As an Atlantic Canadian, I fully agree this should NOT be a regional thing. Everyone must heat their homes in a Canadian winter, and ALL taxes should be taken off heating fuel. It’s as important in Canada as food is. This divisive garbage helps no one.
Seconded, as another Atlantic Canadian. I don't like the precedent of treating Canadians differently depending on which region they live. Western Canada provinces, who fund the federal government out of proportion to Atlantic provinces, are right to be dissatisfied.
Thank you as a Albertan I am tired of the division and hatred promoted by the federal Liberals.

As somebody born, raised, and currently living in the Maritimes, I think that conservative leaders in the Atlantic Provinces have a great opportunity to stand in unity with the Premiers of other provinces to send a clear message to Ottawa about regional fairness.

Totally agreed. Carbon Tax is imposed on Canadian citizens without any vote or consultation. How the money collected and spent is not transparent. How much has the tax really reduced carbon emissions every year. On top of that, carbon tax increases periodically and it has becoming a big chunk of expenses for every household especially in B.C.

Natural gas produces 30% fewer emissions than heating oil imported from Saudi Arabia, yet it is taxed more heavily. This is a backwards environmental policy. Maybe I should heat with oil.

The interviewer is slim in her knowledge. The carbon tax is 12¢ per cubic metre of natural gas versus 17¢ per litre of heating oil. The discrepancy in the numbers is because burning one litte of heating oil supplies significantly more heat energy than burning one cubic metre of natural gas. The different numbers are calculated taking these chemical properties of the different heat sources into account. The two different numbers actually equate to the same cost per unit of heat energy of the two different heat sources. The carbon tax amount per joule of heat energy is the same for Atlantic Canada as it is for western Canada so the Atlantic provinces are not being unfairly disadvantaged in their heating oil prices and anyone stating this is lieing through their teeth.

It's time all the premiers stop carbon tax in all provinces
3:20, Atlantic Canada pays more tax on heating oil than natural gas. Since that is the case the Trudeau should have reduced the tax to match natural gas VS stopping it. Oil was charged more because it was worse for the environment. Now 40% of the east coast homes are being charged nothing, one can only hope that they don’t get the refund cheques for the next 3 years.

The Supreme Court already said that the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act(GGPPA) passes the threshold test because Greenhouse Gas(GHG) emissions is a critical response to an existential threat to human life in Canada and around the world, and warrants consideration as a possible matter of national concern. Which is why the minimum national standards of GHG price stringency, because the GHG are a specific and precisely identifiable type of pollutant.
How can GHG be an existential threat to human life in Canada, if the Liberals can just change the minimum pricing to zero for 3 years, when the entire point is to reduce GHG emissions? The Supreme Court said that it had to be national, to establish a binding outcome-based minimum legal standard - a national GHG pricing floor, if they can just change the pricing floor? It's no longer a sufficiently stringent GHG pricing mechanism, because now it can undermine the efficacy of GHG pricing everywhere in Canada because of the risk of carbon leakage.
This sure does sound like "This irreversible harm would be felt across the country and would be borne disproportionality by vulnerable communities and regions in Canada" to me. Because Parliament is unable to constitutionally address the matter at a national level, because not all provinces use heating oil.
I'm no lawyer, but the Supreme Court case isn't written is tons of confusing legalese. So unless I'm missing something, it looks like the Liberals have done something wrong. There would have to be a clever loophole in the GGPPA, that lets the Liberals be a bunch of dicks, to defy the Supreme Court's ruling.
