Caravanserai, my #1 Santana's album. In that record the whole band was nothing less than A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and supremely inspired and Shrieve played his best ever. For those who don't know that masterpiece, do yourself a BIG favour: get it.
Michael Shrieve is one of the greatest. What makes him so great and unique is his ability to write such deep and dimensionally complex instrumental songs as Every Step of the Way. It has always been one of my favorites, certainly in my personal Top 10. Peace and blessings to Michael. He is a jewel in the oceans of music.
Another wonderful collection of Michael's and Carlos's work is on Santana Welcome. I don't know how many people remember that album. I have it on CD and it is also one of my favorites.
Every time I think I've just seen the best drummer in the world, I always come back to Mike Shrieve. Been a fan since 1969. He goes to places other drummers only dream about. What an original talent. This is simply MAGNIFICENT. Wow. This band is just incredible. I'm so inspired. 5 stars!
Sounds very different to original. Original is very energetic and intense whereas this one has a slightly more sophisticated, jazzy feel to it. Love both versions. Although I have to say that nothing beats listening to Caravanserai in its entirety then just as you think it's over this song starts playing. Words can't describe... You are a very talented man, Mike.
THis was also a Santana song on the 1972 "Caravanserai" album. It was done again Live on the Santana "Lotus" album in 1974. Old rockers have longevity and something to teach the next generation of drummers.
Jealous that Seattle has such great access to one of the most accomplished musicians of our time. SidFoxy did an outstanding job on filming and capturing the essense of what Michael and his band are playing and feeling.
His name is included on the alumni "Wall of Fame" at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Redwood City, California. He is an alumnus of Junípero Serra High School (San Mateo, California). In 1967/68 he attended the College of San Mateo, California; learned to read sheet music and played in the school's jazz band.
This is fabulous! I rate Santana's 'Caravanserai ' album highly which Michael Shrieve played on and co-produced, which closes with 'Every Step of the Way'. It's great to see that this track is still being performed.
It's an amazing thrill to have this band playing every monday night at 10 PM at Tost in the Fremont section of Seattle. The band is Michael Shrieve on drums (played on the first nine Santana albums including Woodstock), Danny Godinez on guitar who imitates no one, John Frickhe on elecric muted trumpet which adds a fresh sound to the music, Farko Dusamov, the best electric bassist since Jaco and Joe Doria on keyboards.Danny is one of the most original guitarists I have heard in years.
Michael Shrieve the awesome'st Rock-Latin Drummer :)born 6.July 1949 in San Francisco:) forever simply unforgettably ! thank you very much for posting SidFoxy !!!
This track has remained afavourite of mine for decades. This iis a great interpretation because it's the essence of live work and great filming as someone said before me. Also, the guitar isdoing his own take on soloing. Fabulous. Jeff Makor
There is Stomu Yamashtas "Go Project" with Al Dimeola and Steve Winwood. And The "Automatic Man" Cds All great cds. If you can get your hands on "Giants" a rare LP on far out records. You'd be one of the chosen few. Lol! :{D
@flammaster : Where did you get your info he was in any drum and bugel corps? Interesting I've never heard that. He is self taught drummer, was a prodigy in learning the rudiments, just as Gregg Rolie is self taught on the keys. That's what made these guys so amazing. Let me know any other info please!
because he playing music, not only trying to became a star, it`s 2 different things, when you playing good music and trying 2 be a star... Sorry for my bad english...
Friend, Hope you are still out there. I know I am replying to your post of 13 years ago but I had the immense privilege of seeing both, here in London: I retain the ticket stubs - Automatic Man was freaking awesome, Marquee Club Friday 16th July 1976 and Go, was a bit disjointed as all thrown together supergroups usually are but was still VERY good, Royal Albert Hall Sat 29th May 1976.
It's nice to see Michael still doing what he does best. Outstanding drummer. The best of the best. Every Step Of The Way has always been one my favoirte Santana songs, however after listening to the Lotus version all these years... this one just doesn't quite do it for me.
How do you know who I'm friends with! Mike Shrieve had a white macbook! And an iMac at home he has a nice drum set! Cooper Shrieve is a real kid! Maybe your jealous. I have Coopers phone number! He has an iPhone! You don't know anything about me!

Micheal wrote this one which imo happens to be one of the 2 best songs from Santana's finest era (72-74) the other being Flame-Sky.
cool cool coooool

Love the sound, similar a bit to the original Santana, which I loved.
SHRIEVES, ROLLIE, 2011

I miss TosT
because he playing music, not only trying to became a star, it`s 2 different things, when you playing good music and trying 2 be a star... Sorry for my bad english...
He needs to be playing with Carlos...NOW
carlos never fired a member of the band.

FARKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why ain't he with Santana T_T
+7
automatic man was his attempt at stardom; just my $.02...
nope I feel empty inside. Does not have the power from the Caravanserai album.

it's an amazing song, but this version is no where close to the original.
@BanditPolizzi because santana sings shit mainstream music today
