Wildlife Photography: How to find wildlife to photograph. I made this video in response to a number of subscribers who asked me this question. I've split the video into 3 types of locations where you can photograph wildlife, with tips on each one. Above all, you need to learn about different habitats and what can be found there; learn about animal behaviour - and learn to spot the signs that are left behind. Think out of the box too, such as large gatherings and roosting sites. It's all a case of learning and getting out there - and taking your binoculars with you!

If you’re trying to target a particular bird, google their call/song and learn it. That will greatly increase your chance of getting a view/picture. Others knowledge as you said can be invaluable, sitting in a bird hide a few years ago got me an invite to see a Long Eared Owl 🦉

I love to watch and photographs birds in great outdoors! But even in personal garden it is good!

Good video Paul. I think the most important bit of advice was in the first 30 seconds. I spend a lot of time looking for shooting venues and always with binoculars, probably walking around and sometimes not even with my camera. Looking and listening and if I find say a barn owl nest or likely kingfisher perch I carry a OS map and mark the position. Also taking note of the sun direction time of day, season and prevailing wind. Sometimes wind direction is overlooked. One location I use is great for red kites and buzzards but they only show on a northerly wind as they can hover into the wind over the escarpment where I'll be sat. A southerly and the just don't show.
Brilliant. Wind direction is really important - I am paying much more attention to that.

All very good Paul :) Over here in Canada we don't have any particular restrictions on nests or specific bird types but we do have strong ethical practices, there are conservation laws to follow and abide. Personally I don't do bait, fixed hides, zoos, or game farms. I like my subjects entirely natural in their habitat. Besides the whole thing is meant to be an adventure experience in the wild savannah's, grasslands, carolina and boreal forest and vast Canadian hinterlands.. Hopefully in a few years I can get out to Alberta or British Columbia for Grizzly bear, and Big horn ram, and some mountain goat, wolves and elk too. Until then they're in my dreams.
Totally agree with your comment on baiting.
I'd argue that a fixed hide in a nature reserve still gives you the chance to observe and photograph species in there natural environments, and not everybody has the means to travel to proper wilderness areas. I live in the UK and as I'm reliant on public transport I have to rely on places with a train or bus within 5 miles, any further and carrying a full bag becomes way to heavy.
That being said I don't like the face that hides can restrict your composition etc
@@ajc1482 ... quick tip on carrying a full bag ... a light weight child's stroller makes for a very good caddy for your backpack. I've done that on occasion. Beats carrying it on your back. I usually only take my wildlife lens, and a lens maintaining kit, spare batteries and cards. I don't like to bring a whole arsenal of lens with me. 😊

Great hints. Funnily enough, I unknowingly started implementing them before you published the video. I asked you under one of your previous videos about where to spot white-tailed eagle in Poland. And guess what - turns out I happen to live in one of the most important breeding areas in the country, what's more: apparently there are like 4 white eagle couples within ca. 5 km of my town. Can you believe it? And the region also has the largest red kite population. It's like bird (of prey) paradise :D

Approach the farmer/landowner and politely ask permission, take a port folio perhaps to show what you do. Most farmers hate people climbing over their fences, leaving gates open etc, so a respectful birder/photographer may even get some help off a farmer telling you what’s about and where to find it.
Paul, I am new to your channel (found it by accident last night) - I am wholly impressed by your content. There is superb information in your videos imho. I've followed a few other nature photography channels in the past and I've always been disappointed as they seem to be more about "look at me how good I am" or the gear than offering genuine advice to different levels of photographers.
I'm slowly working my way through your channel content (it'll probably take me weeks lol). Thank you for providing this content to others. I'm by no means very good with imaging birds, but I do enjoy birds and I am obviously a photography enthusiast (my area of speciality is macro imaging of Insects & Arachnids). I have a question on the 1Dx but will post that on the 1Dx video later on.

@@PaulMiguelPhotography I popped a question about the 1Dx over on your 1Dx video. I'm not working atm, so not in a place to afford a used 1Dx, it'd be a long term project, by which time, I hope the price would have come down to the point where either the 1Dx is cheaper or I can afford a 1Dx II lol!
All good points Paul. As an addition for what it is worth, when wanting to photograph a particular bird type I'll also look up its annual cycle. Different birds migrate and return, breed, fledge etc at different times of the year often based on latitude and temperature. Knowing when they are 'likely' to be more active and potentially abundant can save a lot of wasted time and effort when that species is effectively 'out of season'! Multiple sources such as Collins etc are available :)
