- Katrina devastated Six Flags New Orleans Abandoned Park New Orleans under water levee breaks abandoned
August 29, 2005
Now that time, along with legal issues ect have long past. Aniversary of Katrina aproaching. I decided to display these photos publicly. Some have been viewed privately by park and coaster enthusiast. The thing with these photos is, I actually belonged there, and let those in that were allowed, and kept those out who were not. Basically I took on Security in my last days working the park. Another thing you will notice is the lack of vandalism and tagging as these are taken not long after we were able to enter the park. Unfortunately trespassers, vandals and some urban explorers tend to just make more destruction of the already devastated park.
I have spent the last few days binge watching all the Six Flags New Orleans Park videos and started to wonder what it must have looked like before the weathering after the storm had passed and the vandalism; curious about how much damage the storm itself had done and this video answered all of that! Great video, wonderful music and such a sad sad story!
Great video. So very sad to watch. What a nice park and a terrible loss. I love that you can see the park and not see all the graffiti and vandalism.
While it is sad to see the damage, its nice to see how much of the park was actually damaged by the hurricane itself and not by vandalism or decaying.
yes
The park opened as Jazzland in 2000, but it fell into financial despair in two seasons. Six Flags took over the lease in 2002 and renamed it to Six Flags New Orleans a year later. In August 2005, the park was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and never reopened after that month.
I like how the merry go round was torn up completely by Katrina but those big shades above the paths are just sitting there like nothing happened😅
now that ride has no horses no panels everything got vandalized
I don't know why I've developed such an intrigue with deserted amusement parks. I think I've been thinking a lot about my old Six Flags that was kinda ripped away intentionally. Astroworld was closed in October '05, thinking it had a lot to do with financial issues especially after this loss on Six Flags' end. Such a shame as it really did nothing but take away potential revenue - they pretty much scrapped by even by demolishing and selling the property.
This video though is truly remarkable. I know it was a devastating loss but every other footage I've managed to come across is so tainted by graffiti and vandalism. It's like you captured your own time capsule that exposes all the damage dealt by just Katrina. Thank you for sharing such a glimpse. It's just such a shame that Six Flags didn't own up to it and at least try to help clear some of it out (aside from the working rides they moved).
I share the same sentiments. I find abandoned amusement parks extremely fascinating. If I may give you my thoughts on both my interest and yours, I've theorized it was the fact that at one point there were teenagers and children on those rides, in those shops, walking those paths. I believe it's the fact people heard "Have a good ride on The Jester hereee at Six Flags New Orleans, Infinite Fun (or whatever the tagline was)." I do wish you reply bc I'd like to hear what you think of this.

I agree, a lot of the bittersweet feels that motivate me to seek stuff like this out is based on the innocence that once was. I can't say any theme park is perfect, once you age you really start to see imperfections like rundown rides and litter from a park being understaffed etc. But small children don't see all that. To them it's something new and exciting and adventurous. When you experience that new feeling as a kid you don't ever want it to change. You want it to stay that way so that others can come experience it after you and so that you can share it with friends, family, and maybe even children of your own someday. That obviously won't be happening here and it's just such a shame that the place was just left to rot.
angrydango you make a good point about the children see it how they want to see it and that they don't want it to change, you actually perfectly explained my mindset. I've made comments on commercials and such related to Six Flags focusing on how if a child went to this place in say 03, thankfully survived Katrina, then 9 years later sees their park in shambles, it would hurt quite a bit. This was his/her park that they went to, and now it's completely destroyed. I go by the mindset of get what you can before you lose it, and I feel this could apply to any abandoned building. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Dang you Katrina for taking away happiness and Fun from the Louisiana natives, It is so sad to see this place in ruins. And there's no chance to rebuild either.
Screw you Katrina.
The park probably would've been purged anyways like astroworld if the hurricane didn't happen
It's so sad to see a place like this one. It was so full of life. Used to create joy, fun, and smiles, not lie in ruins disintegrate in rust. Katrina sure took her wrath out on this park,
true :''( why does someone wants to be like this at a park that was full of joy and people why world why are there so mean people in the world to do this i'm someone who likes amusement parks or theme parks even this one god really wanted to go there but i only was 5 and to afraid to go on rollercoasters :'(
this was done by a hurricane, the hurricane was not created by some person
To be fair, the park was struggling and six flags mightve closed it down soon anyways
i really appreciate you for uploading this. it gives me a nostalgic feeling of when i went the summer of 2005. from recent videos, people have vandalized it so much that i don't get that reminiscent picture like i do from this video. i'd love to go and explore it, but unfortunately i hear it's on constant patrol.
Beautiful pictures. It's devastating to see a park this severely damaged.
Thanks for sharing. Have a lot of great memories there back to its opening day as Jazzland.
These photos do a great job of showing why Six Flags did not reopen the park... most of the rides were total write-off, every single building needed torn down or gutted and rebuilt, all of the assets (i.e. ovens, stoves in restaurant kitchens, computers in offices, etc) were completely ruined, infrastructure had significant damage, etc.
It would have essentially been starting over from scratch to reopen the park.
Thanks for sharing. I hope something replaces the park soon as it's an eyesore.
4:06 For those who wonder where the famous clown came from, it was at the east entrance of Pontchartrain Beach where Mega Zeph & Blaster/Slam is. Six Flags Over Georgia nearly suffered that same fate.
It was originally a part of Jazzland's set of Mardi Gras floats. They used to make small parades during the first few seasons. Once Six Flags took over, they cancelled them, but at least they saved that clown head, and they installed it in Pontchartrain Beach.
yep six flags over Georgia nearly had that fate in 2009
@owivictin4878Yup…
what a damn shame. I never got to go there except once when I was small. It looked like it still had hope in these pictures. It didn’t look as bad as it does now... Sad.
Working in the amusement park industry you develop a firm understanding of how precious rides really are and how easily they can be destroyed. This is devastating to me, I work for Cedar Fair Entertainment and a major manufacturer and this is just heartbreaking. I just wish C.F.E would invest in this and reopen it. Why let a storm take away from something so great?
A friend of mine worked at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg , Virginia for years & it was hard for her to see the park left behind. It's a shame it can't be fixed & reopened. It would give a lot of people jobs😢
These pics do make me wanna shed a tear. So sad to see a park suffer through this.
Wow, the music, reflect, the sadness of this destoryed park.
I remember riding those rides I miss that place so much it was loads of fun
So heartbreaking...Thank you for sharing these photos.
It's so sad seeing this park like this when you used to go to this place everyday as a kid it brings back so many good memories.
These had to be right after the storm hit nice video
From what I remember these were taken right as the park was drained and the photographer (who worked with the park before) was asked to examine the park and note all the damages done
at least sponge bob still stands
he’s gone and six flags employees put him in the warehouse where he’s decaying his nose fell off but he’s still there
Always so sad to see such a beautiful an amazing park, destroyed, and left abandoned for 15 years, like that, I never been to New Orleans, but when this park was opened I wanted to visit this park, and ride Mega Zeph, I heard it was one of the best wooden Rollercosters, at that time around, I hope someday, they will, get rid of all the debris, and rebuild at least Jazzland, back, would be very nice 😎
What an amazing group of photos!
Six Flags New Orleans is gone, and never will reopen. But it will live in our hearts, and also remembering Katrina and the lives it took.
In business terminology, usually for insurance, a 'total write-off' means that something is a total loss.
Meaning the ability, if even present, to rebuild and refurbish something would cost so much, it's more logical to buy a new one.
Zydeco Scream could've easily been relocated to another Six Flags park but I guess Six Flags was only able to salvage Batman, Bayou Blaster, Sonic Slam & Road Runner Express.
Batman was the least damaged from the storm due to its height from the ground so they were able to easily take that. Bayou Blaster, Sonic Slam and Road Runner Express they took because they had enough money to demolish and relocate those rides. They saw them as more profitable and left what they didn't want
They would've salvaged more but couldn't because of the lease agreement
I'd love to have copies of these photos and any other pictures you have. I've been into trying to understand the devastation Katrina left behind, especially Six Flags. Most photo's I have are photo's of the park with graffiti all over the place. I'd always wanted to see the park before it was vandalized. I would really appreciate it. :)
Your so lucky to see these some of the rides are not there now and it's filled with snakes and more!!
Thanks for sharing this video. It's nice to see it without graffiti everywhere. The water lines are unbelievable!! How long did it sit underwater?
Shame. Iv e developed a real fascination for this park. What it was like and the devastation that followed the hurricane. This is such a pity.
It is sad that this happened, and it is super sad that the city is so reluctant to let anything happen to the park. The city put a restraining order or Six Flags so they couldn't get any other rides from the park. And they keep shooting down every effort to reopen the park. They have only accepted one offer and that was to bulldoze the park and build a mall. Luckily that one fell through. And most recently there have been THREE offers to rebuild the park, all of them willing to pay more than the property is worth, but they all involve reopening the park and they keep shooting them down. Why do they not want this park to reopen?
almost 10 years later and its is sad to see this bring tears to my eyes.

15 years later now
What’s weird is this video was done right after it was drained and before the vandalism started, shame ppl have to destroy something, granted Mother Nature destroyed it first but everyone else should have left it alone. If you notice on the Ferris Wheel, all gondolas are present, but later videos there are a few missing, also the cars in the water ride are on the lift but in later videos they are not.
It would have been even weird if there was a. Camera mounted on top of one of those rides or a few and it could have shown a much closer picture of everything submerged under water.
It's crazy how people drive passed that on the highway everyday knowing that six flags ditched it
I don’t want the abandoned New Orleans six flags go
Make six flags New Orleans great again !!
lord i hate to see my favorite hometowns park like this its the only park we have
Great video! So sad to see it this way.
I really dont want them to demolish this park. I want it to stay for rebuild it, but i will be a urban explorer and hopefully go in here, with no damage to the park at ALL.
I think Six Flags could have easily invested in the park again to get it open, but the fact is that it wasn't a highly attended park. So, they just let it go, and left. It's sort of an excuse to get out of the contract. If that park was a Six Flags Over Texas, Magic Mountain, or Great America, you would see that park open as soon as they got a cleanup crew in there, & some maintenance.
They did same thing with Kentucky Kingdom. Oh, now Six Flags is bankrupt, and they they don't have honor lease
this made me cry :(
the bat mobile made me cry
Right me too 😞
Nature is slowly reclaiming it.
Nice video, i would pay for visiting this
Hope they still have the arcsde in there! Plan on going there this summer.. I hope the bat moblie is still there. I wanna see how bad Katrina hit
what is this song called?

I remember having the season pass
Compared to a lot of other abandoned/closed/ruined amusement parks on youtube, this park is in MINT condition. They really should have re-opened it...
Chianagirl Ahhhh. Thanks for the info!
Chianagirl Subbed back!
+kamryw927 It was going to cost too much to fix and try to reopen. That place is a lost cause. I think if Six Flags were to clear the land out and rebuild the park, it would be one of the top 5 amusement parks in the U.S. . Why do ask...think about it ...as much as people talk the park and "Illegally" wonder through the park, It's a monumental of a place since Katrina. People now know about the SFNO and want to go there.
michael brobston I agree
They could've fixed it up, but they decided that it wasn't worth the effort because it was their least profitable location and the flooding could just happen again due to its location.
Did the water cut the power circuits to the rides so they can not operate any more
It fried all the electricity in the park for about everything so they'd have to replace everything electrical for the rides and buildings
This is so sad. Wish they would fix it :(
I saw some of the roller coaster carts at six flags st. Louis under batman the ride. I don't know what roller coaster they were from but it said six flags new Orleans. :(
The carts were from the former wooden coaster "Mega Zeph"
Thats my home park, i'm going this October at the time making this, the cars are not underneath the ride anymore and were repurposed as spare trains for the Boss. Thats why all the Boss' trains have the Gerstlauer striping on the back, and they removed the front parts of each car, and replaced it what it looks like at the front, a fence just like a GCI train. But you know what the front of The Boss looks like probably.
GREAT PICTURES,I ENJOED YOUR PICTURE VIDEO, WOW LOT OF MONEY WENT TO SHAME
I don’t want the bumper cars to leave
I could see surprised Patrick going in a lot of these pictures
What happened to all the signage and props and statues, etc? Like that Batmobile, Spongebob statue, comic logos, carousel horses, and all the rest.. Did vandals end up taking stuff or were things like that removed before that happened?
A mix of both, some things were stolen or destroyed while others were taken to other Six Flags parks
You can download this park from planet coaster
It didn’t look that bad then but I have heard plans the site could be flattened by the end of 2019
zydeco scream has been demolished
Let’s protest
what is this song?
That's sad it's in poor condition
actually they didn't have enough money to restore it
Soo sad 😭😭😭😭😭😭
these pictures were taken in 2005?
Yes, just after the water was drained out the park and we went in. I think Nov or Dec 2005.
holy shit🤯🤯🤯i didn’t even think pictures existed of the park from 2005 in the immediate aftermath
did u work there?
@@alisonmcgregor2002 I think he did
@@alisonmcgregor2002 There were a few of us working to start the process of rebuilding. Sadly that did not happen. There were two different days I rode around the park and took photos. The photos of the park still flooded were taken by Director of maint and these by me. These are the only photos from that early in time as no one was allowed into the park but us.
could any of the rides still operate ?
No the only ride that was saved was batman and it was brought to the six flags in San Antonino Texas and was renamed Goliath
Oh and the drop towers they are at the great escape
thanks
I never knew Goliath was batman at six flags New Orleans wow
The drop towers went to the Great Escape. I live near there, and I go there yearly.
SpongeBob SquarePants the ride looks okay 0:20 2:17 #SpongeBob #abandoned
the inside wasn’t so good it was really bad the water damage was really bad I’ve seen photos of the gift shop around 2008 or 2007 somebody showed me the photos of the inside
6:20 how high was the water line?
Probably money in them old vending machines
Always sad to see an amusement park close, however, if Six Flags were to have reopened this park they would have been throwing good money after bad.
Made me cry
The insurance alone would stop a rebuild. This area is high risk property.
all good things must come to an end but personally i think they should demolish it. and leave it blank, although that might be hard ahaha with all the cement and such. wow.
Actually another theme park company is planning on buying it and refurbishing it
brayden harrington yep next spring of 2015
logan rich
there was one ride there that actually got saved it is that inverted one that used to be at new Orleans BUT now it is at six flags fiesta Texas called Goliath.
no i dont think so i think they should just leave it but it would be good if they could fix it up again... its just sad didnt know it was this bad and rip to the loved ones
I love to see the park rebuild on the six flags new orleans site
I don’t understand why they don’t rebuild the place because it’s just sitting there it shouldn’t be this way at all
Name of the song Pease!!!
what song is this it is just so beautfull
Ikr
so sad
My point is that even if they did have the money, it would have been a waste.
2014= 9 years old Six Flags New Orlean's dormat sleep
+Chianagirl make that 10 1/2
make that 13 and a half
Why they worked so hard on this then this happened :( damn u katrina
wait so right after the water was drained that clown head was fallen over but then in other more recent pictures it's standing up?
Someone moved the clown
Sad........ :((((
Song name?
what do you mean by total write-off? like what does that mean
Je trouve sa horrible :( perso je trouve sa dommage qu'il n'est pas au moins essayer de récupérer des manèges dessuite après l'ouragan passée ... Quelle gâchis de laisser un si beau parc pourrir au fils des année 😞
Who's gonna find the way to reopen Six Flags New Orleans?
Its so sad.. at least SpongeBob made it
Baby_Blue💖 Someone ended up stealing that Spongebob from the park. If you look at more recent photos from the park, it's nowhere to be seen..
party over people
this park reminds me of Chernobyl Modern Warfare Remastered plus this is sad to see I have a Six Flags here in IL sux that this has happened
What's the music?
it's all gone now
oh wait lol sorry i thought you meant they should have reopened it, i read things wrong sometimes
Six flags loss a lot of $$$ on this park and it was the same year that AstroWorld closed down....
Those 3 parks you mentioned actually make the chain money. SFNO did not since day one. Same for SFKK. If you where running a business with multiple locations and several where not making you any money, and actually costing you money to operate.
You'd close them the second you had a chance.
Looks eerily reminiscent of Chernobyl.
Why did it get abanned
Because of hurriance Katrina
The water from hirricane catrina damaged the rides leaving them unsafe and unusable because of the lack of electricity. It's sad to see it go but it will never be forgotten
YadiraLol it was a really bad storm and it got beyond repair
I'm glad we still got are six flags America go bmore
Six Flags America is like the Worst Six Flags park to Date. It competes with Cedar Fairs Smaller Parks like ValleyFair and Worlds of Fun. If your looking for a Thrill to Behold on the East Coast, go to Six Flags Great Adventure or CaroWinds
i play games ! our*
my local six flags…

I'm said and it just opened when it got abandoned curs u Katrina
Will it reopen
no it will not the sixflag company said they wouldn't but they managed to salvage 2 rides from the park
no it will not the sixflag company said they wouldn't but they managed to salvage 2 rides from the park
maggatoe
No
They could have rebuilt it bit by bit, coaster by coaster, but no, divide money amongst running parks only six flags sucks for that
www.wwltv.com/news/Baton-Rouge-company-submits-plan-to-redevelop-248674951.html They are trying to actually rebuild it but as Jazzland and not six flags.
