- My homemade portable cooler livewell. Simple inexpensive way to have a livewell for your jon boat or as a reserve for your bass boat.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video, I'm in the same " boat " as you , need one for a tournament I've entered with my son, thanks again
An easy way to aerate the water is to use a small piece of 1/4" tubing. put one end near the pump propeller and the other outside the cooler/livewell. What happens is when the pump runs, it siphons air from the other end, therefore oxygenating the livewell at the same time it circulates the water.
or just put holes in the top of it so the gas's can excape
Thank you so much .. I thought about it .. and I searched the web to see results .. you are awesome dude.
Sweet! I see a trip to the hardware store and a DIY project coming soon.
Absolutely, I always have 2 batteries on board just in case but if you use a decent battery you will have no problem hooking them up at the same time for a day of fshing.
72q cooler, 4qts=1 gallon, 72q=18 gallons. I have a pump like this that aerates 25 gallons. I have never had any luck with keeping fish with this setup with the lid all the way closed. You have to have surface of water exposed to oxygen so that when surface is broken, oxygen penetrates with the water disturbance. Closing the lid does not allow sufficient oxygen to the fish. Especially one loaded with bass. You need this combo with power bubbles. No deaths yet with adding this and you can keep the lid closed. You will have to notch out spot to run air lines but no big deal.
Travis Moseley I ended up doing just something like that. Worked great.
Could you just use the power bubbles or do you really need the water pump too? Trying to keep pinfish alive for 1 to 2 days for bait. Will the water pump heat water?
If you are talking about the small size battery operated aerators then I don't think they would work as well but certainly would add some aeration and are better than nothing. I do know a few guys who have had success using them for shorter periods of time on days that aren't too hot.
Cool very very helpful been wanting to build one for my boat great clip keep up the great work
When I started looking at d.i.y. live wells I thought this generic design was great. But I soon realized that when you dump bait fish like pilchards in, you have to overload the live well to remove the initial toxins. Having fresh water going through the live well is much better. You are just circulating junky water. Also moving water through from a source outside the boat regulates water temp. If you want cooler water put a frozen bottle of water in. I’m working on a thru hill design for my canoe.
@BassMasters1416 The livewell itself is very light, of course adding water always adds weight but not so much that you can't move it around or pick it up. You can always size the cooler to match your boat or species of fish you plan to put in it. Thanks
What you can do is create an H20 permeable barrier out of chicken wire or anything at one end of the esky. Then freeze milk jugs full of water and put the big blocks of ice in the separated area, this will keep your water cool, combined with an aerator your golden. Should keep your fish alive for a couple days or so!
I think that most of the cheaper aerators "bubble makers" like the one shown in this vid oxygenate up to 4 or 5 gallons, so you would just need to use as many aerators as you have gallons of water in your tank/cooler.
@bassdominator1 Cool, hope it works out well for you. Thanks for watching.
@KillAsrt13 In most of the local club tourny's they have a 3 fish limit. 5 fish may fit, haven't had tried it yet.
That's class, I'm definitely gonna copy yours, thanks for the vid
Hey great video! Would something like this be ok for saltwater and minnows and other bait. I live in hot climate and have a tough time keeping stuff alive. Would this be alright to use to keep my surplus bait alive in it. Sometimes im able to catch alot of bait others not so much and i hate spending money at the baitshop. So id like to keep this under my beach house. Thanks
Sounds great.
Go for it, its simple and cheap.
I experimented using it closer to water surface and further away. I don't think it makes much difference. The goal is to disturb the water surface creating the bubbles which adds oxygen to the water. The more oxygen the better.
Would it work with a 12v battery, and is so. What would be the battery life.
how long do you think this can keep some saltwater bait alive...like goatfish, menpachi, mackerel, and butterfly fish?
How well did it keep your bass alive?
even has cup holders...
Mikey Runzi ummmmm, beer holders duh 🍻
Alright thanks
I'm thinking about making one of those will it be good for live shrimp and smaller fish?
yes, as long as you keep the water cold it will work great. I fill up Gatorade bottles with water and freeze them to keep water cold to keep bait alive
Replace the water every hour or couple depending on how long your out....
Thanks you for post. Is recirculator required if you use bubbler?
Yuri Andropov It definitely helps, especially if the water is really warm. That said you may be able to get by with the bubbler for short periods of time. Thanks
would a frabill aerator work just as good?
Can you use that for saltwater?
12v battery would be fine, you shouldn't have any concerns with battery life as it doesn't draw that much power.
Do you have to run it all the time does it drain your battery?
I only ran it when I had fish in it. You could get by with cycling it on and off. I never thought it used much battery power. A second battery is always an option.
How long does it last on that battery when its running?
that pretty cool
So would 1 or 2 of the smaller "bubble makers" work?
KevinBrauer yes.
How long does that battery last
do you think 3dozen of shrimp could last a week
do you know what the weight is on the whole set up with water? i bought a 12' flatbottom jon boat and i want to put in a live well
Sorry I don't know the weight. The cooler and pump themselves hardly weigh anything. The water is where the weight comes in. You could downsize the cooler some and still be ok in a 12ft jon I would believe.
Water weighs 8 lbs a gallon. 15gal=120lbs+cooler and pump weight
niceee..but in most torneys dont u have a five fish limit
What's that aerator called??
These submersible pumps are terrible. They heat the water to fast which means less oxygen in the water which means lazy dead bait. Just use air stones in a setup like this where you can't control the water temp.
they are pumping water from outside so there is no heat
Ive fit 5 fish in a 15 gallon tank!
@shawndabo o ok
where can i buy the aerator at?
tao manivong Amazon, Walmart...
Buy an aerator tank and a cooler and thee you go
Ive never seen the point of a live well. I have always took an ice chest full of ice and put the fish in that.
Transporting fish
No point of a live well.. lol
Edwin Lucas what about in a tournament?
Daniel Allen to keep your bait alive lol
I don't use live bait anyway. a bag of shrimp and squid sometimes a little cut bait is all I use
Hey
