I couldn't stand even small amounts of light or sound. So I'll say it, dentists are awesome.

A turbinate reduction was suggested but I found little in the way of follow up studies years on. The reduction is also known to sometimes cause loss in smell and taste sensitivity. I like to cook and didn't like the trade off. Treatment, while not a temporary solution was the best bet for my case. I opted for saline nasal rinsing on a regular basis. It keeps things clean and the sensitive tissue from getting inflamed. Still get the occasional headache but have a system in place that I can use to prevent it from getting out of control.

Great video Jeremey thank you for the honesty. I recently started to suffer from SEVERE allergies. We bought a house recently as well, in the woods (I was previously in NYC) and it has made it so much worse! I have trouble hearing almost half of the year. My nose gets so clogged then in turn my ears start closing up and I lose the ability to judge high-end properly. So, now I pretty much religiously take Sudafed and clean my nose out a few times a day (sorry that's kind of gross). I remember how scared I was tho when I first started noticing that it was happening. I was very worried my job was going to be over. I have learned to live with it for the most part at this point but it can still be scary sometimes. I have also learned that when it's really bad it's best to just be honest with my clients. I tell them what's going on and to keep an ear out when I send mixes. They always appreciate the transparency.

I am a completely in the box mixer and most of my learning has come from multi tracks Ive gotten off the internet. While I'm pretty confident in my mixing skills at this point the tracking side is....iffy. I recorded a friends acoustic a while back and when I got in the mix I found all kinds of stuff I should have caught that I just didn't have the knowledge to listen for because Ive not done much tracking.I know how to treat them room to get good vocal takes but thats pretty much it.
