I had never really looked at the background of the original. Ive seen her face so many times and had no idea there was even scenery behind her! baffled. great job loved the video
The things that are throwing me off the most about your version is definitely the cool colours and her facial features. Other than that, I'm highly impressed. No one could ever look at your painting and not know what it is supposed to be. And even though there's a difference between yours and the original background, it actually blows my mind how well you remembered and executed that part. Even though I've seen the Mona Lisa many times, I still think I wouldn't have known what to do with the background, if someone asked me to paint it from memory. You're truly an amazing artist, and you keep proving it time and time again.
Drawing/painting a portrait without reference and only by memory is VERY DIFFICULT! You did amazing, it certainly gives the Mona Lisa vibe instantly 👏👏👏👏
You showed the Mona Lisa at the beginning of the video and I IMMEDIATELY forgot what it looked like 😂 The background was so tricky coz it’s kinda something you never think about unless you do so intentionally. I also started wondering halfway through the vid if her hands were in the right orientation but it was honestly a 50/50 😂 very impressive work from memory and entertaining to watch! Please do more 😁
Josiah, have you considered painting her the way she originally was painted? We now know that she wasnt painted in yellowy-earthy colors, she was colorful, but faded after centuries
@@CeraRalaz You're right that the current colours do not represent what she used to look like but she didn't actually fade though. The colours are still there, occluded by the heavily oxidized layers of varnish.
This video kind of shows how much better your art is when you use references, it would be interesting to see jazz paint the same painting with references just for the comparison.
The subtlety of the expression matches so well. I'm impressed (even without the eye bags). Also, I did not realize the Mona Lisa had a veil until right now. I always thought the weird line thing was a circlet.
I've seen pictures of the Mona Lisa done by Da Vinci's students at the time. They have been cleaned, which they'd never take a chance of damaging the real one. Those are much more colourful, and to make it look like the real one would take a wash over the painting to make it look like centuries of dirt and grime to get the colours we know. Good job though
They do conservation on Mona Lisa. This was probably a conscious decision as the original would be far more toward colder tones which is not in the public’s perception. People might perceive it a bad conservation and a damaged image, while in reality that’s a good conservation practice. The yellowing of the varnish is not how the original artist intended or would’ve seen his painting. Mind you, they have excellent conservationists that can easily do this without causing damage to the original, it’s a matter of applying science/chemistry.
I remembered the actual background as being MUCH darker than it really is and her clothes as being more brown. You did an AMAZING job of recreating a painting from memory. This video gets a 10 out of 10!
Crazy Impressive. When looking at your piece you can clearly tell it's the Mona Lisa. There is that thought that something is wrong, but you can't say what exactly. If anyone saw it they would be able to say without a doubt it's the Mona Lisa, and I think that makes your piece fantastic.
Great work! I’d love to see you go all out on a traditional art piece. A character, a landscape, whatever you feel most comfortable and fancy doing. No challenges, no restrictions, just full on a demonstration of all your talent. It would be incredible, since you pull out incredible pieces with restrictions and things. Just a thought!
In terms of recreating the Mona Lisa overall, before I saw the original, I would have said a 7, but after seeing the original I would go to 7.5-8. You are obviously more familiar with the painting than I am. However, I think you undersell your skills, Jazza. No one's da Vinci, but you have to separate style from technique. Your are so good at what you do and your content always brings smiles. Keep up the great work.
This kind of content is what I've been missing from your channel. Your recent videos have been amazing, genuine, and somehow nostalgic. Thank you for listening to yourself and to your community. Keep going, Jazza! :)
Your piece is definitely the Mona Lisa. There are some differences, colour pallet and face shape being primary among them from what I can see, but it's mainly nit picking. It could always be better, always be closer, but as a memory exercise, this is fantastic.
This was awesome! I’d love this to be a series! Could do the Sistine Chapel Ceiling or Van Gogh’s portrait. Maybe even sculpture too! Really good stuff!
I literally watched Da Vinci Code yesterday and they noted the horizon as well. I never noticed that before. I was surprised the same way when I found out years before that she doesn't have eyebrows
@@tinyblep9978 Nah. She had very thin eyebrows that got lost in restoration and with age. I checked after I got the first response on my comment. Would be funny to imagine the trend spreading to Leonardo tho xD
I love the interpretation that was created from memory. I would love to see other famous artworks be given this same treatment. I really noticed more about the Mona Lisa this way. I had never really paid attention to the background details before.
This is a great exercise actually. I do a variant of it from time to time, although just with drawings. First I draw a master study of some piece that I like, and then a day or so later I draw it again from memory. It's fascinating how I remember details as I draw them, that I wouldn't have remembered if someone just had asked me to describe the drawing.
When it's a day Jazza uploads, it's always a good day. Also, Amazing painting Jazza! That's a great portrait considering its painted completely from imagination!
I fell like I have the same opinion as Jazza’s his painting went to that uncanny valley where it feels like he got so much wrong but at the same time feels like he got everything almost spot on, truly is a interesting and unique feeling.
The fact you did that without reference is wild. I don't think people appreciate how difficult that is. I thought you got pretty close and then seeing her I was surprised how much was different. Yours looked so so accurate until I saw her and then suddenly she was nothing alike. Comparison and memory are such cool things xx
I think that you did a very good job on your painting considering that you based it off of memory and it had been 5yrs since you had seen the real painting in person. Well done JAZZA!!! Til next tyme...keep those cre8ive juices abrewing!!!
Amazing that you did this well FROM MEMORY!! I knew the colors were off-I was picturing a lot of warm browns. I did not at all remember that there were mountains behind her. I guess I only look at her, not the background. You're incredibly talented!! Now paint her while looking at her...
I've never seen it in person but the #1 thing I always remember about the Mona Lisa is that it's got that ochre color pallet, so color wise I would have given you a 5/10. Competition was like an 8/10, and expression maybe a 6.5/10. Over all, good job!
I couldn't work out what was different about this, apart from the trees untill I saw him next to it. Its him as the Mona Lisa? (once you see it you can't unsee it). Oh no someone just said it looked like golem, sorry 😅😂😂😂
Funny that you mentioned that. There's a theory that the Mona Lisa was actually a da Vinci self-portrait because of how similar she looked to da Vinci.
found yet another passive-aggressive asshole. the other person didn't understand your "simple joke" because it wasn't even a joke, you just quoted jazza's pronunciation.
I'm studying photography at the moment at RMIT and it's always been so beautiful to me that the Mona Lisa was painted in such a way that it almost feels photographic but has enough texture from the brush strokes to be recognised as a painting. Despite all the obvious differences and similarities that Jazza had, I knew that that factor would be the hardest to recreate because Da Vinci had a talent all on his own for how he painted, not necessarily what he painted. That being said, I was obviously really impressed with what Jazza did and I think it was such a hard thing to do that he actually did really well on
I suddenly realised, when your were sketching the hands, that they are a very distinct feature and that they actually made it the Mona Lisa for me. (Even though they were the other way around.) Well done
More than half a millennia after his death, an artist attempted to recreate one of his works from memory. A piece that has become treasured and a known entity the world over. This artist had to actively work to avoid seeing this original art piece since it has become so ubiquitous with the very concept with painting and art. In a few short hours, this recreation reached an audience of tens of thousands, spanning the entire globe. Leonardo da Vinci would be more than impressed. He would be in awe!
Wow this just goes to show how skilled DiVinci was. A REALLY REALLY high quality piece. It's a lot more noticeable next to your subpar-quality piece. The hands look so real. The robe/dress looks so real. The Mona Lisa is perfection.
I absolutely love this. You did an amazing job as always. Your talent is incredible. Seeing the pics side by side it made me think that the original was painted in summer and yours is the winter version!
My thought is you got her mouth done really well. It shows me how iconic that smile is because that’s the first thing you notice and focus on when you see the painting
You should have not shown us any pictures of the Mona Lisa during your video, so we could vote on it too. But, without the real thing being flashed on, I think you did an amazing job!
This was a really great watch! Loved seeing the process and also the reflection after the painting was done. Hearing your interpretation of the Mona Lisa as looking at our silliness nowadays is also neat! Would love to see more videos that include some well known painting (doesn't have to be the same premise of painting it from memory) and your interpretations of it.
As someone studying in the field of art and heritage, you did well on the composition and the overall recognisability. I'll just add that your flesh colours are a bit too flat and muddy. The painting originally would not have been as yellow as it is the heavy oxydation of the varnishes that give it this look. In order to keep the depth and vibrancy of your portraits, you can maybe try to do a grisaille or, in this case, a camaïeu (like a grisaille but with a colour like burnt umber). You can layer some coloured glacis on top of that. This really helps with keeping volumes and depth! But overall kudos to you, especially since it's not your domain of expertise!
I think your piece itself is really really impressive, i mean painting a portrait from memory, let alone in oil and have it be this close is remarkable. I feel like your piece is the lost portrait of Mona Lisas little sister who begged leonardo to draw her the same way as he drew her big sister.
It's interesting to actually see how memory sort of changes things and fills in the blanks. Like the details are hazy, but the basic setup is still the same. It's not exact but it's undeniably her. Excellently done.
I love the way you did the background! From memory is crazy. It was so fun watching also having only my memory, i definitely saw a lot more warm tones for her but yours is so cool!
I do this but with songs - I listen to the memory of a song I have heard thousands of times over the decades but this was before I taught myself to play drums, bass and guitar. So I on occasions for fun play those parts of the song without ever having played those parts of the song ever, but because I know those parts of the song because of knowing the song so well in my mind and now knowing those instruments and how to play them well, I challenge myself and play them first time with no tabs or without listening to the song but all from memory of the song and muscle memory of how to play the instruments - it works really well!
The reference image you show at the end is WRONG! It has a terrible yellow cast. If you compare the video footage, or any modern photo of the painting, it is not as yellow as that reference image. I see this reference pic a lot, and it annoys me, because it is very wrong, and gives people a false impression of the colours in the painting.
Considering there’s no way I’d ever get any part of it even close, you did a fantastic job from memory. I’d give you a 7 out of 10 overall. Very well done!!
@ 16:41 while i believe you are an amazing artist and i love what you do and love your content but your version looks like a 10 year old painted it compared to the the original but that's not saying your art is bad you art is amazing but a recreation from memory and placing them side by side just doesn't work if i hadn't seen the original i would have said you got in with a 8 out of 10 but only cuz i thought the face looked a little squished
Isn't there a theory on the mona lisa being one of the first Trans painting of his time and because no one knew who the picture was of they assumed it was a female?.
Intressting, i feel like you went for the main spot pretty well. and thank you for saying that she is not the best paint in the Louvre, their is so many stuning paint there.
This is so very, very lovely - your Mona Lisa has a character and a personality, just as much as the original does. I would say that I notice, in the original, that there is a barrier between the figure and the landscape: like the edge of a balcony or an open window looking out. Your Mona Lisa is outside, but I think Leonardo's is inside; there seems to be an arm rest for the lower arm, which allows for a certain relaxation of that resting arm and the one on top of it, and which also seems to direct the slight angling of the body. The shape of both heads is very close, that's really, really wonderful. I agree yours does look a little more "tired", but it could be that she sat for you after a hard, hot day. I like that you remembered the delicate tendrils of hair, and yes, the hair net. Very nice work, lovely.
The placement of the scenery in the background impressed me how much except color you got right on the general layout of it all from memory and I think that's impressive the river on yours is Skinner than the original I noticed but I like it and the amount you did get right is cool to
I think your version is very accurate! for me the biggest difference lies in the cool tones vs the warm tones, but i like how you even did the line of her sheer veil. overall I give it a 8/10
The reason we all remember the painting as being far more yellow than it currently is is because it was cleaned/restored a few years ago and that completely transformed it.
Voldemorty was the best description for your version of her face. Its like you were missing the details that you see when you push a finger into flesh. Concavity in the skin? Is that the word? Too flat? I feel like your background was like Bob Ross, letting the chaos of colors and paint strokes guide the imagination rather than the details that are deliberate in the Real Mona Lisa. And the colors were a little monotone when it came to her skin. I was actually surprised at how much detail went into the folds of the real Mona Lisa's clothing, the details of her hands, and her translucent head garment thing. I would say for an afternoon of painting and doing it solely from memory, I would give it a 7/10. If you had a weeks worth of time to work on the details even if you didn't make the same woman, just adding those small details, giving her depth, I would say 10/10.
This was such a fun challenge to watch! While I was watching you paint I thought her features had more sharpness to them- but seeing them side by side I'd say that only really applies to the nose? You did so great!
That's freaking incredible from memory, to get her likeness and pose and the background at all like I can't even do an accurate spongebob from memory and that's a simple cartoon I watched all the time
You did an incredible job. Congratulations Jazza. Your Mona Lisa is beautiful.❤ I like the colours you choose : it's much more vibrant than the original. And so I'm wondering what would have look like the Da Vinci's Mona Lisa when it was painted? Did the coloures fade over time? Does Da Vinci wanted it to be muted ? Anyway, what a silly (in a good way!) idea you had I love it! This video was perfect. I was really invested in it : Me at 6:53 : Her dress wasn't red ? Me from the begining to 11:30 : Where is the balcony? *waiting for the balcony confidently* Me at 11:12 : Is there a balcony? *does an Internet search with a bit of anxiety * Yeahhhhh ! I knew it, there is a balcony! Me at 12:18 : I want to judge it too! It's so funny. Me at 16:40 : I'm not an artist at all, but here's your score : Color score : 6/10 Your's is too cool. Composition score : 8/10 The balcony is missing!!🤣 Expression score : 9/10 You nailed it! Thank you for this moment of art. ❤ I'm wainting for an episode 2 with another famouse piece of art.
This is such a difficult project and you did a wonderful job! Most people wouldn't have gotten any farther than sketching a generic long-haired smiling woman.
I think this concept would make for a very fun series! Perhaps, with other iconic paintings you're not as familiar with, you can look at them for 1 to 5 minutes and then try to recreate them.
It feels like a “we got Mona Lisa at home” which I don’t mean in a negative way! Like you got the vibe and if you’d ask me I’d say “oh! you painted the Mona Lisa!”

So I on occasions for fun play those parts of the song without ever having played those parts of the song ever, but because I know those parts of the song because of knowing the song so well in my mind and now knowing those instruments and how to play them well, I challenge myself and play them first time with no tabs or without listening to the song but all from memory of the song and muscle memory of how to play the instruments - it works really well!
under one minute 🔥
Damn :(
Biggest accomplishment of your life!!! All downhill from here.

@@mavfan1thats probb true tho…
I love this concept! Super intriguing and you executed it very well!
Ok, it’s not good. I think your friends are scared to tell the truth. It’s a 3.
Give it a go yourself champ 👍👍👍
I have a feeling that you have made an older more tired variation of her, and placed her in a more dark gothic fantasy setting. Love it
@ 16:41 while i believe you are an amazing artist and i love what you do and love your content but your version looks like a 10 year old painted it compared to the the original but that's not saying your art is bad you art is amazing but a recreation from memory and placing them side by side just doesn't work if i hadn't seen the original i would have said you got in with a 8 out of 10 but only cuz i thought the face looked a little squished
Buddy no ten year old painting that 😂
@@SedricSardo i aint your buddy pal xD
Mind blowing! The smile is spot on ! Great job!
Isn't there a theory on the mona lisa being one of the first Trans painting of his time and because no one knew who the picture was of they assumed it was a female?.
Yeah right lol!
You surely remembered much more details for the drawing then I did. I would have failed in the first step already. Great job.
Ah, a nice jazza video, calmer with a little bit of strong energy from narration. It's really enjoyable
The placement of the scenery in the background impressed me how much except color you got right on the general layout of it all from memory and I think that's impressive the river on yours is Skinner than the original I noticed but I like it and the amount you did get right is cool to
What I like best about your videos is you make me wanna try it!
I don’t think there is a better painting. The detail captured is insane even washed out over the time.
I think your version is very accurate! for me the biggest difference lies in the cool tones vs the warm tones, but i like how you even did the line of her sheer veil. overall I give it a 8/10
My main takeaway from this is that this guy has lots of nice friends. 🤣
That's freaking incredible from memory, to get her likeness and pose and the background at all like I can't even do an accurate spongebob from memory and that's a simple cartoon I watched all the time
You did AMAZING! Thank you for the quality content=3
Don't be so hard on yourself, Jazza I think you did amazing , ✨️ 😊❤
Color: Low Points, Composition: High Points, Decent job all around!
I was really invested in it :
Me at 6:53 : Her dress wasn't red ?
Me from the begining to 11:30 : Where is the balcony? *waiting for the balcony confidently*
Me at 11:12 : Is there a balcony? *does an Internet search with a bit of anxiety * Yeahhhhh ! I knew it, there is a balcony!
Me at 12:18 : I want to judge it too! It's so funny.
Me at 16:40 : I'm not an artist at all, but here's your score :
Color score : 6/10 Your's is too cool.
Composition score : 8/10 The balcony is missing!!🤣
Expression score : 9/10 You nailed it!
Thank you for this moment of art. ❤ I'm wainting for an episode 2 with another famouse piece of art.
This is such a difficult project and you did a wonderful job! Most people wouldn't have gotten any farther than sketching a generic long-haired smiling woman.
Jazza…this…is…. Absolutely amazing!
I knew immediately that the hands were the wrong order! I've learned from all my time in animal crossing, that darn crazy Redd with his fake artworks.
7:25 it says a lot about me that my first association was "Morticia Addams"
Without perfect recall, this has to be EXTREMELY hard. Well done!
Awesome! I love your work and creativity! :)
So excited for the video jazza!!❤️❤️
i'm going to give this video a 10/10 just for the John Floreani shirt cameo
Amazing. A king of your craft. I bet DaVinci would try really hard to collab with you were he alive today. ❤
Honestly for someone who doesn't really do realism so to speak, this is really great! Super cool idea
