I was at this race. I remember everyone cheering when Schumacher went off. A few minutes later we were told over the Tannoy that he'd broken both legs. Everyone went deadly silent at that announcement. People will cheer a dominant driver making a mistake. No one was cheering anyone getting injured.
I was sat with my brother at Stowe corner and the TV picture doesn't do the accident any justice. Seeing it actually haopen the car came screaming in very fast and was quite frightening to see. Some people initially cheered, probably McLaren fans pleased that Schumacher was out of the race, but quickly silence enveloped the grandstand apart from the loudspeaker blaring out the track commentary. Being sat behind the area where he crashed it was not possible to see him try to get out of the car and for a while it was very worrying but fortunately only a broken leg.
Despite Schumacher out for the majority of 1999, Häkkinen seemed to make heavy weather of his chances to win his 2nd world title... Monza & Nurburgring prime examples!
True, but Irvine was making mistakes/poor performances himself. Also it didnt help Mika's season that David hit him in Austria, ruining his chances to win that race while Irvine took the win there and then for whateever reason they let David win in Spa instead of giving the team order and let Mika win. So that season his teammate/team didnt do best enough job/support for him either. But granted Mika's own mistakes in Imola and Monza were the most costly ones he made.
Brands Hatch has ups and downs and lots of greenery. It's a much more scenic track. Silverstone was an airfield which makes it flat and rather boring. However over the years the track owners have spent hundreds of millions on the facilities which include a National and International layout each with their own pit garages and it's said that the medical centre could do heart transplants if necessary.
I remember this race, I remember thinking at the time when I heard the commentators talking about possible leg injury "well that's a little early to be jumping to conclusions", even though it was a hard crash. Little did I know how right they were. I forgot which leg he broke or if it was both or what, it was so long ago, or even how long it took him to recover but yeah I remember watching that race live, that crash is one of the moments in the sport I vividly remember.
Due to bad information, the press room originally thought Schumacher had died when he thundered into that tyre wall. Note the class of Murray Walker to rebuke fans cheering the crash. He initially ended up in a regular NHS ward, next to an old lady that didn't know who he was.
I remember watching this, will have been 13 at the time and I cheered when Schumacher crashed but inly because he was out of the race. I suspect many of those fans cheering at the circuit were the same. They wont have been cheering when it looked like he was injured.
How unfortunate for Schumi’s brake to say ‘I’ve had enough’ down hangar straight and cause his accident breaking his leg. This was the moment that ultimately robbed Michael of the 1999 world championship.
Ferrari claim it was a rear brake failure that sent Michael off at Stowe on Lap 1. With all the lying they did that season, I don't know what to believe.
@ciaronsmith4995 it does seem strange maybe he just stabbed them too hard when the red flag came out because the McLaren's slowed abruptly while he was going for the pass.
Schumacher’s accident demotivated Hakkinen so much, Hakkinen nearly lost the championship. 1999 season really had it all. No other season ever has, and never will, unfold the way it did.

12:46 Murray’s unhappy little sound he makes as he sees the medical crew around Schuey’s car ☹️
Those fans cheering when Michael crashed weren’t cheering for the next five seasons after this 👌🏻
Think they knew this at the time and enjoyed their moment.
Than start cheering again when the "sir woke take a knee for nonsense" start to race
It all stems back to the Schumacher-Hill rivalry
@ Hill was and still is a basic bitch compared to Michael 💁🏼♂️
As a West Country boy, I remember enjoying seeing that Trowbridge recovery vehicle collecting Michael's car!
7:07 - 😂
Never found out why myself!
maybe he's in the WC.
23:11 Ambulance getting in a lap time lol
Lucky it didn't go too wide and get its time deleted and a 5 second time penalty

That accident was so disappointing, after Schumacher had built the team for three years and was sure to win in 1999.
Despite Schumacher out for the majority of 1999, Häkkinen seemed to make heavy weather of his chances to win his 2nd world title...

Very true, made many mistakes in '99 but he also had many car failures as well, the team were making mistakes too.
Yes, Irvine wasn't up to winning. Barichello would have won.

6:31 "Eat your heart out Brands Hatch" 😂

How embarrassing for Ron being seen in watching the start of the race in the Benetton garage.
What was he doing in there? Very unusual!
Apparently Charlie Whiting accidentally hit the red flag button instead of opening the pit lane button

I never heard that
interesting whats the source?
@ honestly search David brown, senna…
And you’ll find it. Can’t remember exactly
I didn't heard that as cheering from my TV as soon I knew MS was alright other his legs broken. Millions in the UK was probably like me....

Not often does an athlete return from a major injury and come back at an even higher level

I watched this race live
rolling for staying up
This was my first ever British Grand Prix i saw at Silverstone live i stood just the start line hoping to see Michael win didn't go well did it

I believe it was brake failure, maybe I'll dig out my old autosport mag and see what they say. Why did the red flag come out before his accident?
@@scarsurfing They claim it was brake failure. But I just don't believe that. He locked both wheels...
@@scarsurfing Red flag was because cars were stalled on the grid mate! Can't risk that not being cleared before the pack comes around.
@ciaronsmith4995 it does seem strange maybe he just stabbed them too hard when the red flag came out because the McLaren's slowed abruptly while he was going for the pass.
He locked the wheels because his brakes failed. Jesus Christ you have the worst takes

1999 season really had it all. No other season ever has, and never will, unfold the way it did.
I think it actually made Mika more nervous because it was looking he might lose the title even with Michael not being there.....
Neh, Hakkinen just continued to have his '99 run of ridiculous misfortune, nothing to do with Schumacher's absence.
Not yet. I suspect 2027 season will be the same.
1999 was very good, but i guess 2003 and 2012 werent Bad at all.
Very toxic the british fans.
They cheered when Schumacher crashed and cheered when Verstappen got almost killed by fighting the title with Hamilton
