  • Dr. Tod Cooperman of ConsumerLab gives key tips on finding the best green tea products and how to use them safely based on results of CL tests in its Green Tea Review at tinyurl.com/y9e3dyjg. The health benefits and risks are explained, and the important differences in terms of beneficial compounds, like EGCG, and contaminants, like lead. More details are in CL's Green Tea Review, with tests and comparisons of green tea from tea bags, matcha, pills, and drinks.
    The clincal uses of green tea for cholesterol-lowering and reduced risk of disease including cardiovascular, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, as well as risks to the liver, bone, pregnancy, and drug interactions are discussed.
    More information is found in the Green Tea Review, which includes test results for the popular brands Bigelow, Kirkland (Costco), Celestial Seasonings, Davidson's Organics, DNA, GNC, Green Foods, Harney & Sons, HerbaSway, Honest Tea, Ito En Oi Ocha, Jade Leaf, Kiss Me Organics, Kroger, Life Extension, Lipton, NOW, Numi, Organic Kenko, Pure Leaf, Salada, Solgar, Spring Valley [Walmart], Superfoods by MRM, Swanson, Trader Joe's, Twinings, Vitacost, Whole Foods, and Zhou.

    Thank you for making research on the subject. I was personally looking for the testing of lead in matcha powders, as with many powders in spices like origano , test with heavy metals. Often these products are praised with high health value, but a darker side seems to be passing under the radar of many who consume these products almost daily ..

      Just like with eating fruit and vegetables and being vegetarian you have more pesticide in your body than people with meat in the diets ,does this mean you should not eat them? No ,the benefits outweight any potential risks,same here ,the goodness you get from having green tea much more outweight potential cones.

    Finally, it's best to take green tea extract with food. Both exceeding the recommended dose and taking it on an empty stomach may cause serious liver damage ( 30 , 54 ). Green tea extract can be consumed in capsule, liquid, or powder form. The recommended dose is 250-500 mg, taken with food.

    ConsumerLab.com I'm confused by the article on your website re microwaving. Steep for 30 seconds after boiling, then 60 seconds with the teabag in the microwave? Is that the total amount of time to steep, or is it supposed to continue to steep after removed from the microwave?

    • @ConsumerlabPlus
      @ConsumerlabPlus  5 років тому +1

      Hi Zach - As noted in our article, to release the maximum amount of catechins from green tea, first steep the bag in recently boiled water for 30 seconds and then microwave the water (with the teabag still in it) for 60 seconds. For more details see www.consumerlab.com/reviews/Green_Tea_Review_Matcha_Supplements_and_Bottled/Green_Tea/#howtotake

      @@main2333 I don't know but it destroys the taste. Which to me is the number one reason for drinking tea. Green tea should be brewed at 80 degrees C or less. At boiling temperature the leaves open up to quickly and release all the flavor. Which maybe healthy but the taste is bitter. Of course I'm not talking about bags now but real tea leaves. Bags always taste bad so that makes no difference.

Uji Matcha is very good as a breakfast tea, then sencha after lunch, and bancha later in the afternoon as it has less caffeine. Japanese people have the longest life expectancy for a reason...

You can read about these cases in the Concerns and Cautions section of our Green Tea Review at www.consumerlab.com/answers/should-i-worry-about-getting-too-much-fluoride-from-drinking-tea/fluoride-in-tea/. Consider switching to water.

      About half of the coal burned in the world is burned in China, and Chinese coal is about 1,000 times higher in lead than American coal. Why does this matter in a discussion about green tea? Because most of the green tea sold worldwide comes from China and research strongly suggests that in terms of lead, it’s where it’s grown that is most important.

    I saw one report that listed Itoen as having very little EGCG. I’ve been drinking that brand for years and I really hope that report isn’t accurate. Itoen is very popular in Japan.

      Ito En is among the bottled green teas that we tested. The results for it and other products are in our report at www.consumerlab.com/reviews/Green_Tea_Review_Matcha_Supplements_and_Bottled/Green_Tea/. The amount of EGCG per suggested serving (8 fl oz) was, as you note, relatively low.

      Ito En also makes matcha tea that has not been processed like the bottled version. Making your own fresh green tea has the health benefits whereas the more processed products have little to none. I use several brands of matcha green tea that is just the tea powder, NO SUGAR OR OTHER INGREDIENTS ADDED, and drink 1 to 3 cups per day. It has helped me avoid colds and flu viruses and I feel more alert (not jittery like with coffee). Hope this helps. :) Here is a link to the Ito En matcha tea: www.amazon.com/Matcha-Love-Ceremonial-Canister-Antioxidant/dp/B01ESBOJ7G/ref=sr_1_7_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1540312327&sr=1-7&keywords=matcha%2Blove%2Btea%2Bpowder&th=1
      It's also available in an organic version but costs a bit more.

      I have been buying brewed/bags lately. It's cheaper and looks like it's much better. Has more EGCG and Catechins. I was surprised to see how well Lipton rated.

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural 5 років тому

      Matcha tea powder has 10 times the EGCG and catechins of tea that is brewed from teabags, because you are consuming the entire leaf rather than just discarding the tea leaves after steeping. There are many brands now that have a matcha blend with whole leaves in tea bags or sachets that are cheaper than buying the tea powder. I would think that they offer a bit more health benefits than the regular tea bags. :)

    • @danyeo
      @danyeo 5 років тому

      @@helpfulnatural From what I've seen from tests from Consumber Labs and a few others Matcha does have the highest amounts of EGCG and Catechins but not nearly the amount you said. Consumer Labs had their highest tested Matcha powder at 91.8mg of EGCG and 248.9mg of Catechins. While the highest brewed from a bag was at 79mg/150mg. Bottled was much.

    • @ConsumerlabPlus
      @ConsumerlabPlus  Рік тому

      Our tests included many organic green teas. Results varied widely among them -- some were very good and some were not. So "organic" alone, is not an indication of high-quality green tea. The report is at www.consumerlab.com/reviews/green-tea-review-tea-bags-matcha-supplements/green-tea/?search=Bigelow%20Green%20Tea -- the full report is available to CL members.

    Interesting how fluoride makes your bone n teeth brittle and its in most tooth paste and the water supply.

    • @ConsumerlabPlus
      @ConsumerlabPlus  5 років тому +15

      The reason it is in water and toothpaste is that you need a small amount to strengthen bones and teeth. Getting way too much, however, make bones and teeth brittle. So, if you substitute green tea for water all day long, you'll get too much since green tea contains flouride.

    • @splashesin8

      ...and it turns out that fluoride has also been added to our water (which I have been aware of) but I didn't realize this was another factor in regards to green tea.

      Funny there are different kinds of Lipton green tea out there that one really gets confused. Some are packaged locally and are quite affordable while some are imported and pretty pricey...
      In my love for green tea, price doesn't move me to it, the feel of any I taste can get me to stick.

    Fukushima. Are you testing for radiation contamination? I've lived in Japan for years. It's the elephant in the room no one wants to talk about, but it is a real concern. Japan is still incinerating radioactive contaminated rubble, which goes into the world's air current. I love green tea and drank a lot before Fukushima. Now I'm more cautious. Look into it.

    • @ConsumerlabPlus
      @ConsumerlabPlus  2 роки тому

      Benefits are associated with drinking 2 to 4 cups per day. You may not want to exceed that, as too much green tea can give you too much fluoride. Substitute the rest with water.

      100 % ,not to mention he's trying to scare people and sign up so they can read the report and hopefully there they find that best product. You see this practice with soo many different things.
      The true is ,if you instead spend the money to buy quality tea,you'll be fine,any miniscule amount of something remotely concerning would be outweight by the benefits of this beverage,think is,green tea is grown in the condition(heat, humidity,sun..) that unless you buy spring harvest tea leaves, later in the season they haven't use pesticides, even the most high quality producers.However I doubt that the ammout that en up in final product is worth worrying about,it is probably worst for you to eat farmed seafood.
