You should add a bit lubrication to lubricate the moving part (piston) so the piston do'nt stuck when its going so long and reduce the heat

In case you forgot asking this question and never know what it's for. The valves are to stop air from intake stroke getting back out to atmosphere on up/compression stroke. And prevent compressed air (higher than atmospheric pressure) escaping on the down/intake stroke.
