Amazing. Very inspiring! I saw in another comment that neighborhood children came to help and learn how to grow food which I think is amazing!! Also, the value of the home increased?! That's great! Thank you for sharing this video
This reminds me . There was a British sitcom comedy in the 1970s called the good life. A couple turns over their garden to growing vegetables, animals etc and hence to be more self sufficient. All the best..
I have done the same thing. My backyard is heavily forested. Only place to do our garden was the front. Luckily no HOA in my subdivision! Only thing we did different is we added a picket fence all the way around. It has worked out great!
this looks great! I have a similar set-up on a smaller scale and used pine for the boxes ... a few years later I'm having to replace that wood. good call on the cedar ... anything you'd recommend since you've been doing this a few years?
Lucky you guys can do whatever you want, not at where I live. They'll crack us for a life long if we do like you did. I mean HOA. Thank you for sharing.
I love it! Great idea for using space productively. I haven’t lived in a neighborhood in a long time. Curious if you’re neighbors were supportive? Thanks for sharing
Contrary to a lot of loud commenters on this thread :) the neighbors actually loved it. It became a bit of a community garden, the kids would help harvest and learn how things grew. And also happy to report it increased the value of the home substantially, affecting the entire neighborhood.
@@mrtkiernan Most communities where I live would look at it as an eye sore. Me? I'd embrace any neighbor who did that. I can't get the front yard garden, so I'm going to plant fruit trees instead. Well, that's my goal if the wife lets me. The back yard is for the dog and my fig trees. I only have a few though. I'm planning on putting raised beds way to the back out of the dog's running path for basically root vegetables. I'll have to put a cage over it to keep the squirrels, deer, raccoons, etc out of it.
I could do this where I live. Was considering putting a 4 foot wide box by 100 feet along the front of my property with a tasteful fence. We live on a busy street and want to shield it from the house a bit. I've never been interested in growing flowers; but have had a vegetable garden every year of my life.
Hey guys. Great job. We do these installs too. Can I ask how much something like this cost? And also what mix u guys use to fill beds??? Trying to find a perfect raised bed mix on a large/ commercial scale with no actual compost atm... 👌👌👌
No home owners Association here either. But city would fine . Always one neighbor that's a pain. I did this in my back yard neighbor complained and I got fined.
I also have want a to make a small home garden please, guide me about the soil type and that white powder you used and I mean how should I make a healthy soil?
Great work, I’m doing the same thing in a backyard but without the boxes, market garden style. What is the material you laid down on the ground for the long beds before you put the compost on top of it? Is that some type of weed stopper material?
It looks like cardboard to me! Yes, material like cardboard or newspaper is meant to choke out weeds and underlying grass, but also break down over time so that the roots of the plants in the garden bed are free to grow further downwards :).
This is normal in part of Europe where i live. We plant wines over the driveway for the shade for the car...trees that are planted in the garden are mostly fruit trees cherries, almonds, wallnuts, olives... and then there are vegetable beds....no lawns in our yards...just useful plants. Good work, though🙋♀️
+CrazyAZ Gardener For the fall we planted: Curly and dino Kale, arugula, broccoli, kohlrabi, beets, spinach, carrots, swiss chard, turnips, radishes, micro greens, cabbage, Romaine, red leaf. Closest to the house are the herbs and at the street lots of pollinators.
When we sold the house in 2018, it was in a multiple offer situation in less than 24 hours… 5 k over our asking price. The estimate for the house is now 44k higher 2 years later. So I'd say pretty good.
Are you still doing this in the front? You could have planted herbs, or even without wood raised beds, so it's not even noticeable. Planting low hedge around would have been even better.
Front yard not the best choice for planting, and no fence, animal will always come for bother your vege,I prefer plant back yard, but, whatever, your guys did awesome job
What about curb appeal. Do you think your neighbors would feel it brings there property value down? Wouldn't fruit trees be a better option for the front yard!
That is a very common question. I think you'd be surprised how receptive people were. What people want out of there yards is changing. They are also ways to maintain a vegetable garden that retain curb appeal. This garden actually increased the value of our home and when we sold it was a bidding war and it went for 5k over asking. The neighbors did not mind that at all. It also attracted a new type of buyer, younger families looking to take ownership of their food supply.
Yes increased value!!!!! Why would it decrease value?! Dang you sooo afraid of being unique? Custom stuff is always worth more. Plain vanilla cookie cutter lawns worth less
It was a approximately $3,500 that included: design, materials, soil/mulch/compost, seedlings, trees, berries, and labor. We hired a local organic farmer in our area.
Thanks for including the cost but adjusting for inflation and the recent election I should be able to do the same project in 2017 for somewhere in the neighborhood of $80,000 if I am lucky lol.
alphamale292 you could do it for free too! if you use found materials for the beds and build up the dirt over a longer period of time with various materials that decompose into soil (it might end up more rustic looking and take longer but could be great!)
I did mine for almost free and it looks professional. I used leftover spf lumber and put a membrane on the inside so it should last longer and canola oiled the outside. Got free Wood chips from an arborist and soil was a trade of a toolbox I had laying around for compost and topsoil delivered. Did all the work myself in 1 season and had a good harvest by fall. 4 5'x5' beds, 2 5'x8' beds, barrel planters, 15 5 gallon wicking buckets and about 200 SQFT of in ground beds using Ruth stout method. Gardening can be quite a bit of work from the beginning but over time pays off, even if my beds rot in 2 seasons I can still use them, they will just have more carbon.
Can someone please explain why it would be illegal to grow your own food? I am pretty confused as to reading these comments about HOA and the garden getting reported and everything. I am not from the US so this seems very strange to me. Why would it be anyone's business what I do with my front yard?
I agree 💯, the sad thing about the US is it is a land of contradictions and old ideas that never die. For instance, "freedom" or "individualism" is supposedly the most important thing, until you actually do something different. The very same Americans who say, "no big government better tell me what to do" will be the first to cry, "you better not grow anything but grass in your front yard" They usually say something uninformed about how the neighbors must be so mad or property values! They have a hard time accepting change or the concept that to some, their grass lawn in their front yard is ugly and a waste of space and resources.
Not in our neighborhood. Everyone was excited to have fresh veggie baskets and opportunities for the kids to learn about growing your own food. They were even happier when the property values went up after we sold the house for 5 k over the asking price within 24 hrs. Times are changing. Grass is out, gardens are in.
Obviously no Home Owners Association there! Lola! Great job!
Sends a great message .
Everyone should do this instead of wasting precious water to maintain an inedible lawn

I will never grow food in my front yard due to nefarious neighbors.
Sorry to hear that.
Same
I will never do it because my neighbors would never let me reach my front door. Plus I have a backyard.
Maybe you can try even just starting with pots.
Perhaps it is so large so that they can share with the neighbors!
THIS A BIG FRONT YARD! GOOD USE OF SPACE!

Must not have covenants. Very cool!
Correct! Hopefully if more people start valuing food over grass, HOA's and covenants will adapt.

Why did you get rid of the grass between the beds? Why not keep it?
At first we were going to leave it, but maintaining and mowing is too difficult in between beds, so we went with mulch.

Maybe sunlight
Why not? Why waste water on grass?
That's why I put my garden in my front yard, backyard gets too much shade from tall trees. My front yard gets full sun.
How did you get rid of the grass in the raised bed area?

Was that white powder you tossed on before the final compost layer , blood and bone or lime ?
I want to say organic fertilizer, but can't remember exactly.

What’s that white powder u put down?
I coulda used more growth time lapse - want to see those berries come up. Tour the veggies. You guys are just teases - you left me totally hanging.
What's the covering between the top soil and the organics you put in?
Landscaping paper
There was a point where you added white powder to all the beds. Was that pot ash?
Yeah, but we did not add it to the bed on the right side though. We planted blueberries there and they love more acidic soil.

why didn't you use the grass as mulch at the bottom of raised beds
Grass seeds making it in to the beds and creating more weeds:)

it's actually land scaping fabric and it's to keep the grass that was there from popping back up.

@Susan Moran exactly.
