    These cabinets were originally designed as passive bipole speakers; when 2 sets of drivers are mounted opposite one another, whose frequencies are played IN PHASE with one another (unlike dipole enclosures which play out of phase) Going the floor standing route also freed up having to make a stand, or stands. So in the end, we chose a combination of sealed and ported chambers for optimum sound quality. Porting to the front also allowed us to locate the speaker against a wall. Additional bracing and acoustic foam was added to prevent the ports from having unwanted high frequency resonance, like that annoying echo we all dislike. The double baffle also helped with this. And with our 4 chamber setup, each partition doubled as braces - making the box extremely inert, and fully dampened. Each is driver crossed over on a Behringer DCX2496 active crossover, and the xover points change according to how I feel that day :D The listening room is well, less than perfect - but still a good space for playing demo trailers, movies and music. However, during testing, distinguished standing waves were noticed in 3 places throughout the area. These types of issues, comb filtering especially, are the greatest and most difficult problems small rooms encounter. Thus, it's very smart to have plans built around the specific geometry of a room. That's the only way to build a high end home audio cabinet, after all, rooms affect sound even more than speakers do! Stay tuned this week as we learn how to build custom DIY speaker grills with neodymium magnets! The grill will help keep her clean :D

    You've made parts-express very proud. I love P.E.. You did an outstanding job on your towers. You should make a wish list for tools for your builds and set something up for your fans to send you tools/supplies. I'd help you out. My wife would hate it, but you're too cool and an inspiration to all of us that watch your videos.

    Building your own speakers is a blast. I threw together my speakers 35 years ago. They each contain one 12 inch woofer, two midrange speakers, and four tweeters. That probably sounds crazy, but they sure sound good. The only thing I have had to do over the years was replace the rubber rings that surround the woofer cones, since the old ones literally began to turn to dust.
    I find it amazing that they are still up and working after 35 years.
    When I moved to an odd shaped apartment, the bass sucked. What was happening was that the sound from one woofer was bouncing off the walls and then phase opposing the sound coming from the second woofer. So I reversed the polarity of one woofer, and bingo, sounds great again. I have polarity phase select switches for all speakers. This was something that I was toying with back when I threw the speakers together.

    those are very nice !!!!! I currently have several smaller cabinets but have been kicking around the idea of a pair of massive towers like that I DJ as a side hobby and everyone tells me I need to break it down to just two speakers instead of what I'm running now soooooo I must just do that I'm thinking about two piece stackable cabinets bottom half about 4ft tall with 4 10in subs and the top about 6ft tall with an array of drivers ranging from mid bass all the way to high end tweeters each section with its own amp or amps depending on how I set them up

  • @meshuggahlad7
    @meshuggahlad7 8 років тому

    good job. I have a few pointers. when you cut the holes, leave an inch or more from the edge. the weight from the magnet has more support, regardless of bolting it down. Also, a really dense wood with seamless construction will give less bleed and force all the audio out in the desired field you're trying to cover. a tall box such as yours should have a horn tweeter, doesn't matter what kind, at the top of the cabinet. mid range in between the theater and sub, aligned for directivity.

    Well done. Soon I will be building my own set of towers. Right now I'm running Polk Audio Rti 9's and Abstract Acoustics ASX-PRO800 (older but sound great) for my surrounds. I already built a center from hell. It has 2 fostex tweets, 12 polk mids, and 6 8" subwoofers. The subs are powered with their own amps. It's freakin' awesome.

    first of all they turned out really good you did a great job but just wandering and short of going through all the comments to see if its been asked already i noticed there were 5 sets of spring clip terminals and 1 set of binding posts how is it configured that those each have a channel of an amplifier to go to

    These are great! I'd like to do that one day! But the only thing that I would do instead is to use a Neutrik 8 Pole Female connector and Male, it's so much convenient and it would look much cleaner.

    Nice! If I had to nitpick it sounds like the midrange is a little overwhelming, but it sounds good.

      +Travis Piper It's the camera microphone. Can't expect to hear the real sound through a cheap on board mic.

      Yeah, that seemed a bit of an odd choice.

    • @JoeJ-8282
      @JoeJ-8282 8 років тому +1

      +Mat cool Yeah, I would've used the nicer looking and much sturdier gold-plated binding post type myself, but maybe those spring type were all he had... Besides, the terminals would be an easy upgrade at anytime later because those are not an internal part of the box.

      I would have used speakon for the "sub"woofers and a PA amp e.g. a Peavey IPR1600. I run 2 kappalite 3012lf on one and I could run more than 4.

    • @JoeJ-8282
      @JoeJ-8282 7 років тому +3

      +Tim Lewis; Yeah, Speakon connectors would maybe be best overall... But that's IF he has a professional power amp with Speakon connector outputs... But not every do-it-yourselfer, (me included), has or can afford to buy one of those types of amps!... Who knows, maybe all he has is a typical home theater receiver?... We both know that that's definitely not the greatest choice to power these speakers with, but in the do-it-yourself world, (especially if you are somewhat limited in funds at the moment), you sometimes have to make do, (at least temporarily), with whatever you have on hand, just so you can finish your project and see how it turns out... In this case, to be able to play music through it!... Everyone in this comment thread is bitching about his initial choice of speaker terms., but the bottom line is that he got it working with what he had, and just how many of us here have actually built a set of speakers like this ourselves?... I've only built a smaller pair of speakers myself so far, and I know how even that was a considerable amount of hard and painstaking work to get right!... So, even though this guy has some room for improvement in his design, (*every* speaker out there has that!), at least he's actually doing something like this level of awesomeness with his time, instead of just sitting on his ass writing comments on a UA-cam video, like the rest of us! LOL!!

    I really like that stone finish. Now I am not sure if I want that on my new box or bed liner.

      +Timothy Hinton is I'd go with bedliner for automotive uses, and this for indoor.
