  • We have our first tears and it only took TWO EPISODES 😅😭 So, that's a bit worrying!
But, I also got a chance to ramble about trauma and deep dive into character's psyche and it's only episode two, so that was exciting lol

If you go back to the Pilot around 55mins into the episode when Olivia visits Massive Dynamic for the first time, during the location establishing shot you can see a picture of a pen and a rose in the foreground. This is in reference to the serial killer and his father in this episode who have the surname ‘Penrose’. Every episode has one of these Easter eggs/clues hinting towards the events of the next episode in the series.

It obviously taps in heavily with that vein that X-Files tapped into for sure, they certainly don't try to hide it. There's an overarching narrative that's stronger than the one in xfiles that you're not really getting hints of yet, but it's an amazing story. This show has some of my all time favourite TV characters - for sure Walter is the greatest ever, and I love Astrid to bits. Show is JJ Abrams' mystery box incarnate though, it's gonna blow your mind, and I suspect make you cry - and laugh - a lot.

While I enjoy "The X-Files", it did get kind of tiring seen a lot of the top people in the FBI getting in the way of Mulder and Scully investigation.
In "Fringe" it's quite the opposite. Even when Walter gives some of his crazy explanations, while they may hesitate a bit, they trust Olivia's judgment and get things done

I love th X-Files and grew up w it and consider it iconic, many classic eps, but Fringe's overall plotting kills it. And kills the rest of the Abrams shows. Fringe has one of the great mytharcs and payoffs in all of television. Plots within plots and they managed to hold it all together.

just started watching but i saw one of the automatically suggested video below this that you've at least (almost) finished season 1, so you may know this by now, but the glyphs you see at the end of each portion of the show (aka before the commercial break) are letters and spell out words that either have to do with the episode or hint at the next one. anyway i'm super happy i decided to try and find a fringe react video i've previously watched and that you popped up

32:13 THE SECRET COMMITEE it is a dud!
As mentioned on the Commentaries of my FRINGE DVD collection, in the Pilot and the early epiosedes the writers had exprerimented with a couple of angles they later on droped for the good of the show. This has been one of those. Same with Peter´s Mobster Connection when his old flame advised him to leave Boston forever to never come back.

Ha! Fringe Friday! I love it. I didn't really get into this show for a while when it first aired. Fringe is a good example of a show that balances procedural elements with an ongoing narrative. That isn’t always easy.

    • @georgial6398
      @georgial6398 3 роки тому +7

It becomes increasingly 'serialized' (meaning long form plots) as it goes on, but it never altogether abandons procedural elements. Still, the plot circumstances and the nature of the world, story and situation change so radically by subsequent seasons that it was pretty much impossible for a newbie to jump in and get full enjoyment out of it. Which is why it had trouble at the time getting new viewers. But it's paid off greatly for those who watch the show from the start.

To answer your question last episode regarding how people feel about broyles? He's one of those characters I think will grow on you. I was like you first episode. I couldn't stand him for most it, warmed to him a little when he asked Olivia to join his team, and then grew suspicious of what John said to Olivia at the end. But for some reason I had this persistent mistrust of John too the whole episode, not just after he was revealed to be the "bad guy", and for some reason, like with Nina Sharp, I couldn't help thinking there was more to broyles and the suspicion the show was asking us to feel. By the opening scene of of episode 2, seeing behind the scenes broyles sticking up for his team and acknowledging Olivia's dedication, I was like nah he's one of the good guys. I'll never doubt him again.

I'm glad you caught the apple image at the end, for me its one of the most insane details in the entire show. Someone figured out that all those images used in the transitions were a cypher, they all stand for a different letter in the alphabet so each episode has its own hidden code word, usually a refrence to the episode itself. That apple with the yellow dot at the top right apparently stands for the letter D the "glyph code" for this episode was "CHILD"

I really like your commentary on our mental health care system (or unsystem.) I'm looking at Walter's situation from three perspectives.
First, I have some serious Axis I diagnoses myself which went undiagnosed and untreated until I was in my 40s, and they caused all kinds of pain and chaos for me and the people in my life until they were under control. I have benefited tremendously from therapy, from psych meds, and from recovery programs.
Second, my wife and son have both been hospitalized as a result of psychiatric crises, and I am certain that at least three other family members were living with problems almost as challenging (two have died, one is still with us.)
Three, I got into the mental health field myself as a second career (my first career was in the Marine Corps), and I worked in settings including some inpatient treatment situations for both adolescents and adults. That's my basis for thinking I recognize some psychiatric patterns in a few of my relatives, including both my parents.
The most significant part of that second career was a total of four years I spent working as a psychotherapist in the state prison system, first for a year in a special housing unit that was an addiction treatment program, and then for three years in the forensic psychiatric hospital serving all the prisons in the state, housing the inmates with the most acute problems.
One piece of evidence of our system's inadequacy is that the prison psychiatric hospital where I worked is the biggest psychiatric treatment facility in the state. So all these people, who would probably not be in prison in the first place if they'd been able to get treatment, had to go to prison to get that treatment.
As far as quality of care is concerned, most of the staff in that prison psych hospital were actually pretty good. I had worked my way up to clinical supervisor before I was forced to retire completely after my car lost an argument with a semi in a rush hour freeway traffic pileup, and most of the therapists on staff were competent and caring - so were the nurses and most of the doctors, and the specially trained corrections officers who worked as psych techs.
However, they were still in prison, and that is a toxic environment. When someone is locked down long term in what amounts to solitary confinement as Walter was, in particular, it can mentally destabilize even a person who is mentally and emotionally healthy going in. There is a pattern called SHU (Special Housing Unit) Syndrome that many mental health professionals, myself included, think should make that kind of long term isolation illegal and designate it as a form of torture.
When I watch the way Walter's character is written and played, there's also an instant thought that if I met this person in real life, I would suspect that he was somewhere on the autism spectrum (as am I to a mild degree.) He looks like someone with what used to be called Asperger's until the DSM 5 came out, when they did away with the artificial and arbitrary division between Asperger's and autism and just called it the spectrum. Most of life's problems are really like that, more analog than digital.
Thanks for these reactions! I just started re-watching Fringe after having watched the entire series over a decade ago, and now that UA-cam and these reaction videos are a thing, I looked for reactions to Fringe and found your channel. Glad I did.

As they were in the hospital while Broyles said "...finally died from natural causes," they were passing a bald man in a dark suit standing at the hospital desk, which I hadn't noticed before in this episode until seeing your edit (5:09). There was also a flash of a bald man in a dark suit on the street in the previous episode. Looks like a Chekov's Gun to me.
Walter had a hand in a jar. Walter is a freaky hoot. Walter will come up with a lot of Trek-style technobabble, but he's funny about it.
The growing relationships between the central characters: Olivia, Walter, Peter, Astrid, Broyles, and how their backstories affect those relationships, are the real heart of the story, and it's going to be good. Every episode is not "monster of the week." In fact, it will move away from that theme in a few episodes.

i mean . . the monster of the week thing never truly goes away .. . but it isnt the whole show. . kinda like supernatural in that way. . . there are your monsters of the week, but theres also over arching stories that come and go. . . its actually a brilliant mix of the two

I'm sorry but posting specific spoiler prompts and pretending you didn't is really weak. Do not spoil this show for this girl. She'll get there when she gets there - in this case it's literally within a couple episodes of this, so why go out of your way to mention it?
And now I'm rereading your comment more carefully and you literally prompt her w spoilers for the entire show. What is wrong w you? Delete this. You're not being clever or cute or enhancing her enjoyment or experience, you're setting her up to have the show ruined for her if she reads your comment carefully and thinks about it. You are the worst. Let people experience the show for themselves the first time as you were allowed to do. You didn't have people dropping little prompts leading you to spoil the whole plot for yourself after you first saw this episode, did you? Then why do it to her?
